    Default Owww! My knee!!

    Hey!
SO I've been working pretty hard for a few days...and my knee is so swollen I can't squat down at all....I don't know what to do, last time this happened it was from bending over too much at a school dance in 8th grade, and I had to have the fluids sucked out, but I really don't need to be spending the money.... Any helpful suggestionsout there. (I hope I am not one of those people whose joints are too weak to dance..... )

is it one knee or both? if it's really killin you it's probably smart to make sure you didn't tear a ligament or harm your meniscus. was there a specific incident that led to the injury or did you just go home and wake up to it swollen?

Things I've learned from being a college athlete with a shoulder that required surgery to repair (may also apply to the knee): If it is sore/swollen, ice and advil. Lots of ice. Get a couple big bags and wrap around the entire knee. Work with 20/20 (20 minutes on, 20 minutes off). Advil, Tylenol, Ibuprofen, or any kind of OTC anti-inflammatory will probably help. If it persists for 5-7 days, you probably will need to go to the Dr. You might also look into an Osteo Bi-Flex, or Chondroitin type pill or supplement to promote joint health/strength. Our pitcher has torn her ACL 3 times, and had 5 knee surgeries. She has to have it drained about 3 or 4 times a year. I had a huge piece of torn cartilidge in my shoulder, and after I had it surgically repaired, I have to heat for 10 minutes b4 games, and ice afterwards. Stretch it very gingerly. Do enough to get a good stretch, but no pain. My physical therapist said "everything should be pain free. If you feel pain, STOP."

After you get it feeling better, and decide to work again, invest in a good heating pad. Heat the knee before you work for at LEAST 10 minutes. Hell, you could even do it in the dressing room while you're getting ready. Most heating pads have ties on them for that purpose. Don't do any radical moves. Ice it after work.

    Hope this helps.

P.S: I forgot about the other option. I don't know if would be reasonable for you, but one other option before surgery is the Cortizone injection. That was an option for me, but I said no to that one, as I am terrified of needles.

Great advice DSubu19.... I have to agree lots of ice!!! I use to dance in competitions and teach, and if you ask me you should go see your doctor if the swelling doesn't go down after you follow DSubu19's advice.

    Here you go from Medline:

Rest and avoid activities that aggravate the pain, especially weight bearing activities.
Apply ice. First, apply it every hour for up to 15 minutes. After the first day, apply it at least 4 times per day.
Keep your knee elevated as much as possible to bring any swelling down.
Gently compress the knee by wearing an ace bandage or elastic sleeve. Either can be purchased at most pharmacies. This may reduce swelling and provide support.
Take acetaminophen for pain or ibuprofen for pain and swelling.
Sleep with a pillow underneath or between your knees.

    Call your doctor if:

You cannot bear weight on your knee.
You have severe pain, even when not bearing weight.
Your knee buckles, clicks, or locks.
Your knee is deformed or misshapen.
You have a fever, redness or warmth around the knee, or significant swelling.
You have pain, swelling, numbness, tingling, or bluish discoloration in the calf below the sore knee.
You still have pain after 3 days of home treatment.

I may have many faults, but being wrong ain't one of them.

That is great advice DSUb19 and Muyaha!!!!
I have a similar problem with my knee popping out if I do certain dance moves. I dont do those anymore. LOL Anyways....I dont wanna be all mom like but....if you have any persistant pain GO SEE A DOCTOR. I cant stress how important that is. Those are your joints and most of the time you only get one chance and they are hard as hell to repair and stay normal.
Just take care of yourself with the above adivce and no skipping stretching, heating pads and the ice and you should be fine.

    Question:
what do you guys tell the doctor when there is no other logical explanation for why your knees, elbows, wrists, arms, neck, back hurt? What do you say if they ask what motion you were doing to get that pain? Are doctors surprised when you tell them you are a dancer?
Just curious cause my arm has been hurting for 5 days and all I've done is take ibuprofen, which makes my tummy hurt.

How tall are your shoes? I just got 7" shoes and after working in them for 8 hours, my knees were swollen and sore. And of course, the more hours you work in those high shoes, the more your knees and the rest of your body will ache. At least that's how it works for me. Take a few days off to give your knees a chance to replenish themselves, and use the ice and Advil. Arnica gel works great for bruises. And if you are dancing in superhigh shoes, try alternating and dancing in them for only a few hours and then switch to something with a lower heel. That's what I'm going to do. I love my 7" shoes--they're so pretty, but they kill my knees if I wear 'em too long and I can't do anything gracefully in them but stand there! I'm gonna get some itty bitty heels next. Good luck with the knees!

honestly it sounds like you have imbalance of muscle strength. if your outer quad is stronger than your inner quad it will pull your knee cap towards the outside, this can cause the knee cap to want to come out of it's groove and rub, this is quite common. if you want some exercises just send me a pm

Just take it easy on the knee. If you work out, stay away from squats and insanely heavy leg presses. Just as doctors and therapists say that very strong abdominals are the key to a healthy back, very strong hamstrings are the key to healthy knees. Do some reverse leg curls (bringing the ankle toward the butt). Don't do anything too heavy. If you do cardio, get on a Eliptical machine and peddle backwards. Stay away from the treadmill and stair-stepper. My therapist told me, for my shoulder, for every push, do twice as many pulls. So for every, say 10 minutes forward, go 20 minutes backwards. you need balance, especially in such a vital joint. Just take it easy. The heels don't help the situation, so, just remember to sit down every now and then. Sit when you talk to custys, or just sit and look sexy, however you can do it. Just be easy on it, you don't want to have replacments by the time you're 50.

MY old gym had a machine called a Butt Blaster...it was so good for me. I am starting to do my strength training exercises from physical therapy again, I definetely have an issue of muscle imbalance. Thanks for all the help girls!

I also have knee problems. My right knee is hurting so much this week. My chiropractor said I have swelling under my patella (haven't looked it up yet). I have figured out that the squats, and doing the splits are making it happen, along with floor work. Mostly all because of the shoes. I take arnica, which usually keeps most of the other joint pain I have away, but I'm taking lots of ibuprofin this week. Good luck to all of us with swollen and painful joints.

I forgot--you can wear knee braces to help support your knees. I have seen girls do it and they still make lots of money.

How long on the Ice?? As in for how long after it happens? Someone told me the ice was mostly just for swelling... it's not swollen anymore but it still hurts and is bruised pretty nastily (I'm not sure if that is from the injury or if it's an unrelated from just hitting it on the floor...

    Thanks
