    Earrings on guys

Do you like them? And if so, what style?

I'm currently getting used to the way I look wearing one with short hair. I used to wear a sleeper, but that was when I had hair down to the middle of my back. These days it's pretty short and spiked up (funnily enough, the corporate-style environment tends to frown on really long hair for guys - go figure) and I've just started wearing a stud again after years of going earring-less, but studs are kind of boring. Any ideas, given that anything too large is going to look ridiculous?

Some guys just look wrong with jewelry. CO is one of those guys.

And there's a lot more of those guys out there, but no one is telling them how retarded they look with earrings.

Ok, a little bit of history…

Back in the days when pirates plundered the Spanish Main and swashbuckling was a way of life, many seafaring men wore a single earring, and the custom survives today, mainly among scuba divers and commercial deep divers, as well as modern seafaring men from most cultures around the world.

It had nothing to do with being "cool."

    The reasons were twofold:

Firstly, It was believed that piercing the ears with such precious metals as silver and gold improved one's eyesight. This was the main reason pirates performed such a ritual. It must also be noted that most other seafaring men also indulged in this practice, and, although for years this was considered by some to be an old wives' tale, today western acceptance of the ancient art of acupuncture lends some credence to the practice of ear piercing. The earlobe is an acupuncture point for several eye ailments. It is believed that the practice of ear piercing was brought to the West from the Oriental trade routes.

Secondly, seafaring men, divers especially, have an inherent aversion to becoming fish food. The practice of wearing a single, expensive earring was a sort of life insurance policy. The idea was that if you were washed overboard, or had a diving accident where you lost your life, the earring provided incentive for your dive buddy or your ship mates to retrieve your body rather than leaving you to the fishes. As payment, the earring would go to the man who was responsible for retrieving your body and facilitating a proper funeral, and he would often ritualistically remove it from the corpse and insert it into his own ear as part of the funeral rite. Back in those days, a little bit of gold went a long way, and could often feed an entire family for the good part of a year.

Although modern social and moral practices may render the custom archaic in many ways, nevertheless, the custom still lives proudly on.

I've been a scuba diver for 30 years. I’ve worn a single, antique diamond stud the whole time (Two earrings would be redundant and far too rich a fare for Charon, the ferryman of the river Styx--for that, a simple coin was usually placed under the tongue or over the eyes of the deceased). I don’t wear the earring because I think my buddy will not bring back my body without payment, I wear it because it is an ancient custom and connects me to the history--not because some punk kid might think its cool or un-cool.

It has caused me some grief in the corporate world, especially working for companies like IBM and EDS, but I’ve always refused to remove it. The one compromise I ever made was, one time, at the corporate headquarters of EDS, in Plano, Tx, Ross Perot himself (then the head of the company) asked me to remove it. Instead, I covered it with a Band-Aid for the day that he was there.

I don't like studs on guys. Just rings. And if there's going to be rings, then make it one on each side!!

    Yeah.. None.. Ever..

There's this little 21 year old kid at work who has about 5 in each ear. He also looks like a reject from the Backstreet Boys. Blah..

Be safe and don't wear earrings, guys. It's just not attactive if you're wanting to be manly and stuff.

Maybe it was a local thing, but I remember when the ear you wore your earring in was an indicator of sexual preference. left - hetero, right - homo, both - bi, undecided, or female.

Ain: Meh, I never wore it to look cool. Was bored one day, got it pierced and liked how it looked. (Same thing with the hair, actually. I was mind numbingly bored and decided to get a haircut - and there went 2ft of hair. Yes, I did regret it afterwards but was too lazy to grow it again.) Mind you, I'm not sure I like the look with short hair, which is why I'm trying to decide whether to stick with it or write it off as another bit of lost youth.

Casey: Dude, all I (n)ever wanted to know about earrings!

What if we're trying to be girly?

I was trying to convince myself that I could still pull it off, but then you guys had to go ahead and hit me with a dose of reality. *sulk*

My guy has three in one year.. two studs and a bar (my old eye brow ring, before I took it out) in his cartilage... They are all VERY small and I think they look great, he's young and outgoing so they fit is personality, plus they're all in gold so they never look faded...
I'll post a pic when my picture phone starts to work again (damn sprint is always gumming up the works!)
Please don't lick me, it tickles..

    LOL I sowwy, Kym..

Apparently the kid at work is going for "girly". It's funny though, he wears all different types of earrings in all 10 holes, he wears more gel and hairspray combined in his hair than I did in the 80s, and bathes in cologne. Ugh..

yeah... I use to have two - one ring in each ear.... I actually really liked them, and I didn't really care what others thought.... well, that is until I started interviewing, then I regrettably removed them permanently from my ears. for a guy, earrings and a suit do not match all that well

My b-f does not have pierced ears. I guess I prefer them that way but I don't mind pierced ears. I prefer small rings instead of studs. I also like bars next over studs.

I only know of two guys who wear 1 in the ear. They are not gay, or kids. They are both bald (shave their heads) and they just look hot! These earrings are real diamond studs, very nice.

Bald, older, fit, and a diamond stud works for me on a man. Other than that the only other place i like to see a piercing is on the cock or balls!

And the belly button? What's up with a guy having that pierced? My ex does and it's a ring yet......Is that gay or what?

If I wanted to wear ear-rings or anyplace-rings, I would first look at old National Geographics. You can see it (almost) all there; in porn sites you can see all the other places to wear anything metallic.
I loved going to strip clubs; I actually made some friends there. Now things are different for the clubs and for me. As a result I am not as happy.

Customers are not entitled to grope, disrespect, or rob strippers. This is their job, not their hobby, and they all need income. Clubs are not just some erotic show for guys to view while drinking.

NOTE: anything I post here, outside of a direct quote, is my opinion only, which I am entitled to. Take it for what you estimate it is worth.

    OK, ok.
What I meant was, earrings on both sides for guys was cool in the 90's. Now, the guys that usually have both sides pierced are done with the spacers and tunnels (stretched). This is cool too, if it goes with your personality and style! And I'm not gonna say that men in suits look silly with these kind of piercings...cause I've seen it look pretty hot on a man all dressed up. What I mean to say is - if the jewellry reflects your person, and you are a sexy, well-kept man, than it looks good!!

PS - I'm not a fan of male genital piercings though!! I like to be the one who has it

IMHO, earrings are the same as baseball caps....real men don't wear them. You guys look like you are 14.

Looks like I'm in the minority, but earrings on guys don't bother me. But they're not a turn on either-I'm indifferent about them.

Baseball caps too? Well, I can personally vouch for my hubby. He's a very very real man, and he wears a variety of ball caps. For the most part, they're Sox & Patriots caps. He's definitely a real man who loves his sports. I definitely don't mind the caps, and think they look great on him. That's a whole other thread though, so I'll stop.. LOL
