Default How did you learn pole dancing?

Hey, everyone, first post! I'm a new dancer (2 nights so far) and I feel like I'm doing quite well, but I'd really like to add something with "WOW-factor" to my stage routine. But honestly, doing something on the pole for the first time while customers are watching would spell disaster for someone like me. So I'm wondering, how did those of you who pole-dance learn? Did you take lessons, buy a pole for your bedroom, or come in early to your club to get practice time in, etc? Thanks in advance!

I got to work at a club with frequent stage shows (small club, few dancers.) You can practice getting limber for the pole at home, or the gym, even though people might look at you funny. A large part of pole dancing is balance, pivoting, stretching and figuring out which tricks are best for you.

I used to practice after we closed.... I watched the other dancers and then stried to remember what they did, it takes a while, but soon you can make up your own tricks.
Please don't lick me, it tickles..

Good luck sweetie! I learned by practice, practice, practice..... Watching other girls on the pole is the best for you. If you can purchase a pole for home that's great, if not, go to a park and practice on the poles there. Sometimes I teach the girls after work to do tricks. Just pay attention to the pole girls, watch their every move and don't be afraid. Once you overcome your fear of the pole you can do anything. Advice given from your pole queen, Vaden

Yep, I learned from watching and practicing on Sundays or when the club was closed. Youll get it, and get the "wow" factor you are looking for, but it does take a little time

I watched the other dancers and the ones who I felt were the best, I would ask them for help. Most dancers are willing to help you learn new pole tricks.

Remember, the most important thing about pole dancing (or any dancing) is proper stretching and warm ups.

Start learning the basic spins. You'll learn how to position your hands properly...practice climbing the pole (it's harder than it looks)...to gain muscle strength. After that...the pole is your creative exhibition.

Thank you all so much for your input! The park idea is funny, but a good idea. We have lots near where I live, so maybe I can get some practice in when the tourists are gone!

Thats so funny, Ive been going to the park to practice new tricks for a while now and thought I was the only one who did that.
Kids watch but they think its a game so dont be put off if you pull a small crowd of them either. Monkey bars also are a very good workout for strengthening you arms and shoulders for pole work. Have 2 make sure you dont go thick pants as the poles theres are pretty slippery and to wear a thick hat...just in case..

I went to the park the other day but I didn't see any poles. The swings were fun though!

LOL Bunny!! I learned by just doing it over and over again. I didnt find this place until I after I quit dancing or I would have known that there was resources out there.
Yes, stretch before the start of your shift your body will thank you. Youll become more limber as your dancing career goes on. I could do the splits afer 6 months of dancing..but uggh not anymore tee hee. Also, before my day shift I would ask the DJ to play some songs and I could practice my pole tricks with the other girls.

kind of a dumb question...(oops! my inexperience is showing!! ) i always thought to do pole tricks, it required the friction caused by bare skin to the pole to keep you up on the pole and help you climb, but charly girl said not to wear too thick pants.. can one wear jeans on said pole and still acheive the same effects? does this mean i can practice without having to wait for shorts season? does this mean i should stop asking stupid questions and just go try it for myself god dammit? i could have been practicing all this time! to the park!!!

btw, anybody have any input about headstands on stage? i've been practcing but i don't want to die..bad idea? and what are the odds of me falling on my head and breaking my neck on the pole? it is the one fear i have that kept me from trying it before...

Dakota, it is pretty hard to do pole tricks with pants on. Friction is used allot in pole tricks. I can't wear pant outfits at work for that reason. I have to wear something that bares my legs. The headstand thing, I have seen it done but never attempted it. I do have a trick I do with a handstand and my legs on the pole..... No head though...

Boots work very well to provide friction!

thanks guys.. good thing i didn't try it yet.... handstand with legs and pole? sounds like something that takes a lot of strength and practice... how long does it usually take to build the arm and upper body strength needed to do all these things? i can barely do a push up. i do work out regularly though. what excercises do pole dancers do regularly to build that kind of strength? or is it all earned gradually on the pole? (sorry for all the questions...i just really like to condition before i start things..)

Weight train the arms...or just practice climbing up and down the pole. You don't need anything fancy.

Lol Dakota! Yes tight jeans work when you go to the park. Tell you an even better way when its cold out, go on the subway train to a car that’s fairly empty and practice on the poles there.

I used to take the last train to work, find the empty car and practice for like 9 stops until I got to ty xit station.
If you wear too thick pants you keep slipping. Jeans seem to grip ok.

Headstands are cool but I find they really mess up you hair worse than the other tricks
