    Default question about IUD's

I just went and had an IUD put in and they said that for the first couple of months I might have irregular spotting /and periods. I want to start dancing sometime this month, but am afraid that I will spot or something...gross. Has anyone had any experience with an IUD? Has it caused any issues while you were dancing?

The only issue mine caused while dancing was the heavy flow while on my period. Since I worked nude, I tried to avoid working on my most heavy days, usually the 3rd day. If I absolutely HAD to work I would just change tampons every 2 hours to avoid leakage.

Do you know what kind of IUD you have? I have a Mirena, it has a low-dose of hormones, similar to the pill. Reportedly, many women completely stop having their periods with it. I had one inserted about 6 months ago and now am FINALLY seeing my period diminishing. However, I did have light spotting the first few months...very annoying. But now it is way lighter than before getting the IUD, and hopefully will continue to lighten and finally go away entirely.

If you have a copper IUD (which doesn't have hormones), you may experience heavier bleeding. A friend of mine got a copper one, and she had very heavy spotting the first 6 months. It is now back to normal, but she said she wished she had the Mirena since it is still heavier than she'd like. I believe some women experience more bleeding/cramping than normal with the copper ones.

As far as issues with spotting, maybe you could just use a light tampon when dancing?

I still used tampons for a while after I got mine in. I had a lot of heavy bleeding for a few weeks.

I had the Mirena put in. Thanks for the info. I'm anxious for my periods to eventually stop (hopefully) I hope I don't spot too much these first few months.

I had a mirena put in a couple of years ago. The first three months I bled NONSTOP! and it wasn't any ordinary bleeding. No! It was this nasty brownish crud coming out of me constantly. Part of my problem could be that I have had problems with not getting my periods so maybe it all built up. I also had terrible cramps for a couple of weeks too. Then after that they pretty much stopped and now I haven't had many periods at all since. I will get a little spotty blood every now and then but maybe have had like 2 actual periods since then. The only scary part is that if I did happen to be the percent of a percent that the damn thing doesn't work, how would i know I was pregnant? So every so often I get paranoid and take a pregnancy test. I am so glad I got a Mirena and wish I'd done it sooner.

Does anyone have any bc pill- like side effects from the IUD w/ hormones. Such as crankiness, low sex drive, moodiness? I get this from all the hormonal stuff I'v tried so far, and it's getting a little old!
Does anyone have an IUD that does not have children? My GYN is reluctant to put one in me, he says it may be difficult to get in, since I haven't given birth. Does it hurt going in?

kermit...the mirena has the hormones but the copper IUD does not(it lasts 10 yrs) But the idea of copper inside of me just doesn't sound right I have 2 kids and am pretty sure I'm done. A lot of doctors say you are not a good candidate if you haven't had kids, or have more than one sexual partner....because there is a risk of infection. I don't know. I think everyone has different side effects from them but I had very uncomfortable cramping when they put mine in (and I've had 2 kids ) and when I sat up I almost fainted 2x. I felt better after about an hour or so. I never wanted to get one before I had kids because if there was any chance at all of something going wrong and then not being able to have kids....I just took the pill. But now I don't want more kids so I got one. I would get online if I were you and research both kinds of IUD's. Maybe that will help.

^^^^^ this is what i got from my consult with my doctor. First, they highly discourage any woman who has NOT has kids from getting an IUD. I gave birth so, i will be more open way up inside (anyone who had children will, and no men can't feel it's not a lose vagina, lol) which puts me on the list.

I can't take any form of hormones because of my heart, So...i may have to go with copper, which make the environment hostile to any sperm, as all IUD's do anyway. They don't stop sperm from entering, just make the conditions very very hostile, so the sperm has no (small chance, usually a tubal pregnancy if it happens) friendly route to enter and penetrate an egg.

    Sounds cool to me!

I tried to remember this all off the top of my head...so this is most of what i remembered.

My doctor told me it would hurt, and it did, but not as much as I was expecting. A girlfriend got hers the next day and her doctor didn't mention anything about pain, and she thought it hurt like hell. I guess it's just whateve your expectations of pain are...my doctor also gave me some pain pills as soon as I came in to lesson the pain. They have to dialate your cervix to insert the IUD, and I think that's where the pain comes from. I also had pretty strong cramping for several hours after.

If you haven't had a child, I don't think your uterus will "hold" an IUD. I think most docs try to insert it during your period, and you can't use a tampon for at least that period, it may pull it loose. And Sodapopgirl is right, you run the risk of an infection with an IUD which may interfere with your fertility, so most doctors won't give you one unless you are pretty sure you're done having kids. I was 95% sure I didn't want kids when I got my IUD, but now I'm only about 70% sure, so it's nice knowing it is reversible. However, it could also interfere with my fertility as well.

As far as side effects, my doctor said to expect less than on BC. The hormones are released in such a localized space, that they don't travel throughout your body the same as oral contraception. My pms actually seems better now, but I still get bloated...I wonder if that will stop if the periods stop? That would be wonderful!

Hi Newbie here... I have always had problems with this stuff. I went to get an IUD and Chickened out then the Dr. nuggested the Nuva Ring. It was the best thing ever, I went from bleeding every two weeks for seven days to now i have a little period once a month like clockwork. Best thing ever, hate to sound corny but it really did change my life.

hello ladies, as far as I was told, they really don't know how the IUD works. They only know that it DOES work to prevent pregnancy. I have the copper one (I don't want to deal with hormones at all) If you are not monogomous the IUD is not a good choice for you; if you were to contract an std it has a great chance of traveling into your uterus (Pelvic INflammiroty disease PID)

from what I've understood, the only thing the hormores do in the Mirena IUD is to decrease cramping and bloodflow, it's nothing to do w/ birth control. that's only what i've been told by the nurse.

I also have two children. I might want more in the future I don't really know yet. My mom had an IUD years ago and also had an ectopic pregnancy. She had an ovary removed. She probably had the iud that's now forbidden I can tell u for sure tomorrow.

My first one (iud) I had for 5 years then had removed because I was having really bad cramping. A year later I had the copper iud inserted again. I really find it to be the best choice of bc for me. I'm willing to deal with the heavy flow and cramping. :-)

as far as nuva ring goes, I liked that one well enough except there was definately an issue with expulsion, my b/f would call it "ring around the cock" if you get my drift....

I had a really bad reaction to the nuva ring.
I think I must be allergic to something in it because after I got it I broke out in a horrible rash all over my stomach and even on my arms and face.
I was not sure what was causing it but suspected the nuva ring .
Sure enough ,as soon as I took it out the rash started dissapering and was gone the next day.
The women's clinic said that my reaction to it was very rare and that a very small percentage of women have symptons like I did.

I still am considering trying the patch. I have heard a lot of good things about it and that it does not make you gain weight.
    Anyone tried it?

ahh the patch... ouch... i get severe migraines from the hormones in BC... some doctors think this is lessened with the patch because its not in pill form... however, theres like double the hormones in that damn patch than there is in the pill... however, ive heard from girls that dont have that problem with the hormones, that its good.. so it couldnt hurt to try it... but please, if the hormones give you problems.. this one will most likely not be better!! Good luck!!

Damn, Im not good with hormones eiether. And if there is DOUBLE the hormones then forget that.
I have been off all birthcontrol for a month and my body and weight have finally returned to normal and my breasts are not sore all the time anymore eiether.
Which is why I am so reluctant to go back on the pill or any other form of BC for that matter.
Unfourtantly, I will have to because I cant risk getting pregnant

I wish I was one of those girls who is not affected by birthcontrol.

Kermit, I have SERIOUS problems with birth control pills and I haven't with my Mirena. I have been moody somewhat but I've always been that way. With bcp's I get BAD migraines that won't stop and I don't have that problem with the Mirena. My doctor explained that since it goes directly into your uterus you won't have the same side effects and it's a VERY low dose. Also, I've never had a baby and my doctor said it was fine for me to have an IUD. It did hurt like HELL to put in and I cramped really bad right after but now it's fine.

Aaahh, maybe I should just bite the bullet. My Gyn is reluctant to go for the IUD, but we made a little deal - if I tried the ring for 3 months and still had side effects, he would give me the IUD. I have about a monthe left, and still no sex drive....... My poor BF! At this point, I would gladly suffer a day of pain to be able to enjoy sex again, and stop being a cranky bitch! Do they ever use anesthesia for these things? Maybe I can bribe them to?

I don't know how willing to use anesthesia they are, but when I have to have mine replaced I want it. They gave me one little valium pill and it wasn't enough. I went home and drank a lot of wine and that helped some but the insertion still killed me. I have seen my sexdrive lower somewhat but I also now have a serious boyfriend and didn't before and I think it is not the IUD but the fact that I'm bored with my sex life.
