Stripper Wins Damages After Tiger Attack
    Fri Jan 28, 2005 03:13 PM ET

TORONTO (Reuters) - A stripper mauled by a tiger in an Ontario safari park has won C$800,000 ($650,000) in damages because her scars meant she could no longer work, Canadian media said on Friday.

Jennifer-Anne Cowles was driving through the park nearly nine years ago with her then boyfriend when a tiger jumped into their car and tried to drag them away. The two insisted their windows had been shut when the tiger charged, although the park had challenged that.

The judge accepted the couple's testimony that the power windows had been inadvertently lowered when one of the big cats bumped against the car, frightening them.

In a ruling delivered on Thursday and reported in a number of Canadian newspapers, Justice Jean MacFarland said she could only imagine the "stark terror experienced by these young people during this horrendous event."

She awarded Cowles over C$800,000 in damages, almost half of it to compensate for income she would have made as a stripper.

Her musician boyfriend, David Balac, won C$1.7 million, because his injuries left him unable to work as an accordion player.

African Lion Safari, near Hamilton, Ontario, west of Toronto, said it is reviewing the ruling, but it insisted the park was safe.

"Hundreds of millions of people drive through safari style parks worldwide every decade and there are very few incidents causing injury," it said in a statement. "It is one of the safest activities you can do with your family."

Uh, I wouldn't drive through a safari park. Anyhow, a nice break from the usual "stripper stabs/ steals/ gets arrested in raid" story.

Her boyfriend WAS a musician though...accordion players are soooo sexy!

C'mon, there had to be ONE stereotype to live up to, right?

thats a little scary, we have the Safari in the Great Adventure Park in NJ but all the large cats are behind fences which obviously keeps them away from cars. The bears have little shock wires near the road which i guess would stop them, but if their mad enough i'm sure it wouldn't. Their lucky they even survived

I can't figure how being an accordian player is worth more in lost income damages . . .

There must be a Lawrence Welk revival on the horizon. Otherwise, I can't think of why.

What a story. Cool for them they got so much cash now. I wonder, do they have to do taxes on that $?

In the Great Adventure Safari in New Jersey a multitude of the smaller animals: baboons, monkeys, ostrichs, etc. climb on your car. I couldn't imagine something are large as a tiger doing that. That's quite a large sum for an accordion player. Maybe he was part of an orchestra or something. As far as how much they get to keep, they'll be lucky to keep half. In Canada people are even more overtaxed then we are.

Shouldn't he have been an out of work musician?

And it just goes to show that more money goes into paying accordian players not to play than to play.

Of course, my perspective is that there is an inherent risk in associating with tigers that they assumed when they entered the park. If you don't want to get hurt, stay out of places where you can get hurt. And, if you go anyway and get hurt, it seems a little much to ask someone to pay you for it.

Many Shuvs and Zuuls knew what it was to be roasted in the depths of the Slor that day, I can tell you!"

Actually I was an Industry witness for the Dancer in this case, Basically giving information of how much a dancer could make at that time in 1996,she would have been awarded more if she would have done here Taxes correctly-On the outside of the case she has been awarded a little more $$$$ the car manufacturer settled out of court and isnt mentioned in the final totals. She is actually a nice girl and just think of the Trauma of being attacked and not being able to go on stage or be seen in normal lighting settings and I was very surprised to see that she is still an exotic entertainer-she gets my vote for being strong.

Wow, I can't imagine going through something like that. I wonder if she is still with the accordian player?
