Default The Causes of Stripper Burnout

I'm just curious what causes some of you to feel burned out or tired of dancing.

The flexibility that this business gives us allows us to move to many different cities and find work within days, work when we want or choose our schedules, and not have to put up with the rat race of an 8-5 job, rush hour commutes and bosses breathing down our necks, plus the ability to control our earnings, earn more than most of us could at a salaried job, get cash money daily, and yet many of us still grow tired of stripping.

I know what things get to me in this business but I just wanted to see what things cause burnout in other dancers.

I got burned out real quick after I 1st started the main reason for me was not taking enough time for myself and I just couldnt stand men ( I didnt handle certain situations in a better money making way). Not that I hate men or anything I just didnt take care of myself as I should have in alot of areas.

working too much is my first way to burn out.

I may have many faults, but being wrong ain't one of them.

I recently suffered from "burn out" for one reason and one reason only (and it is similiar in vein to what TigersMilk mentioned)...... one of the parts (or a big part?) of being a dancer is sales. Anyone who really knows anything about sales will tell you it is alot mental and a little physical.

I worked HARD over the last few/several weeks leading up to Christmas and just after Christmas. I crashed and burned due to not taking care of myself... not making sure that I'm MENTALLY healthy. Plus just all the stress that I had experienced (in whatever form) finally caught up with me as well.

Mix that with a slooooooooow week earnings wise .....

I do this full time (as such). It is the only way I can support myself whilst I build up my other businesses (yes, my Goji juice is one of them). Therefore, I still have to work if I want the rent, phone and other basics paid.

Also... it isn't as easy as you think about working in another town esp. if you have to fund your own way to/from there. You have to have the money to be able to afford the accommodation, airfare, food/meals and so forth. Then there is the fact that you are not guaranteed to do spectacular-ly well in that other town (even if other dancers have reported back doing good).

Granted, sometimes all one needs is to surround oneself with four different walls. It is amazing what an overnight (or even 2 night) stay at a nice local hotel/resort can do for you..... or just work in a different club temporarily....

Burnout comes for me from staying at ANY club too long. Right now I feel stuck at my current club because of school and where I live now. I like the hit and run vs. the need to build regulars. I need variety and new faces. I like to be mysterious and not have people know me too well. In my current club, I would say it is high mileage. Which I am not too fond of or even very comfortable with. I get disgusted with the guys the girls...all of it. But I love to dance, love the rush of being on stage...I just hate my club.

Working too many nights in a row and feeling like I haven't been making any money. I try to work only 4 nights a week, no matter how bad they've been. It seems that the more nights I work after doing bad, the worse each night gets.

I'm not trying to take you apart or anything, but I feel like a lot of the good points of stripping don't apply to me, sometimes.

    >work when we want or choose our schedules,

Except when clubs start requiring minimum schedules, like my club that requires 3 shifts or 21 hours a week. Or the one in bristol with at least 6 'choice' days a month. Or mine with the "we have too many girls that day, you can work Wednesday instead of Monday."

    >and not have to put up with the rat race of an 8-5 job,

Instead we get the rat race of 20 bitchy coworkers who don't want to go out of work with less than they came in with and 5 customers to fight over?

    >rush hour commutes

Granted, I'm going /against/ rush hour traffic, but it's still there. >.< I hate stop and go!

    >and bosses breathing down our necks,

Instead we have bouncers and managers breathing down our necks.

    >plus the ability to control our earnings,

Not quite sure what you mean here, you mean the ability to be like "I'm going to be uberaggressive today" or more laid back? One day, maybe.

    >earn more than most of us could at a salaried job,

I'd like to break what I made in 2004, what BigGreenMnM described as "what managers at the mall make!"

This is me in a "I sold one whole dance today and just had to shell out half of my earnings to pay for a motel close to work because weather is crappy tomorrow" mood. I need some heavy meditation.

The two things that I found that cause stripper burn out the most are:

Working in a club w/o good management. Why ? because then the staff, the customers other dancers will treat you poorly and get away with it. This wears on anyone.

Being too focused on the job, not defining your stripper self from your real self. If you eat, breathe and sleep club life it gets old REALLY fast. I think it's best to have some non dancer friends and to spend time with them often.

I second that! In my 6 years, I've done it both ways, and the latter is definitely the way to go for me.

    Tigerlilly's words are spoken true!

My current home club .... the bad (main dancer) manager is on leave for two weeks! YAY! Only one more week then she is back.. not so yay. I have no respect for her and she keeps showing her incompetance/abuse of her position over and over. Whilst I used to let it get to me more than I do allow it now... it still does get to me. I still am whenever I think or mention her. I dislike working with/around her and minimise my contact with her.

Being too focused on the job as well as working a little too hard can sometimes go hand in hand. When you work alot of hours and days and therefore all you do is work, go home, sleep, wake up, eat, do some stuff, prepare for work, go to work... and repeat this routine for quite some time with only a day or two "break".... it can and does get to you. That is how stripper burn-out got to me last week.

Therefore, I went out with a guy friend yesterday to the beach and had a great (yet tiring due to the fun) day... and am concentrating a little more on my other businesses so I am not defined as just a stripper.

Oh yeah... I avoid going out to "the clubs" locally at all costs. If I wanted to be surrounded by drunkards, I would go to work where I would at least be able to earn something from those same drunkards. I can still have fun without having to hit "the clubs".

It seems to me that the longer I am a dancer, the more I become focused on work and money, and not the more important things in my life

I bought my horse two years ago and started dancing shortly thereafter in order to afford him. This past year, I have seen him less and less because it is to exhausting to drive 1 hour to the barn and then go to work, and on the days I have off, I'm worn out from working and I don't have the energy to do my daily household chores and go to the barn. (before I became a dancer I managed horse farms and gave lessons so I saw him every day)

Most of my friends now are dancers, which also contributes to burnout.
we talk about what a good night or bad night it was a lot.

I started dancing so I could have financial freedom, but I now see that it comes with a price.

In the beginning I thought, wow,.,... If I could just make a couple thousand dancing, I would be all set and I could quit.... (honestly) .... welll,,,, two years and a whopping mortgage payment later... I'm working 3-4 nights a week and not doing much else.

I love my job, but it does consume me.

    thats what burns me out

thanks all for letting me get that out

Actually a 9-5 job seems much easier. Hell it is. You know when to be there, when to eat luch, when to leave. You know you will get paid. It's easy, at least for me.

Traveling, looking for that better club would tire me, hustling, on my feet, taking clothes off, putting them back on etc, etc. That's all hard work. Not to mention a few shitty nights, and the worry hits, that alone will cause burn out.

I like the feeling of a secure job with "set" hours and benefits. But that is me. On a side note, i like thrill seeking jobs too, but have to take a break, or i will burn out.

For one, working at a club where you're always on time, yet other girls come and go when they please, yet you never see them reprimanded for it. That comes down to disrespectful dancers who don't treat this like it's a "job". The long drives back and forth from work. One club is 2hrs and 15 min away, so I drive back and forth each day, not worth getting a hotel!

Also, burnout from working with chicks who don't respect your space in the dressing room, and are just plain rude, nasty, or fucking obnoxious.

    BS management/ ILLEGAL HIGH TIPOUTS!
    High overhead
    Idiot Customers
Bizarre Harrassment/ Stalking Incidents related to job

More and more, most dancers have to make dancing a "part-time" venture.

Also try to make sure you get out during the day if you work night shifts even if it's just to sit on the patio . Daylight is important to the being healthy and balanced . Working late nights shifts and sleeping all day then going back to work was not a good mix for me. I had to nip that in the butt at one point.

I am always in good with management otherwise I find a different club to work, so NO.

I ignore the other girls, so NO.

I work clubs where I can come and go as I please, so NO.

    What else is left....CUSTOMERS!!!

Actually, I think I burnout because I hustle too hard. I never stop moving, tell the guys what they want to hear to make the sale, am always upselling, am lying through my teeth pretending to be turned on by a man old enough to be my father, etc........

I'd rather hop around doing dances some nights and be physically tired but not emotionally drained. Other nights its the opposite. Very conflicting. So unlike an office job, it takes you out in both your body and your soul a bit. But the money is good and its mostly fun times...

Shit, I need to go in as soon as hair dries...positive thinking ladies!!!

    1. Management bullshit
    2. Customer bullshit
    3. Slow business

All are equally bad in my book, and I'll skedaddle in a hurry when any of these things exceed my limits. They often all go hand in hand.

After a very refreshing trip to Phoenix to work in a nice environment where money is steady and bullshit is low, I don't think I'll be going back to my Deja Hell club here in Baltimore

This happens to me all the time...pisses me off.

Slow business, working long shifts, dealing with catty dancers and rude customers, and not getting enough sleep are reasons that I go through burnout. I haven't worked at all this month and I'm finally going back to work in a little over a week. Luckily, I worked a lot last year so I can take some time off when I'm feeling lazy and I don't want to work, like right now.
