Default How to pick a cosmetic surgeon

    Ladies:

I have kind of an odd question here, but this is the mecca for cosmetic surgery questions, right?

I am looking for a surgeon willing to do something very unorthodox, but who will still not mangle me. It's for an art installation, not really to improve my appearance, which I think will eliminate a lot of doctors right there (the injustice of which I will not discuss here). Anyway, outside of taking the doctor's word for it ("Really, I'm good. Call these people who I have prearranged to say good things about me. Trust me. I'm a doctor") how do I find someone I know won't make me hideous?

Also, the procedure I am looking for is lipo. So. I would like some recommendations on where to be "lipo-ed" that will have the most limited impact on my body (I know this sounds weird). Like, I was initially thinking my abdomen, but girls carry a lot of fat there, and you only have like two fat cells, so I'm worried that I'll end up with really, really fat ankles or something in a year. Any ideas?

Damn it, Jenny, I was hoping that you were going to have a third breast added, or horns implanted, or an eleventh toe or something. Lipo pales in comparison.

Fortunately, you are in Toronto, yes? I am sure you can find a surgeon there who has heard it all before. Hey, I know! Find the surgeon who does sex change operations and ask him for a recommendation! They won't balk at anything .

Anyhow, I've never had any cosmetic surgery, (not that I wouldn't) so I couldn't tell you how to vet a Dr., but I am sure that some of the women here have some useful websites to share with us.

As to where to have the lipo, the tummy, right? How in the world could that give you fat ankles? I am confused. And then there's always thighs and asses. I can't think of any other places to get lipo unless you're really freaking fat, which you're not, or you wouldn't be stripping.

I am fascinated and hope to hear more about what you're doing.

Yeah, I'm definitely not REALLY fat (Except for in one thigh. But the other thigh is really disgustingly skinny, so I figure it averages out. And really, the fat is a good thing because it distracts other people's notice from suparating sores that are covering my thighs). But when you take out fat cells, they don't grow back and your fat has to go somewhere, right? So I worried that if I divert it from the stomach it will show up in my ankles. Is this irrational? This will not happen? I know I will need to discuss this with the doctor in question. We did consider horns, but I think I would have difficulty getting a job with horns. Although, interesting the piece that we are "reacting" off, does in fact have horns. Well, forehead implants. So they are sort of horn-y.

Um, no. I know it sounds weird. And I figured nobody here would be interested in the background of project, its inspirations or the "purpose". But it's not truly not as bizarre as it sounds. And, in case I wasn't clear, I don't want horns. I think I would not fit in at law school with horns.

Oh, you probably meant about my thighs? I forgot all about that. Yeah, I was kidding. Although that would be precious, wouldn't it? Like, "Hi. Can I sit on your lap? Just let me lay down this towel so that my running, puss-y leg sores won't stain your pants. Wait a minute, what's wrong?" That would be SO sexy.

You figured wrong, future lawyer, though I understand if you don't wish to elaborate here.

Also, I have known several people with cosmetic implants, ranging from horns to, um, genital "jewelry". But I would not swear that they received those particular body modifications from licensed medical professionals. You could always ask Orlan where she has her work done.

Oh, and apparently, if you do gain some weight after lipo, it distributes all over the body rather than all in one spot. It will be less likely to accumulate where you had the lipo, but it doesn't sound like you'd have to worry about it all winding up in one spot.

Ahhh! I don't even believe you know Orlan. That is precisely the jumping off point of our project! What we found interesting about Orlan is the distance she creates from her body - you know, Vive La Morphine. That while you are watching her surgeries, you are processing them through her distance and lack of love for her body - I don't mean in a greater sense, I just mean for that particular work. We thought it would be facinating to do it in a partnership, processing the work as a very LOVED body - my partner is my best friend since middle school. So we are seeking a medical person who will let us a) film the procedure, b) use a local instead of general and c) not mangle me. This is something that we talked about since high school, but after the grotesqueries on CSI and Nip/Tuck, and the variations of grotesquies on Extreme Makeover and The Swan and the like, it started to seem less relevent - not to mention my friend and I had talked it to death. But I was talking to some people (I'm actually not worried at all about guarding my ideas - does that make me naive?) and their interest in the project made us rethink its redundancy. We actually did a video art piece (we eventually scrapped it) called Girls On Parade that was originally meant to feature dancers (I liked it featuring dancers, but we couldn't find a club that would let us film.

You don't even understand how fast I am typing right now. I read "Orlan" and just got so excited!

Ooooh, Orlan was the first person I thought of when you said you wanted surgery for artistic purposes. What a great idea, we need more creativity in this world.

Me, I want lipo too, but I must be knocked out and its for superficial purposes, unoriginal like the rest of us

Heh, that's Anna Kournikova, but I would have to say that I couldn't see any spots on Katrie that needed lipo.

On Younge, just north of where they re-opened "aren't we naughty" there is an office bulding with a TD bank attached. Inside this building is the Toronto associasion for plastic surgeons, or something of that sort. Maybe you should check it out.
Besides, have you seen that guy on ripley's that wants to be a cat? His surgeries, tatoos, piercings, etc were done professionaly and filmed. I'm sure doctors won't freak out at your suggestions!

You want someone "unorthodox" right????......to perform not so right procedures on you. The only thing you wil get from that is about a 2000 discount, lumpy fatty thighs, and a world of pain. Im so serious.

    Here watch these mini clips......

She doesn't want an unorthodox surgeon or procedure. She wants to document and present the procedure in an unortodox way. I feel safe in saying she's not looking for a discount doc.

Thank you TigersMilk - Susan is right, I'm definitely not looking for a discount (I'm not even paying for it - grants) and one of my criteria is "not getting mangled". I am pretty afraid of the pain, though. I will look up the the association of plastic surgeons and see what they are exactly. Thank you everyone.
