Default hair breakage and falling out?!

hmm i KNOW this is my fault ( yup, again!)

ive been dyeing my hair blonde for a year now, and never got treatments, now my hair is a mess, sure its grown all long, which is great, but its breaking something chronic.

everytime i brush my hair i get maybe 70-100 strands of hair falling out! not full lengths, some are but mainly its breakage an inch or so long.

i never had think hair to begin with, but now i have chemically layered hair, and its so damn fine and whispy now on the ends, and i REALLY dont wanna cut it.

is there ANYTHING to promote healthy hair growth and rebuilding stuff that actually works?? i was thinking of using that balding type products marketed at men, but im not too sure....

yucky brooowwwwnnnn. ew. i cant do brunette, it makes me look too gothic and washed out for some reason, even WITH a tan, it just looks wrong.

i absolutly HAVE to keep dyeing it blonde

ima gonna get some treatments and a ceramic hair straightner ( the really good expensive kind!) instead of blow drying my hair every day. but surely with all this technology these days they have come up with some cool cell reproducing hair thingie to make hair rebuild itself?

lol i think im wishful dreaming actually...sigh....

The most helpful thing I have found to keep my often dyed hair from falling out is washing it much less. Seriously. I rinse it out throughly and condition it every day, but I only wash it twice/three times a week. I also have to brush it well every day (not a hundred strokes, but close!) to spread the oils out. I do keep my hair short-right now above chin length, but it has started growing in much thicker and healthier since I started doing this.

I'd recommend trimming off a few inches (the worst parts) and start being good to your hair! I've heard good thing about that Nioxin (?) shampoo for thinning hair, but you may want to consult your hairdresser before adding more chemicals to your hair.

fuschia, do you wash your hair shampoo AND conditioner less often, and on the days not doing that, you rinse and just use conditioner??

i was told by my lurvely hairdresser to cut down the amount of days washing my hair ( as i do it every day, ciggerette smoke is so horrible) maybe thats why?...

i really dont wanna have to cut it at all, not even 1 inch. heh i stupidly cut it all off a year ago,and it was devestating! i vowed not to trim or cut, till its the length it want it to be. silly, but i hate having to cut my hair

    hey,
a ceramic straightening iron is probally as bad as a blow drier!

maybe get an ionic hairdrier. I have an ionic hair drier from sharper image that helped my hair feel really silky. Use quality hair products like redken bumble and bumble.... and always use a conditioning treatment on your hair

when detangling your hair,(brusing) Use a wide tooth comb to guard against breakage.

Also.. keep up with getting your hair trimmed. (not much) but enough to keep it healthy

Your hair is trying to tell you something. IT is breaking because of the peroxide you are putting into your hair. It will continue to break if you dont ease up on the dying unfortunately.
Are you going to a professional hair stylist?

also remember.. That everyone is afraid of change when it comes to their hair. What doesn't look good to you now will look great to you several years later and in pics.
What i would do is use a non-damaging "wash out hair color" Take a pic of it brown and see if you like it later on.

    good luck!

Your hair wont grow as fast if it is not healthy.. You really should get a trim at least twice a year. I KNOW some stylists say like once every 3 months or something.. but i dont think so. Just make sure you are stern when you get the "trim" done so she doesnt cut off more!

yeah, ok so the girls on SW always seem to be right in the long run, im gonna start taking advice properly now

but i KNOW i dont wanna dye it brown,or cut it.

ionic drier? ill get my hairdresser to look into that one for me.

unfortunatly we dont have wal mart in nz or aus, so no wal mart hair pills for us ill search on the net for them tho,and see about importing some,if they are that good. i remember seeing heaps of threads about them sometime ago,so off searching i shall go .....

    thanks heaps ...xox

Your hair dresser is the one who is damaging your hair?

Hmm, maybe look into a new hairdresser?!! Is she running the color every time more then just on your roots? What kind of dye is she using?

just because you want to have blond hair does not mean it has to be damaged.. Unless you are going from like a black color..

well, what happened....cos we went to japan and blond hair dye is impossible to come by there, she let me buy the same hair dye she was using on my hair to take with me....and for some reason , i still dont know why, i got my bf to dye my hair, roots first and then just brushing it thru to the ends for the last 5 min or so, but we uhh well i kept getting regrowth ( as you do) and dyed my hair every 2 weeks. GULP.

and then i used to blow dry it every night for work, and after work it tie it in a nice tight ponytail and go to bed.

yup, i never said i was smart....lol yet another lesson learnt!!

and i cant get extensions cos my hairs too damaged now but im not so worried cos my hair grew back long anyways yippeee!

well, except for the breaking bit ....damnit.

Cut it all off. That's what I had to do...
Go to the health food store and look for supplements with silica, MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) Horsetail extract, L-Cysteine, and Choline. (I have them combined in one supplement but don't know what's available in NZ.) Eat Jello too.
On the "Wal-Mart Hair Pills" thread, someone posted the ingredients..it's mostly silica.
Hey, isn't it summertime down there? Your hair will grow faster. Good luck!

Edit to add: I know you said you didn't want to cut it, but it'll fall out/ break off as time goes on anyhow...better that it look neat.

Try using leave in conditioners,Alterna makes a good one,and also, use hair reconstructors,I like the biolage' conditioning balm.

Well, first off.......you need to get a haircut. Just cut a couple inches off to start. Buy a Chi hair dryer, and buy a shampoo that does not have sulfate in it, also use real mayo for a weekly hair conditioner. Oh, and buy silk pillowcases.....cotton sheets will break fragile hair right off.

Trust me....I have the same problem you are dealing with...and I have done all the above and my hair is on the road to recovery. If you have any questions you can PM if you would like

Maybe you can wear a wig or hair extensions to protect it,My hair was very damaged from dying it blonde also, but its alot healthier from wearing hair extensions and my hair is alot healthier because I only highlight the crown,The rest is of my head has the blonde from the extensions, but it can be costly,so you might be better off with wearing a wig for a while just until it repairs itself.

I would just recommend a good trim, possibly a drastic trim. It would do your hair good.

I just bought this Sebastion deep conditioner for my hair and it works great. Also, that Alterna stuff works great or Redken recontructor. On and I strongly suggest stop wearing a ponytail to bed. It pulls at your hair at night and will make it fall out faster. Just be gentle to it from now on.

I have blonde hair too- what I do is just color small sections of the regrowth for the look of highlights. Having small sections of hair highlighted is healthier than the whole head because you're only damaging a small portion of the hair and you'll still be blonde. There's a kit called Feria Color Expert or just use a regular blonde haircolor and apply it with a clean mascara wand. That's the applicator in the Feria kit anyway. Don't leave the haircolor on longer than it says either because it will damage it more. Or if there's salons around just get highligts on the roots. Oh and with highlights you don't have to color it as much because you have some darker areas anyway. I color my hair about once every 1 1/2 months.
    Also keep conditioning it.

Fantastic advice! ^^^^ everyone! I will remember those.

Here is a new one i tried the other day: I heated up a light cooking oil, i think sunflower, and added some warm conditioner to it. After washing my hair, i used them warm not hot, on my hair! Fantastic! Not oily, but very very soft and flowy! Felt great. You will have to start off slow with the mixing of the oil for the length of you're hair though.

    Good luck,

Exactly. Most days I just rinse and condition. The other 2/3 days, I wash and condition. It also helps that I wear a wig or fall to work, so it doesn't get nearly as smoky smelling as it could. That might help you for a bit as well, since you can just BUY straight hair, instead of straightening it.

OK: I have hair down to my ass, never had extensions, but my hair breaks off in little peices and lands on the floor which I then sweep up and cringe at the sight of every time I wash my hair.

THIS IS WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO!!!
-I reccomend the Bumble and bumble line for everything below.
-have a B&B set of shampoo and conditioner and deep conditioner treatment.
-have a set of the above that's cheap but good like Pantene.
-wash your hair no more than 3 times a week, plan it out if you have to.
-use B&B set once a week, and Pantene twice a week. Just rotate. Hair likes change.
-in the shower never use really hot water.
-wash only your scalp with shampoo, let the suds rinse through the length.
-use lots of conditioner all over and let sit for as long as you can, I wait for 3 min.
-turn the water to cooler and rinse out conditioner.
-use deep conditioner on the length and let sit for the same amount of time.
-use deep conditioner every time you wash.
-make the water a little cooler and rinse that out.
-squeeze out the water gently, never wring out or twist.
-spritz a detangler (B&B) into hair and brush through very gently with a paddle brush starting from the ends and moving up and up.
-try and let your hair air dry, but an ionic hair dryer is what I use every time, but no brushing.
-spritz a little B&B gloss over the length, not too much.
-if you need to straighten, dont brush, just run it through one section at a time.
-dont brush your hair at all, just at the time you style, don't brush till the next time you've showered.
-never use tight elastics and tie tight ponytails. This causes hair to break and be stretched.
-sleep with hair open or in a loose braid, if you can use a silk pillowcase. It will prevent friction.
and that's it!!! If you do this every time you wash your hair will look great even if it is over proccessed. Mine is!
If you find any other products by bumble and bumble that the stylist reccomends then use it! All their products are good and work well.

    Hi-
I went through the same problem you are going through and will let you know what I did. First off- I tried tons of shampoos, conditioners, and other so called miracle products. Nothing worked, I just spent tons of money for no reason. Everywhere I went though, I asked around as to what others used on their hair. After many months, I finally found Redken's Extreme line. It comes in a dark blue bottle, shampoo, cond, leave-in treatment and my favorite the Deep Fuel packs. Anyway- I have not touched my hair with color for over 6 months and it is finally starting to get healthy. I had to keep cutting it off so much , and my hair is now up to my shoulders. I am European and have very black hair, I was bleaching every four weaks, and my hair broke off terrible and was falling out after a year off bleaching. Stupidly, I then dyed my hair dark, didn't like it, and re-bleached my hair blonde again. What a nightmare. I have been wearing falls (attachements you clip on your hair) and wigs. This has helped tremendously. I know it is a pain, but if you keep bleaching, or even dye your hair you WILL have bald spots. You must not touch it for a period of time and let it get healthy on its own. Products help to somewhat manage the hair, they do not restore it, you must let it grow out on its own.

    WOW thanks a million everyone.

    some great ideas

cianna im gonna try your tips, its all common sence ( heh to everyone but me!!) ive never heard of bumble and bumble here, but im sure its available on the net.

not too keen on the wig/extension thing, cos to wear the pony tail one means i have to tie my hair up,and thats bad for my hair now, also i hate having my hair pulled back at work, it just accuntuates my nose heh.
and the half head ones, look funny on me.

im gonna go on a huge conditioner shop next week yay
