Default Sherrif posts anti-gay comments on Gov. Website

Sigh, here's yet another clear cut violation of church and state in US government

Marshall County Sheriff Mac Holcomb posts Anti Gay comments on websiteThe sheriff, reflecting on growing up in the 1940s and 1950s, says on the Web site: "Men were men and women were women and there was no mistaking which was which ... Homosexuality was very queer and a despicable act ... an abomination."

Holcomb told The Birmingham News, which reported on the matter Wednesday, that the Bible condemns homosexuality. He said his political message has been posted in his office since 1995 and he won't disavow it now that it's on the Internet with global reach.

I still dont see what he has said thats a problem??
He was REFLECTING the 40's and 50's in small town alabama.
Im not that old,i wasnt there, but im guessing it was pretty much as he described.
    Wouldnt you??
I dont think homosexuals had the same rights and protections in the 40-50's as they do now,SPECIALLY in the 40-50's front yard of the still "liked"KKK,Alabama.
This guy,who is said to be second to none as a cop, elected, also has these statements...
In his written remarks, the 61-year-old sheriff says the 1940s and 1950s were a safer, more respectful, religious time, and he promises "to devote all my energy to do my part to return our society to the values that we once held dear.
This didnt say anything anti gay that i see.
"While I would agree with you that we have lost many wonderful things from the 1950s," Hunter wrote to the sheriff, "homophobia, racism, and sexism are not part of the wonderful things. They are ugly now, they were ugly then, and surely they would be ugly in the eyes of Jesus Christ, who taught only love and compassion, never hatred."
This is just what the reporter said,he is the one reading between the lines and filling it in where it bennifits his agenda.
I think someone is grasping at straws and would wonder what the reporters paper is?

If this guy doesnt agree with homosexuals because his bible tells him so,should he not be able to run for sherriff, govenor,or yup,you guessed it,President??

This is free speach,i dare someone to make him take it down,I double dog dare um!!!!
    LOL
Talk about the lawsuits flying then!!!lolol
alot of freekin lawyers would get real rich!!

His opinions on the history of where he grew up are his own.Let a good police officer reflect for kripes sake!
    Good artical TL,thanks.

Sorry ^ but you are incorrect

While it maybe his opinion he is sharing-- it is not the right venue for it.

That is a government paid for website--- not the place for him to express his personal bigotry or religous convictions. His freedom of speech rights do not apply to that website because it is paid for by "the people"- if it was his own website , paid for out of his own pocket, his freedom of speech rights would then apply.

In short, the problem is that he is using a government sponcered website to preach hate and/or religous proganda. That violates the seperation of church and state laws.

Oh we agree,i dont think it should be a place to do that either. My point is,i dont see where he said anything that he could be held liable for.

I have only seen this report that you posted,i have not seen the actual website.

He intentionaly chose to use a government website to preach things like :

"Men were men and women were women and there was no mistaking which was which ... Homosexuality was very queer and a despicable act ... an abomination."

While it may be free expression of religous beliefs to some- it is also an intentional violation of church/state not to mention it is also hate speech. All the way around, it was wrong.

As of now he refuses to remove these anti gay comments but I think he will do it on his own but not before he realizes that a court will most likely make him remove it from the website , which is public property.

If you don't think it is hate speech to say that homosexuals are an abomination just replace the word homoseuxals with any other group- for example try blacks or Jews. Now is it hate speech ? Hopefully you see the point .

Here's a website that does this experiment in detail..... - this one shows quotes of gay hate speech with the word black in the place of gay
this one uses jes instead of gay:

and here are the real quotes that only the word gay was changed in the above links :

In Alabama,in the 40-50's it was,he is just reflecting on those times.
I belive back in those times,in that area,if ya took a vote,im sure he is correct.

Its more like a history lesson then a sermon.
