    Default stripper statistics anyone?

So, I am doing research for a book I am writing and having just the darndest time finding facts about us. How many strippers are there in America? How many start per year? How many clubs? What age groups etc.. Does anyone have any leads on where one could procure this trivia? Help out a fellow intellectual naked girl! big love, BJ

TUSCL has a comprehensive list of just about every single club in the States...

Finding out how many dancers are currently dancing and start per year is going to be hard...a lot of dancers start off the books...get paid under the table...or claim their dance money under other occupations...so, good luck there.

"Stripper Statistics" -We're tougher, smarter and more sly than many men put together? Heh heh.
I would recommend you use averaging formulas (clubs per city times avg. no# girls per week, etc.)/ business license registries to start with. It will be hard but not impossible to come up with some numbers.

I've struggled with this one myself. I think you're better off estimating, because dancers come and go so much, travel to work part time, have additional jobs, etc. I'd just give a range, like "100,000 based on this formula of estimating, to 500,000 based on this other formula of estimating." I wouldn't trust anybody who said they had an exact number, anyway.

You'd be surprised what stats you can get from the US government. Odds are that they
have someone who's entire job is to study this issue. If they can find the time to worry
about the size of the holes in swiss cheese or how to define a pickle...
Anyway, try the Department of Labor or Commerce Dept. (Census Bureau is part of that).
First step is to figure out the SOC code (Standard Occupational Classification) as defined by
the BLS (Bureau of Labor Statistics)... could it be 27-2031 (Dancers) or 27-2090
(Miscellaneous entertainers and performers) or perhaps 39-9090 (Miscellaneous Personal
Care and Service Workers) ? These classifications are pretty clumsy... in the real
world elevator operators, coat check persons, ushers, bell hops, airship pilots, switch board
operators, bootblacks, gas lamp lighters, slot key holders, and buggy drivers are vastly
outnumbered by strippers, but do we get a seperate SOC ? LOL

Personally, I'd like to see stats on the number of male vs. female dancers.

BTW, I just remembered that Canada has NOC codes (National Occupational Codes)...
are we under "circus performers, magicians, models, puppeteers and other performers not elsewhere classified." (They are employed by circuses, nightclubs, theatre, advertising and other production companies or may be self-employed.) If so, it's NOC 5232... But I guess not.
Note that "Buskers entertain passers-by on sidewalks and in parks with magic tricks, juggling acts, short dramatic works, music and other entertaining displays." No, not us.
How about 5134 (Dancers): "Dancers are employed by ballet and dance companies, television and film productions and night clubs and similar establishments." So our duty is to: "Perform dances as soloists or as members of groups before live audiences, etc." Anyway, if there is
a classification for it, chances are there are statistics for it too.

Finding the exact number or even a ballpark estimate is going to be next to impossible, due to the highly nomadic nature of the profession and lack of accurate records. Girls fly in and out of this business faster than any statistician could possibly keep track. You could go to TUSCL or use the Exotic Dancer directory and try to estimate based on the number of gals per shift, but that would take forever, not to mention that a lot of the information from those sources is either missing, inaccurate, and even when its correct, there are too many varibles in play to even get an idea.

I do remember Playboy running a stripper pictorial some years back (mid 90's), and in a accompaning article, they estimated the dancer population in the U.S. to be around 10,000. How they came up with that, I don't know, but even if it were accurate then, I'd say that it has gone up significantly since.
