    Default Back pain...errrrr

OK for the past couple months Ive been having chronic back pain!! Oh god it hurts I take everything from Perckaset, Ibprofen, Vicodin, Tylenol etc. Heating pads too. And still it comes back. Sometimes it lasts for weeks and I dont want to do anything but go to my job. This inhibits me from doing pretty much anything else. Working out is now down to nothing and some days I dont get up and take a shower for hours (Im not dirty Im just in pain). Alot of times I get hungry and dont want to move because it hurts.

Is there anything I should be worried about? Does anyone else have this pain and what do you do besides chow down every pain killer in site? Im afraid of ruining my kidneys and liver or something because I always take more Ibprofen and Tylenol than recommended.

go to see your doctor. You'll probably need a battery of tests, xray, mri maybe, and possible a nerve conduction test.

Yes Tiger...go and get checked out. See if you need to see a phsyiotherapest or a chiropractor. You might need a little bit of therapy depending on what's wrong. Take care.

I also have horrible back pain. Now I know the last thing you want to do when your back is hurting is exercise but I swear it helps so much.
Just doing some light cardio will work wonders.
However, If you are in to much pain for that I would suggest going to a chriopractor and getting an adjustment and an x-ray .
A massage also works miracles. If you can afford to book yourself an appointment or ask a friend or boyfriend to give you one.It will at least help relax your muscles and if you have a pinched nerve it will help relieve some of the pressure even if it is just temporary.
Also try Soaking in a hot bath with epsom salt.(there is also epsom ointment that you can apply to the painful area,it's smells horrible but it works)

Where is most of your pain located?
Mine is in my Sciatic nerve which is one of the largest nerves in the body so when it starts acting up I cannot even bend over. When it's really bad I cant even get out of bed.
I usually have my boyfriend or my mom try and rub the pain and knots out by massaging directly on the area. this usually offers relief for a few hours.

My sciatic nerve started bothering me when I started dancing. There was one week when I could barely walk the pain was so intense.
I know how bad back pain is so I hope you find the source of the pain so you can try and work on making it go away.

Also, I would try to only take your pain pills when the pain is really bad because if you develop a tolerance they will not work as well plus as Im sure you know they can become addictive so be careful with those

Here is some info on the sciatic nerve. You mighnt want to take a look at it and see if this could be where your pain is coming from

And some info on chronic back pain

Hope this is of some help to you

Aww thanks hun...yea I dont workout b/c it hurts so bad. I do notice that when I do it feels a lil better but like massages and that its only temporary. I get to thinking "anything to make it stop!!". I try not to get addicted I only take half a Vicodin or Perc.
Mine is all in my lower back and makes it hard to do things and it sucks.

Pain is worse when you cough or sneeze

Pain or numbness travels down one or both legs

    Pain awakens you from sleep

You are finding it difficult to pass urine or have a bowel movement

Pain is accompanied by loss of control of urination or bowel movements......I have #3 and #4....I should see a doctor. But, untill then I need to find someone quailified. Is it better to a see a chiroprator or just a physician?

I personaly would see a chriopractor because they will actually work on correcting the problem with ajustments, massage, and realigning your spine(if its out of place).
Where as a doctor is more likely to just precribe some meds. and maybe do a few tests.
I don't know if you have insurance but it mighnt be worth it to go to both a chiropractor AND a doctor just to be safe

You could also look into accupuncture. I don't know too much about it myself but know some people who swear by it.

You should defenitly get an x-ray because then you would be able to find out what is causing all your pain. And see the problem.
I could not believe how screwed up my neck and back were untill I saw an x-ray. I have a curve in my spine and my spine leans way too far over to the right side(which is the side most of my pain is on) plus, my neck is 2 inches off where it should be. My entire back is a freakin' mess

Whatever you do decide I hope you are able to get to the root of the problem because living with constant back pain sucks!
Esp. if it is so bad that it is limiting what activites you do.

Hope your pain gets better sweetie
Let us know what you decide to do.

Just to throw in my own experience here...because I am extremely sympathetic to your plight. I have arthritis in my spine, and very little cartiledge left in my lower lumbar area. A few years ago I was flat on my back for about a month, and periodically after that. Sitting hurt...standing hurt...sleeping hurt...breathing hurt....and it was all in my spine.

You could have muscle pain, spinal pain, or siatic nerve pain. A physician can help you find that out. If it is spinal, a chiropractor may help. Mine did absolute wonders for me.

Here is an exercise that I do for my back. Every morning and night and any time it hurts - lay flat on your back...put one leg up a little (don't lay either down flat...it'll bend your spine) and grab your other knee with your hands. Pull that knee to your chest as far as you can without hurting. Count to 60. Put that leg down and pull the other leg up...and count to 60. Do that at least twice with each leg.

Also...when you're sitting, make sure you are sitting straight...like in the shap of an L. For sleeping - put a pillow under your knees so that your spine doesn't bend.

Might not help......but it certainly won't hurt.

If there is pain and numbness shooting down your legs go see a doctor! you need to have a MRI done and sounds like you'll be referred to a neurologist. I have a herniated disk as well as bulging disk in my L4 and L5 vertebrae. Sounds like you have some sort of disc damage. to help with the pain for now use ice. just grab a bag of frozen peas out of the freezer and put it on your low back just until it gets numb, not to long because there is not much muscle for fat mass there. Also make sure that you are stretching good especially your hamstrings but make sure when doing this that you have your back in a neutral position, don't bend over.

you can go to a chiropractor but he/she will take a x-ray and if they see any abnormalities with the disc they will send you to a neurologist

These are great ideas. MoJo Im going to try those excersises for my back. Heating pads and ice helps depends on what I feel like doing.
I dont have insurance but Im sure there is a place somewhere here that I can go to for at least a sliding fee scale. Thanks for the advice you guys are awesome!!!!

Let us know how it goes. Also, keep in mind that if you have an sort of swollen vertabrae/cartiledge, then heat could possibly aggravate it by making it swell more. At the same time, cold could tighten back muscles.

Honestly, I like heat, too...but it has been so bad, I would have thanked someone for jabbing me with needles just for a distraction.

I have back pains as well.....Especially if I sit up straight for too long, or even stand up straight for too long. My doctor wanted me to have surgery but the risks are too high for me.

I do pilates and it helps my back tremendously. Pain in certain spots of your back can indicate a bladder infection or other problem (read that in a magazine the other day) so I'd see what the doctor says.

See a doctor for an MRI (to examine for soft tissue damage) and an X-Ray.

Then, bring those results to a reputable chiropractor; good ones work miracles.

You can have an MRI on different parts of your body. I've had them on my head a few times. They are quite expensive.

I also do pilates, it definitelt helps!
It could also be your mattress if it's old it might have sunk in and now is causing the pain in the night..
I once injured my back learnign a pole trick and my dance instructor (modern dance and she's also a doctor) recommened a few back excercsies, the were so similar to pilates that I stuck with them.
I recommend Denise Austin, she's cheerfully annoying, but her stretches are the best! and any minute workout.. I always start with Denise then do another DVD and then back to her for the stretches...
    Good luck!

My SO had 2 hernea discs. He was always in great pain due to his welding occupation. He popped pain killers and became addicted,so be careful. An alternative to the pain killers,Try Cortizone shots,They are suppose to be great and last a while. He had tried the chiroprator and didn't like the results,He said his back fealt worse as if the chiroprater was all bullshit.Another suggestion is Wallmart has these pills taht are suppose to make you grow cartlidge,I forget the name of it but if you ask the pharmacist,He might be able to help you find it....

TigersMilk, please lower the doseage of painkillers- I was doing that too for a while and had to go to the hospital for stomach pain (the Ibuprofen can aggravate/cause ulcers.)
I have back pain too and this is what I do to fix it:
Soak in super-hot baths with Epsom Salt. With your back flat against the bottom of the tub and your knees pulled up.
Use a heating pad, and "un-kink" you back when the muscles warm up.
Stretching excercise and other exercise in general. But don't do anything that hurts!
My friend does yoga and claims it helped her back pain.
It sounds as if you need to see a doctor. I hate to tell people that because it can get expensive, but if other posters are correct in guessing you have nerve damage, the consequences could be worse than a big bill.
