    Default Ocd

Ah the power of a message board with over 10000 members! Completely eliminating my need to research anything! Libraries? Pshaw!

Okay - don't read too much into this - does anyone here know the diagnostic difference between a bad habit and Impulse Control Disorder?

    Interesting topic, Jenny.

For me, it's difficult to distinguish someone who's just a little obsessive with things (cleaning, etc), from someone who could seriously have a problem with OCD.

I guess I could be seen as having a touch of OCD (by my own admission), because I'm a wicked neat freak. I don't want dust, dirt, or other nasty stuff in my or my childrens' living space. My husband thinks it's hilarious because if there's a crumb, or a little tiny speck of something on the rug, I won't just go and pick it up, I'll vacuum the whole entire floor. I also have a habit of washing my hands ALL the time. That was pretty much started after I had the baby though. I was nursing her, and didn't want germs on her, or me. But, that kind of stuck, and I still wash my hands after everything I do.

My former Sister-In-Law however, was diagnosed as having severe OCD. When we'd go out to restaurants, she would HAVE to sit with her right side facing out, and never, ever in the middle of a booth. She would literally start tweaking out. She also used to do things in numbers of 5. Meaning, she would wash her hands five times, close the door five times, and so on. Have you ever seen the movie with Jack Nicholson, "As Good As It Gets"? That's a prime example of how she is. She takes medication to control it, but medication can only help so much. There is always a trigger that will set a person off.

Here's a link for you to check out. It's got symptoms, etc.. that could help you out.

    Good Luck

I think when people are doing ocd type behavior to cope with emotional issues like depression or grief for example, then it's a problem. I'm no Dr. though so that's just my

I had it. When I walked on tiles or a carpet with patters i HAD to step inside the square, not on a line. If I stepped on the line it felt like the line burned through my foot and i had to wipe it off immediatley. I was also obsessed with even number - everything had to be even. Words in a sentence, fries on a plate, number of stairs to climb, characters in a password, etc. I got over it a bit, but I'll never be the same. I still obsess with walking inside the tiles, but now, when I step on the line, it's not such an emergency to wipe my foot.. It's really hard to explain.

Anyways, OCD comes in many forms of obsessions, not just cleanliness. For me, I knew I had it because it felt like the world would end if there were 7 cigarettes left in my pack - sometimes I smoke 2 at a time just to keep it even.. When you forget about it after a few seconds - it's no big deal, but if you dwell on it longer than that, and it interferes with your life/health/social interactions - you may need help.

I've known a few customers with it, some have told me that they've been diagnosed with it and others you can kind of tell (or atleast guess), they're usually the ones that flip out about not sitting in a certain booth and they nod their heads at certain times through a conversation, like when a certain word is said. They're have only been about a total of five that I've met... All awesome guys with little quirks that just make them more interesting, (they were all great converstationalists and good spenders.)

I have some OCD tendancies but I have more BDD(body dysmorphic disorder) tendancies which is kinda parallel with OCD except the thing you are OC about is your apperance.
    Info on BDD

I used to be pretty obsessive compulsive when I would exercise. I would have to do a certain machine for a certain amount of time or I would tell my self something ''bad'' would happen.

Or that something ''good'' would happen if I did certain things that were out of my control. Like count to 20 before the traffic light turned green.

OCD can defenitly get out of hand pretty quickly. I always felt like it was a way to have some kind of control over my life through things I could not control if that makes any sense at all

I have a severe case of OCD, But the best way I can explain it is...

A normal person does something when it needs to be done.

Whereas, Someone with OCD can't function normally without it done.

I've had anxiety attacks over stupid shit.

Meea, I too use to do that with the stepping. Though I would step over and over in the same spot until it felt right to me. Like 5 times. I use to have to do things 5 times. I got on prozac for my disorder which got much worse after my daughter. I have since gotten off of the prozac, around a year know and Iam ok but I fear it will come back like before. Its hard to do anything when you have to do things 5 times. It takes up your entire life. I use to also go back and check that any electical appliances were off before I would go anywere. Its completer torture. And its a disorder not something we do to combat depression. To the poster who suggested that.

Like I mentioned earlier, and like Michele said, it takes over your life. If you don't submit to your obsession you feel like it's the end of the world. You get anxiety, terrible mood swings, paranoia... You worry, cry, become afraid of some higher power "smiting" you because you didn't count to 20, or because you stepped on a line, or 1 germ got on your finger...
I think this disorder is very underestimated and underrated. For me it was very serious, for 5+ years and counting

OCD is a very real disorder. It differs from a bad habit in the sense that a bad habit is usually something you are so use to doing, so common, that you barley realize you do it anymore. A bad habit doesn't really control your life it's just there.

OCD is an anxiety disorder characterized by unwanted repetitive thoughts (obessions) and/or actions (complultions) In my experience with ocd I cleaned my apartment 2x a day in the same way same order at the same times everyday...But mine was temperary or at least I was able to ge it under control. Most OCD cases live in fear of not completing or carring out their ocd actions for fear that something bad will happen

Bump - I had meant to post about this before but got caught up with other stuff, and it's crossed my mind again.

Going back to Jenny's original question, would the following things be considered simply bad habits, or OCD?

    * Consciously, I always double-check things that need to be locked. Front door, windows, car doors, my safes and drawers at work. All this despite the fact that I live alone, have my own office, and haven't had a visitor to my house after dark in the three years I've lived here.

    * Unconsciously, I always eat things in proportion (for example, I eat sunflower seeds in even numbers. When I make breakfast, the number of pieces of sausage and bacon are in proportion if they aren't equal.)
