    Default Computer and the Man

So i had 8 virus's. Damn. Tons of spyware. I had Microsoft on with me about 5 hours tonite. He said he wanted to get inside my computer and look around/help.
So i gave it up to him. Let him in my computer. I watched as he navigated around. He is from India, a charming man.

BUT, is it cool to let support people in to see everything? He wanted my email to send me pictures, and we are to continue cleaning up my comp. Tomorrow at 3:00pm.

So far i am running fast, but the scan takes so long as i have alot on my computer.

Hope i did the right thing. Oh btw, he called me. I gave up days ago, was buying a new computer.

Just kinda need to know if this is normal, or what.

    Thanks,

    Pamela

It does often take a lot of time, as you well know.
I might grant someone reputable access to my system in a worst case, end of my rope, emergency scenario, however, calling you (for reasons other than technical support), or sending you his picture does not sound very professional and would make him seem much less reputable to me.
    Be careful.

    Absolutely,

and if you would like me to view your hard drive. Just email me... ha ha.

I don't let anyone access my computer. It has 8 years of spreadsheets, emails, proposals, everything. Unfortunately.... no pictures.

but, you may have Social numbers, credit card data, etc. etc.

Todays hard drive is yesterday's private diary and bank account info.

That one's too easy! I'm just gonna let it go.

I'm sure letting a tech support guy in to work a problem is OK.

I didn't realize they provided support for virus removal, though. Or was that premium (meaning that you pay for it, not that it's really good) support?

I assume any financial records, or other sensitive items, are password protected, right?

The answer is MAYBE YES. Once you get access, you can create the user or add administrative rights..

Net use command will do this.
Also, you can add a key stroke logger.
Or a back door. (and I am not talking ... well you know..)

Just buy the book Hacking Exposed and it is a cook book that shows you everything... almost.

I am lucky to have a brother who is a computer genius and can fix with a lot of them can't. My friend was prepared to send her crashed harddrive off someplace and pay $750 to have it fixed and he has it now. I'm sure he can do it if it can be done. I still get nervous when he messes on my computer even though he says he doesn't look at anything I still feel like he might see something by accident. I'd be hesitant to let somebody on the phone I'd never met get into my computer. I wish I could start a business with my brother becuase he is the kind of guy everybody wants to work on their computer but he burnt out on working on computers and says he doesn't want to do it anymore.

Maybe it was a courtesy check-up call. But the sending pics is a whole different story. Man why didn't I ever think of that?

When my friend sent her laptop away to be fixed [took three weeks, she went into serious withdrawal] it came back with a naked pic of HER as the new background.

I'd be a little concerned, yeah.
