Default The influence of body language.

Most studies suggest that when we communicate with each other, the words we use are only a small part of the information content.

20% of the information content is in the meaning of the words we use.
10% of the information content is in the tone we use when we speak.

and 70% of the information we communicate is in our body language.

Our attitudes to people are very much conditioned by their body language - the amount of eye contact, how close we sit, what position our hands and arms are in, etc.

How aware are you, as either a dancer or a customer, of the other party's body language? Does information from body language influence your behaviour with that other person?

Actually, when you meet someone, their impression is based.
12% is based on what you say,
38% is based on how you look
50% is based on body language.

Depends on which textbook you read I guess, but I was curious as to how important non-verbal communication is in dancer/customer interactions.

Very important. At my "real" job (lol) we are taught about body language, speech, tone, and words.

These actions are not always read right however. Example: A customer comes in, seems kinda friendly, but has his arms crossed against his chest, tight. He may be cold. Many people would take that as another sign perhaps and walk off.

Also tone of voice, a biggie. Lots of people seem to shy away from a loud talker, but if a person can't hear well, they tend to talk louder.

Body language. If a man sits with his upper body facing you while talking, good sign. If we ladies take a seat we should always point our knee towards him.

May all sound corny, but i had to put these to the test at work. Just an example of many that people need to learn about in sales. The book body language is great! Since i depend on a persons body language more than speech. Some people are just shy and can't get the words out properly.

Hmmm...body language...is that like the movement I make when I take wads of cash out of my pocket? That particular form of body language seems to get quite a positive response in SCs....

    Title: Body Language

Yes it's a good book, i have read better. The hospital has us take classes on behaviour of people. What i have learned more than anything is how to judge others...Not good, so i try to read the moves of their body better.

I use them on myself (a test we learned) and ask friends what they think is on my mind. The whole mind body connection.

If i sit sideways to a friend, they say i am not into the conversation.
if i stare, they say i am a day dreamer, not listening....advice..Blink! Lol

So much to learn. Alot of it does not seem to work when i use it because, you just never know what the other person is actually feeling....Ever. They also say (during dispatch class) that if you ask a person a question, and they hesitate a tad and look up towards the sky to the right without moving their head, they are not telling the truth.

This is all just stuff i learned through classes that help you get along and understand people on the phone or in person, by voice or body positions. Oh well.

But yes, it's a great customer service lesson.

If they look to the right it means they're using their left brain (logical, sequential problem solving), but if they look to the left it means they're using their right brain (usually trying to remember the whole picture). Really. Sit someone down and ask them logical questions and whole picture questions and watch their eyes.

What's twelve plus fifty six? Eyes twitch right.
What color is my car? Eyes go left.

How to do you suppose such things could be measured...to 1% accuracy, no less!?

Anyway, my first impression of most people depends mostly on the content of their posts and the fonts they use.
