Can you provide a little more information, please? I was in earlier while Bambi was there and experienced no difficulties and would hate for someone to be unfairly accused of anything. Just a little evidence, please.

well while i was in there my comp got attacked 3 times and Bambi was putting a lot of jibberes on the chat screen. That is my evidence, only reason i thought it was bambi was because she or he was the only person in there. Sorry if it seems like im starting a hate campaign against Bambi, but that is not the case. I went in the chatroom 3 or 4 time to make sure and got attacked everytime.

no no - you didn't come across that way at all....I figured you had a reason...just wanted to hear what it was

The only stuff the screen was showing while I was in there was some sort of playlist stuff each time a song played on her computer. I experienced no problems. Of course, since it's running a Java Applet I tend to have problems with it anyway, but that's beside the point. Thanks for the head's up.

Ah.. Jibberish. Yep, definitely sounds like she/he/it was trying to hack. The jibberish was more than likely a code that's used on mIRC and other chat servers. If you see this person again in chat, please PM Me or Bridgette (we're chat Mods and can boot her out of chat), or you can PM Pryce if he's on at the time, and he'll do the same.

Below is an example of what virus code on mIRC looks like. Did it look like this? I've disabled the code, so don't worry, it's safe:

    (b24gMTp0ZXh0OiphKjojOnsgLmlnbm9y.ZSAkbmljay
    B8IC50aW1lcqAgMCAxMjAgLmpvaW4gI1NleGViIHwgLm1zZyAk bmljay.BXYW5uY
    SBiZSBhbiBPUEVSQVRPUiBpbiAkY2hhbiA/IGNvcHkvcGFzd.GUgdGhpcy0+AzcgLy93
    cml0ZSCgLqAgJCAkKyBkZWNvZGUoICQrICRlbmNvZGUoJHJlYW QoJHNjcmlwd
    xuLDEpLG0pICQrICxt.
    KSAkY2hyKDEyNCk
    gLmxvYWQgLXJzIKAuoCAkY2hyKDEyNCkgLy9tb2RlICQgJCsgb WUgK1IgfQ==,m)

So if it looked like this at all, it definitely was a virus attempt. I took out the "load" and "write", but a virus code includes that as well.
On mIRC, the virus codes generally will not affect you, unless you copy and paste the code, then it activates the virus.

Now, if her text said something like
    "Now playing: Yaddayaddayadda"
That was just an mp3 program, and she was just playing her mp3s

**I just checked, and we don't have a member by that name, so most likely it was someone from mIRC surfing channels trying to hack.***

Ok, so what hardware firewall is recommended? Is Norton Personal Firewall sufficient?

I should probably let Madcap reply to this.....but I will anyway. I think Norton is a software firewall, which is what he is referring to as insufficient. I use a wireless router, which has a built-in firewall.....so I presume that would be a "hardware firewall." I guess it works......I never have any problems

Look at it this way. The hardware firewall is the condom strapped to the Internet, keeping unauthorized things from coming into your system. The software firewall is "The Pill" inside your system, preventing unauthorized things that get in from sending something back out. You're safer with both because if the condom doesn't stop the invasion, The Pill will prevent a total hijack of your system.

    Here's an example...

Your best bet is a Hardware/Software combo...

Hardware firewalls are important because they protect against most forms of attack coming from the outside world. They can usually do their job with little or no configuration, and they can protect every box on your local net. But most hardware firewalls have a sort of Achilles' heel in that they typically treat any kind of traffic traveling from the local net out to the Internet as safe, which can be a problem (like the hassles with the 'SoBig' worm).

When you first set up a software firewall, you can specify which applications are allowed to communicate over the Internet from that box. Programs that aren't allowed to do so are either blocked or else the user is asked for confirmation before the info is allowed to pass. Therefore, it would likely intercept any shady kinds of traffic before it even left your box. One downside to software firewalls is that they can only protect the box they're installed on, the other is that they are usually one-way. Filtering info out but not doing much about info coming in (see a pattern here?).

Bottom line is that with any home or office broadband hook-up, a hardware firewall should be considered bare minimum, and backing it up with a software firewall on one or more boxes (and don't ever forget good anti-virus software) is almost always a good idea.

Hardware Firewall = Filters info in but not out...
Software Firewall = Filters info out but not in...

    Agreed.

And frankly, any router configured correctly renders the best software firewalls irrelevant and a waste of system resources.

If that is the case, maybe Pryce needs to have a chat with this person. Gosh this shit would have killed my computer a month ago. I just did not know a person needed all this stuff to run safely.

Or maybe a temp. ban from chat for this person?

Wow, because that is serious shit.

im running ZoneAlarm pro, which i find is working really well. However i do know of a lot of people who have had problems with it. Ive also got the microsoft firewall that comes with service pack 2, better safe then sorry.
Theres this really good anti spyware software that is free to download from MS windows website, its still in beta testing, but very good. If anyone is having trouble with spyware on there comp they should download this.

^ Get a $40 router at BestBuy and call it good.

All ports are closed by default and you don't have to commit system resources to firewalling.

    Amen.

I've had a DLink DI-604 for about two years and have never experience one issue with some idiot trying to get to my wonderful little computer. Hardware is definitely the way to go. You have total control over what gets allowed in and out. Hackers get the gas face.
