Default My knees can't take it!!!

    OMG I am in pain
I've just started stage shows and my knees are badly bruised. They are purple and black all over...it really hurts. Will my knees get stronger with time? Or is it something I have to get used to? I've never bruised easily at all, so I'm just a little worried and achy right now

1 Soak in a hot Epsom salt bath, rub Ben-Gay on your knees and wrap Ace bandages around them before bed.
2 Re-train yourself to not batter them on stage. Rock back on your shins/ calves when kneeling, squatting or crawling.
3 Buy some knee-high/ over the knee tight vinyl boots. I knew a crazybad stage dancer (backflips, somersaults, headstands) who never wore anything else- her knees needed the support from the boots.
4 Pat yourself on the back for working hard! And taking care of yourself.

Your knees will get stronger with time, don't worry. And like madmaxine said, you'll "re-train yourself" not to be so hard on them while on stage.

I use thigh high boots. Some vinyl will rip over time that's why I think PVC is a better investment. But your knees should get a little use to it over time.

I may have many faults, but being wrong ain't one of them.

I have sore knees too and I don't even do floorwork it's just from sqatting to pick up tips. I take Glucosimine Chonaditin for my knees it's supposed to be good for them. Also no running or lunges that would just aggrevate the damage we do at work. There's another thread on knee pain called Owww my knee! in body business- I think it's about one page back. That thread talks about how to ice your knee and how to do exercises in the opposite direction that you move your knee at work to strenghten it.

Arnica gel for the bruises. Works great--make sure you apply it as soon as you get home from work. The sooner, the better.

I still bang up my knees girl. I can't wear the boots because they get in the way of some of my pole tricks. Take your iron and all the tips the girls gave are great ones!

    Cianna-

I had the same problem when I first started, and yes it will go away in time. It (honestly) may take a few months- ibuprofen is your friend. I know it's hard (because you don't know what to do with yourself!), but try to stay off your knees as much as possible. Also, how thick is your blanket? It's worth investing in a thicker blanket- trust me!

Take iron pills to help with the bruising, and arnica, witch hazel and epsom salts will all help.

Your knees will eventually be almost indestructible- it's amazing how much punishment my knees can take now, without so much as a bruise!

Oh gosh I know Im so afraid of how my knees are going to hurt when I go back. EEeeekkk
Ive heard that strenght training ...at least doing light weights will help strengthen your knee. Like the others said just take care of yourself. Good luck sweetie!!

All the suggestions are good ones.

I didnt see knee pads for the boots though and thought i would toss it in.

Get kneepads sewn into the front of your boots.I have seen this often and you cant see it at all,on stage or off.
Some dont want to do the sew thing and just wear wrestling kneepads.
Depending on what color they are,you can see them sometimes and they do restrict with the elastic bandwrap that holds them up.
I would do the sew thing.

Thank you everyone for responding...I bought some witch hazel and ice packs and I've been using them. It is helping, but they just look so gross. I can feel my body wanting to toughen up though, I don't notice as much pain when I'm on stage as before. Boy it's hard work being up there!!!
    thanks girls,

Well,That's the reason I had to quit dancing,My knees are shot!the doctor says I need surgery, but I am afraid,I hear it's painful. But I find raising my knees above my heart helps ease the pain, and like scarlett said,Ibuprofin is your best friend!

Your knees will get better once you get used to the routine. But the epsom is the best, and also those new things that go on your kness and other joints I cant remeber what it is called, that works well. I think that they might be by Icy Hot or soemthing like that. But hang in there you will be a pro soon!

I don't know about bruises but as far as soarness in the knees, I have been having that problem since I started working with a personal trainer 3 weeks ago. He told me something like my knee muscles are not used to so much stress and that I should ice my knees every night even if they don't hurt after I excercise and to take Ibuprofin also for two weeks.
