Sad Tsunami - As Real As It Gets

My boyfriend's sister is a missionary of 15 years there, and this is what she shared with us.....

These were the types of pictures on the picture boards—from which people were supposed to identify bodies. As you can see, it was gruesome and the bodies were totally unrecognizable. I found myself wondering, “Who would ever identify ME??”

The utter destruction is really hard to believe. Seeing it in pictures and seeing it on TV does not at all feel the same as seeing it in person.

Bodies of “wrapped” corpses at one of the temples where we worked with grieving family members.

Wow, that's truely sad. That picture on the left sort of reminds me of the 911 pics that were plastered all over NYC.

I wonder too how these ppl can be identified in time.

Thank you for sharing that, Vaden. I'm still very saddened that so many lives were lost, young and old alike.

I went onto one of the hospital sites shortly after the Tsunami (I think it was Phi Phi hospital), and they had pictures up of victims that were still alive, and victims who were deceased and yet to be identified or claimed. They also had a message board. A father was searching for his infant daughter. Unfortunately, she was one of the victims pictured as deceased. I think the baby girl was 3 months old.

For the first time in a very long time, I sat here and cried. I just cannot imagine what everyone who went through this, actually went through, and is still going through.

I read an AP story about "Baby 81" in Sri Lanka- he is an infant who was the 81st admission to the hospital on the day of the tsunami- a stranger brought him. Several women are fighting over him and claiming him as theirs, since they all lost infants in the disaster. A hospital staffer commented that they did not feel many of the women were being consciously dishonest, because in that situation, "every child looks like yours"....
While words fail to explain or comfort, it is touching to see the outpouring of support and help from the rest of the world.

Unfortunately, due to the large numbers of dead, many/most of them won't be. Due to the ever increasing risk of infection, many of the dead are now being buried in mass graves.

The mind just can't comprehend the scale of the tragedy there. I can just get my mind around the human impact of maybe 17 people dying all at once. Multiply that by 10,000...just not possible.

Well said..this tsunami has left me feeling very overwhelmed. I made a donation through UNICEF but, I wish there was more I could do personally to help.
