Newbie here! Questions on how to go about starting out.

    Hey ladies (and gentlemen)!!

My name is Tara, I am 18, and I live in NC (Raleigh area, which I'll probably live at full-time next year, as I am thinking of transferring schools, but currently I also live in Wilmington and go to school here, just in case anyone lives in eastern NC too!).

I have never been an exotic dancer, but have been interested in it for a while now. I finally feel like I have the courage to take the chance and apply at some clubs and I just want to say the information on this board has been extremely helpful.

I do, however, have a few additional questions that I haven't found yet (I apologize ahead of time if they are on here and I just missed them!). First off, I wanted to go to one of the local strip clubs and see what kind of moves the dancers did, what kind of costumes they wore, the clientele, etc. The only problem is I wouldn't have anyone to go with. Should I go by myself?

Secondly, should I go ahead and buy some shoes and a costume before applying, in case I have to do an audition right on the spot? If so, what type of shoes would you recommend dancing in, the ones that don't have a strap around ankle, or the one's that do?

I apologize if these questions seem soooo trivial, but they are really an important part for me anyway, in deciding my next step. I really appreciate all of you taking time to help me out here. Thank you all so much.

hi tara!!! good luck on your auditions!! not very experienced myself but i do know that when you go into a club to see if they'll hire you, a lot of them might want you to start on the spot or later that night, or just audition, so i would definitely have a pair of shoes and a costume or two handy... also a lot of clubs don't let girls in by themselves, but even if they did, i wouldn't suggest it, jsut because i make it a general rule not to go anywhere with alcohol by myself in case some drunken dumbass gets any ideas...
ps, i alwas go for the ankle strap... the las thing i want is to be thrown out for killing someone with a flying shoe, or tripping over my own feet....

You should stock up on things if you are serious. I dont know what your budget is, but you should have (I think) at least three costumes, because some clubs require you to change outfits 3xs a night. Go for the shoes with the ankle strap starting out. has some really great shoes and deals. If you arent used to walking on high heels, stick to the lower ones, around 5 inches I would say. Platform heels have always been easier for me, since they have a chunkier heel, its easier to balance. But if you are really short, go for like 6 inches or so. You dont want to look like you have stumpy legs. Some girls have their nails done and have pedicures, ect. Some start tanning. Also, you might want to walk around in your shoes for a bit to get used to them so you wont go parading around on stage and fall or something. Thats about all the info I have on the questions you asked.

    Tara --

These are NOT trivial questions! A couple of suggestions --

    1. Do you have a boyfriend or a guy who is a good friend? Get him to take you to the club. It's a LOT easier that way. Also, call the club ahead of time and ask when they have their amateur night (which is often how clubs audition). Go then, but don't plan to audition that night. Plan to audition the next week. Dress to "fit in" but not like you're dancing. (When I first visited a club, I wore jeans and a polo shirt, and stood out like a sore thumb. Now-a-days, when I visit a club, I dress ALMOST like I'm about to climb on stage.)

    2. Yeah, you'll need to stock up on a couple of things, but first see what the girls in the club you're visiting are wearing and what sorts of outfits seem to go over best with the customers. No two clubs are alike. It doesn't help to buy a really flashy Las Vegas-hooker outfit, only to find that the customers in your club prefer the "school girl gone bad" or the "lingerie" look.

    3. When you DO visit a club, try to make friends with a couple of the dancers. However, time is money, so be prepared to tip the equiv of a table dance ($10 - $20 in most clubs) for a conversation about what that clubs like. Most dancers will be very honest with you.

    Hey!

Thank you all so much for all of your help. I went and got a costume and shoes (the one with straps around the ankles). Then I went to the club to audition, but they hired me and I started that that night! It was really a good night. The manager and girls are sweet and I had a great first night. Thank you everyone!
