Default what to do what to do

the lovely wife called me at work last night around 7 to inform me that Noodle, our youngest cat, had been killed by a car in front of the house. he was my daughter's 6th birthday present last june, and freakishly snuggly and nice. now i know he shouldnt have been outside...but i suggest anyone have 3 cats and 4 kids and try keeping them inside all the time. it just aint happening. so yeah my daughter cried herself to sleep last night and is all sorts of bummed out. and so am i. the problem is this: he's in a box on the front porch right now and i am unsure what to do. it's cold outside and the area we live in is extremely rocky. i just spent 20 minutes in the backyard attempting to dig a hole in several locations, and to no avail. it IS technically cold enough i could wrap the box in a few trash bags and just throw him in the outside bins...BUT. trash pickup isnt until thursday morning and well that is just kinda nasty.(not to mention the girlchild will probably find it grossly insensitive.) i was also pondering some sort of cool viking style funeral pyre, but that probably requires permits of some sort. any suggestions would be welcomed. my next oldest cat, who was his cuddling/cleaning partner has been walking around the house meowing and searching for him all morning.

Well here, the local SPCA does cremations.

    Two options:

    1. They dispose of the body with others they are eliminating. (cheaper, but seems pretty heartless)

    2. They cremate your pet alone and provide the ashes to you in a box. This option would allow for a more convienient funeral in the spring. (probably the better option, especially given children in the equation)

Then, during the third reconciliation of the last of the McKetrick supplicants, they chose a new form for him: that of a giant Slor! Many Shuvs and Zuuls knew what it was to be roasted in the depths of the Slor that day, I can tell you!"

So sorry for your kids loss.

Do you have a garden tiller? I have one part of the property that has been set aside for pet burials, everyone in the family brings their pets to be buried there. However sometimes the ground wont cooperate, so I use my garden tiller to break the ground up, shovel it out, then till some more.

Silverback also had some good suggestions, I have used the SPCAs cremation services before and they are very sympathetic, it cost me around $75 but for your kids piece of mind and the option for closure once you can bury it, I would say its worth it.

I am so very sorry to hear about the kitty, MrC.

Silverback's suggestion was excellent. The ASPCA is always there to help, especially in situations like this.

My Sister ran her own cat over about 2 years ago, not realizing that he was asleep underneath her car as she backed out of her driveway. She was extremely distraught, and called me in tears. I ended up driving to her house in the pouring rain, and I had the job of picking "Gus" up off the road. I cradled him in my arms while she dug a spot in her garden for him. She figured that was the perfect place for him, as she is always tending her garden, and would never be too far away from the site.

I'm not sure if burial is an option for you, but if you can, it probably would be a good idea, so that your daughter can visit it whenever she'd like.

Again, my sympathies go out to you and your family. The loss of a pet is horrible. Good luck in your decision.

I send out my deepest sympathies to you and your family MrChristopher. My avatar is one of the four furbabies that my entire life revolves aroud and I can honestly say that if anything happened to any of them, I would be destroyed. Growing up we had a pet cemetary behind the garage for the various hamsters and goldfish the went through my life and even had a friend bury a beloved pet rat there after her mom downsized and moved to an apartment. I personally will cremate my animals when that inevitable day comes. I think having your daughter know what happened and that she can still visit and talk to him if she chooses is better that the line some parents use of the pet "running away." imo

i'm sorry about the news! when my tarantula died, i put her in a glass case on display. i was going to taxidermy my ferret, but she had cancer & had lost a lot of her fur. i simply put her in a beautiful coffin i had made out of wood (i did keep her skull). i wouldnt throw the animal in the trash, i could never do that to my pets! i had an ex who's mother threw the dead guinea pig in the trash. i was horrified! if my mother had tried to throw out pretzels (my tarantula) i woulda killed her!

one thing i would consider is taking the cats bones & having them assembled together & put in a glass case. that way they'll always be with you. most people think i'm weird when it comes to this stuff though.

Wouldn't be a good idea to throw the cat away, so I would suggest calling the aspca as others suggested, or have someone help you bury him. I am sorry you lost a little family member.

thanks for the input folks. i took him to the SPCA today for a "private cremation". it was 50 bucks, and i'll get his ashes sometime in the next week or so...they weren't really specific. my daughter wants to get a nice ceramic cat or something similar that is hollow and put him in there. so, all is well. the woman at the shelter was really trying to sell me on these teeny 8 week old black kittens....but ive never been big on the "replacement plan". perhaps later, who knows.

Sorry to hear about your loss, MrC. Pets are really just as much a part of the family as the people - and their loyalties to us never waver.

The ceramic cat for the ashes sounds like a good idea for a tribute.
