Uncircumcised Men May Have Higher HIV RisksThursday, January 20, 2005
    By Jennifer Warner

Men who have not been circumcised may be more than twice as likely to become infected with HIV after sex with an infected female partner, according to a new study.

Researchers say it’s the first study to compare the risk of HIV infection per heterosexual sex act among a group of men with multiple sexual partners.

They say the results may help explain the rapid spread of HIV in areas of the world where circumcision is not common and multiple sexual partners are, such as Africa.

Male Circumcision May Lower HIV Infection Risk

For the study, which appears in the Feb. 15 issue of The Journal of Infectious Diseases, researchers collected information on sexual behavior from 745 Kenyan truck drivers.

The men were tested for HIV infection and evaluated for circumcision status at the start of the study and followed from 1993 to 1997.

During the course of the study, the truck drivers provided information concerning the number of sexual encounters with wives, casual partners, and prostitutes and were screened for HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases.

At the end of the study, researchers calculated the probability of HIV infection per sex act using published data on the rates of HIV infection among the three types of sexual partners.

The results showed that the probability of the men in the study becoming infected with HIV after a single act of sexual intercourse was about one in 160. But uncircumcised men had more than twice the rate of HIV infection per sex act compared with circumcised men, one in 80 vs. one in 200.

Researchers say the rate of HIV infection from women to men in this study was much higher than in previous studies of couples in which the woman was infected and the man was not.

They say the higher HIV infection rates among men with multiple simultaneous sexual partners may help explain the rapid spread of HIV in Africa, where multiple sexual partners are common and male circumcision is rare.

i think that there should be a qualification testing board for all marriages... with classes like drivers ed., rules of the road, and include an intelligence test

There should be a lot of rejections!

not poking fun really, i seriously think there is way too much emphasis put on the legal thing - the restrictions for all the financial aspect (tax, etc) should be completely changed and extended to include anyone a person wants. Then perhaps the legal thing would not be so f'in important. how many people get "married" while still "just checking each other out", as Sly Stone says and might even be in the infatuated phase and not know it...

seems to me,the problem doesnt lie with the clean cut,or hooded american male.
Its the infected female partners they sleep with.

What I find interesting in this study is that 172 out of the 745 men never had sex with their wives during the study.

Since most American men are circumcised, this shouldn't be that much of an issue here. But since anteaters might cause my taxes to go up, they shouldn't get married either.

Obviously I am not advocating that uncircumcised men be barred from marriage-- my point in posting this health info was that uncircumcised men have a much higher risk rate than circumcised men-- basicaly it is to show how INCREDIBLY STUPID and HEARTLESS (imo) a person has to be to feel that people who have a higher risk rate for a disease should be banned from marriage.

Ofcourse their whole higher risk argument is just a cover up for their bigotry but even so the logic in the argument is massively flawed anyway because unless they feel that ANY and ALL persons who may have a higher risk rate be banned ( including uncircumcised men for example ) it is nothing more than discrimination to say only one higher risk group be banned from marriage

    Oh, man! WASH that thing!!!!!

Anyhow it isn't HIV risk that is the crux of the matter. It is the family matter and its biological imperative. Or are we too friggin' smart for biology anymore?
I loved going to strip clubs; I actually made some friends there. Now things are different for the clubs and for me. As a result I am not as happy.

Customers are not entitled to grope, disrespect, or rob strippers. This is their job, not their hobby, and they all need income. Clubs are not just some erotic show for guys to view while drinking.

NOTE: anything I post here, outside of a direct quote, is my opinion only, which I am entitled to. Take it for what you estimate it is worth.

The issue isn't washing it. The article did not go into the biological explaination as why the ratios for HIV and uncircumcised men is higher.

"Research has identified plausible biological explanations for a connection between HIV infection and lack of circumcision. The tissue of the internal foreskin absorbs HIV up to nine times more efficiently than female cervical tissue, mainly because it contains Langerhans and other HIV "target cells" in much greater quantities than the cervix or other genital tissue (including other parts of the penis). In addition, the internal foreskin has a mucosal surface, as opposed to the more hardened skinlike surface of the external foreskin. This mucosal surface is particularly susceptible to tears and abrasions, and, consequently, infection by STDs and HIV.

I may have many faults, but being wrong ain't one of them.

    Keep the tip.

Actually, it seems that you should have to fill out as much paper to get into a marriage as you do to get out of one.

That is, of course, if we can't just ban everyone for their own good.

I have heard that recently there have been a few gay divorces.

I, also, have surmised that the term "gay" might disappear from common use as meaning homosexual should gay marriages become the norm. (meant only as a cynical suggestion that happiness is just as likely to disappear from gay marriages as it tends to from hetero marriages, nothing more)

Then, during the third reconciliation of the last of the McKetrick supplicants, they chose a new form for him: that of a giant Slor! Many Shuvs and Zuuls knew what it was to be roasted in the depths of the Slor that day, I can tell you!"
