Pure, the point is that it is assumed when you're black that you listen to rap music. It's like telling the white men that you speak of that they should be listening to classical...

Understood Minah... my comment was more in response to West TX saying that "sisters" don't have the common sense to play music that caters to white men. Usually that type of music is rap.

After several long year of dancing full-time and part-time, I am working at club where for once I am not the only black girl or one of few. I get along with pretty much everyone in the club and make pretty good money but the black girls who came from clubs with more black customers sometimes struggle. They value the advice I give them because they know I'm not concerned with competing with them (I'll make my money anyway) so here is my two cents:

    1. Learn to be versatile
    2. Realize that there are men from all kinds of ethnic backgrounds in the club and get to about them, you'll seem alot more cultured.
    3. Know about what is going on in the world and be prepared to have a conversation about just about anything.
    4. Don't bring drama and hate on the floor (this what is expected of a black woman); instantly you are seen as having a bad attitude and it is not as easily forgiven as if you are white.
    5. Demand what I call 'cultural respect' from customers of another ethnicity. Let them know that pretending to know ebonics and rapping along with 50cent is not necessary to impress you. You are being yourself and so should they.
    6. Do things to bring attention to yourself. Mix up your music a little. I constantly leave my music to the mercy of the DJ and almost every stage set yields someone who likes me and my song (even I don't know what the hell I just danced to)
    7. Wear clothes that are flattering to your body. Remember you are competing against barbiedoll looking chicks who look good 'just because'.
    8. Last but not least, SMILE, SMILE, SMILE. Black women are always assumed to be angry and mad all the time. Crush that myth and be happy go lucky just like that blonde making money next to you.

Well as far as I go its all about how I'm treated .
the pics below are of black dancers I find attractive .
now this might not be you , but many black dancers tend to come at me like I'm a walking ATM machine .
or they ignore me if I want to talk to you before spending my money , then give me looks when some latina , asian or ucranian leaves with a few hundred from my table AFTER she took the time to talk to me and give me hella good dance .
but one of my fav's that used to dance at hardbodies in arlington was a sista , but she left and went to showtime then i lost track. she was a super hot yella bone .

Nikki THIS is sooo true... I also read that if you have dark skin it helps to wear briter colors like white or anything neon....

I also liked what you said about them being themselves... I love everything from Acoustic Alchemy to 50 Cent. But guys dont have to pretend to know ebonics for me to like them.

    So good advice!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Yes Polo Girl,

You see I am dark-skinned so I wear tons of White, Hot pink and outfits that glow in the black lights. Can't believe I forgot that one, but most people know that trick.

I work in a mostly white club in nyc, and i have no problem making good money. I think how you speak and carry yourself makes a huge difference, also I think it matters a lot less if you're black or white, and more of if you're hot or not...I've had a lot of customers tell me that they usually don't go for black girls, but that they like me cause I'm pretty. I think a lot of white guys like the whole "exotic thing"...also I'm from the carribean, and guys seem to like that a lot for some reason. I've never had problems making money in other clubs or even other states, I think as long as you're good looking, well spoken and have a nice body noone should give you any problems. Also, I'm not light skinned, I don't wear contacts and I don't have a light weave. My hairs in braids and I keep my look pretty natural. People say I look exotic but not mixed, I dunno....I'm attaching pics. Be warned, this is a pic of me in the house with no makeup....not strippermode lol.

Forgot to mention, being "exotic" isn't enough. Doing something to make yourself stand out always helps. For instance I'm always one of the only girls to dance to metal...and I make it a point to be one of the best dancers. It's a money maker when guys see a black chick dancing her ass of to Metallica's For Whom The Bell Tolls

Well I live in Minnesota and here it is a little conservative I was born here and I am a black girl( I have to tan a little to be these beautiful shade of brown but well worth it) I will tell you like this, somehow you have got to work this program don't let the program work you. There are some black dancers native to Moneysota that know we can get paid (That is where the Moneysota comes into to play) The only black girls here that don't make money, are the ones that weren't born and raised here. We know how to talk customers out of their wallets and all entertainers should know that, women have game, no matter what color you are. Most black girls get an attitude when someone says no, but rejection should make you want to hustle harder. It works for me. And remember, Alot of white men see women as VERY exotic, Implement somewhere in your hustle presentation, a smile and a good attitude, wins them over every single time!

Beautiful black dancers get a lot of attention at clubs in my experience. Less than beautiful ones get a lot less attention in clubs I'm familiar with; of course those are the majority. Seems like a supply-demand thing to me.

Essentially I agree with Tina -
"The caucasian standard of beauty prevails in this country, and if a black girl has a more afrocentric look, dancing will not be kind to her."
I loved going to strip clubs; I actually made some friends there. Now things are different for the clubs and for me. As a result I am not as happy.

Customers are not entitled to grope, disrespect, or rob strippers. This is their job, not their hobby, and they all need income. Clubs are not just some erotic show for guys to view while drinking.

NOTE: anything I post here, outside of a direct quote, is my opinion only, which I am entitled to. Take it for what you estimate it is worth.

What is a more afrocantric look, can somebody please explain that to me. Having a long straight light colores weave dosen't mean more white looking. Black women from all over the world have all different type of looks including long straight hair. We all know certain looks are not appropriate in the club just like the corp. environment has a "dress code". that has nothing to do with being white. Another thing, if you think that white women are the "standard" just because they're white, you've already shot yourself in the foot.

    1. What is afrocentric? :
    http://www.afrocentric.info/AfricanC...finitions.html

    Sinammon,
Ok, you say that, "We all know certain looks are not appropriate in the club just like the corp. environment has a "dress code" What is exactly do you mean by "appropriate" What one may look at as extreme, one could argue that it is creative and fresh. Why are "certain looks" not appropriate in the club..and what looks exactly are these?

Not to get to deep here, but historically, being a white woman was the #1 true standard of what a BEAUTY is. To be blonde haired and blue eyed was the thing to possess. From white brunettes, to black women, to asian women.

*You have black women who are frowned upon for not getting their relaxer every 6 weeks. <sarcasm> Can let them naps get outta control <sarcasm> If you were to walk around with your hair all out, in a natural afro, how many people (white or black etc) would actually stop and compliment you?
*You have women of colour who wish so bad to "pass" in this society. The lighter you are, the easier it is for you. There have even been studies to say that the lighter skinned you are, the more trustworthy you are...WHITE=purity while BLACK=evil/darkness.
*You have asian women who are getting injections into their eyes to make them appear less exotic and more in the lines of the standard "white american beauty" You have them getting implants into their faces to make their high-cheekbones none-existant, and making their faces more fuller and round.

We live in a society everyday that tells you that long flowing hair is BEAUTIFUL and stylish. That perfect straight nose, and small pouty mouth are beautiful, whereas that full mouth and thick lips are not beautiful. That natural coil in our hair is "nappy" and "unmanageable". Why do you think relaxers and the hot comb where invented anyway? Society has created this image of what beauty is...you have to look deep within yourself to figure out if this is the image that you want to portray, or if you want to break the mold.

Maybe "appropriate" wasn't the best word because it didnt explain what I'm talking about. In the club, you have to find a hairstyle thats stylish but also appeals to customers.Thats what I mean by appropriate. A types of looks, including an well groomed afro, super short haircuts ect. can work if it fits you. But if it locks, braids whatever thats not working for you then you need to change it. The problem comes when some but not all black dancers feel they have to look more "white" in order to make money.

As far as this whole "white standard of beauty thing" I think black folks have blown it way out of porportion, blacks and other people of color gave it power. The blame has been put on white people for a lot of blacks not feeling good about ourselves when it is really our own fault for not prasing our own people, not prasing your own beautiful looks. Society knows were beautiful women wether they admit or not, that "standard" was label used to intimidate the weak. Too much attention is focused on what white people think about us and it is really uneccessary. That is where all this junk came from.
And Cinnamon, I hope you ain't buying into all this bullshit because you are a very beautiful woman, there is no reason for you to try to break the mold cause you got the goods already, anybody who says otherwise is probably jealous.

Ha, no not at all darlin'. Actually I'm soooooooo far from that! I am actually trained to talk to people (majority middle school on up) about the effects of eating disorders and body image. I speak from what from I have experienced, and from how I was trained. Anyway, thank you for the compliment. That was a very nice thing to say.

YOU ARE IN LA AND THEY ARE ACTING LIKE THAT (smacks myself)

Ok...that is more like the way they act on the east coast. Wait a minute..I thought LA was...california was..the land of the 'beautiful' people where they accepted everyone. Do you have to look like a god damned barbie doll to get money there, too?

    (nothing against barbie doll chics...)

Girl, we just haven't bridged the gap from "taboo" and or ignorant to "exotic" yet like Asians and Latinas. You know the type of racism we experience is unique to our race. It's just something we have to deal with until the whole "ghetto chick" BS gets old. But that won't be anytime soon. Until then I would say stay at a club near the city. People are almost always more approving of diversity.
