Default Some conservative criticism of GWB

...from the op-ed of the Wall Street Journal, which is not by any stretch of the imagination a liberal paper...

    I like this part:

"It was a God-drenched speech. This president, who has been accused of giving too much attention to religious imagery and religious thought, has not let the criticism enter him. God was invoked relentlessly. "The Author of Liberty." "God moves and chooses as He wills. We have confidence because freedom is the permanent hope of mankind . . . the longing of the soul." '

Isn't quite the first time God and/or religion was invoked in an inauguration speech. Lincoln, of course, referred to God often, but let's forgive him for his indiscretions, because he was from a different time and place, wallowing in ignorance, that was a little more tolerant of a President being religious.

Here's one that's more recent, though. A few choice excerpts:

"...For I have sworn before you and Almighty God the same solemn oath our forebears prescribed nearly a century and three quarters ago."

"...And yet the same revolutionary beliefs for which our forebears fought are still at issue around the globe—the belief that the rights of man come not from the generosity of the state, but from the hand of God."

"...Let both sides unite to heed in all corners of the earth the command of Isaiah—to 'undo the heavy burdens ... and to let the oppressed go free.'"

"...With a good conscience our only sure reward, with history the final judge of our deeds, let us go forth to lead the land we love, asking His blessing and His help, but knowing that here on earth God's work must truly be our own."

    - From the 1961 inauguration speech of John F. Kennedy.

And Clinton and Carter weren't hesitant to invoke God either, if you want to talk about Democrats. I just get a little itchy whenever presidents talk about God, regardless of their political background. I think that part of what they are trying to convey, though, is the idea that America and Americans should answer to higher ideals rather than simply earthly pursuits; i.e., following the Golden Rule and caring for our fellow man. These are just and lovely concepts, and if a politician wants to refer to the deity of his choice to invoke them, I don't have a problem with that.

But using a specific religion or deity to push or justify public policy, eh, I could certainly live without that. I mean, Bush thinks God wants him to be president. I think that's a little arrogant at best.

actually, there are plenty of areas for Conservatives to criticize GWB - starting with his institution of an entirely new and very expensive entitlement program (i.e. prescription drugs). FDR and LBJ would think that GWB was a Democrat based on his social spending so far.

    A little correction...
Djoser usually has some pretty good posts... but as for the WSJ not being liberal... I think
what you mean is that the EDITORIAL page is not liberal, the rest of the paper (OP-ED too
of course) can be as liberal as some other papers. The editorial staff and news staff are very
seperate... I ought to know... I've worked for Dow Jones. Really, conservatives only get 1
page of the paper, although in theory most of the rest is supposed to be unbiased.
