Default Alcohol Free 2 Weeks & Counting...

    Ugh.

So I completely quit drinking just over two weeks ago (having health problems, alcohol abuse, alcoholism runs rampant in my family....). It's getting slightly easier over time, even when some nights at work I'd give anything for a beer, only to chug it down and then smash it over some asshole custy's head!

But here's a new problem; the monstrous, beastly, two-headed fire spewing demon of deathly craving for sweets! AARRRGGGGHHHHH!!!!!!

So I polished off a box of swiss cake rolls, eating Special K cereal bars by the box, entire packages of starburst fruit chews in microseconds.....

Apparently this is a typical side affect when an alchy quits the bottle (booze being fermented sugars). God help me to overcome the proliferation of my ass!

Lo & behold, tomorrow, all sweets bite the dust! To the dumpster! Time to start anew! Halle*fucking*lujah! Healthy and slim!

Thanks for "listening", needed to rant.

I have so been there. I quit drinking about two and a half years ago, with the same issues, and while I never had much of a sweet tooth (while I was getting plenty of alcohol), I sure did develop one. First I dropped ten pounds from cutting out the whiskey and beer, then I put it back on with cookies and candy.

Your ass may "proliferate," but hey, at least Oreos are better for your liver than tequila! Don't be too hard on yourself; better that you suck down some sugar and stay sober.

Congrats and good luck to you.

I'm SO there right now. I'm on day 72 of no smoking/no boozing and I eat sugar like a maniac, when before I never touched the stuff.

My advice is to not try to give up the sweets- much more important that you avoid the booze, and as Susan pointed out, any weight gain from the sweets will be cancelled by the weight loss from no drinking. I'd say don't put any more restrictions on yourself quite yet.

If it really bugs you, try to consume sweets in the form of fruit, dried fruit and honey. At least then you get some health benefits too!

    Congrats!!!! I love it.

What you are craving is NORMAL, and this will pass. Beer breaks down in our bodies as SUGAR. This is why ALOT of people who quit drinking experience a craving for sweets. It passes.

I love stories like these. Good luck ladies!!!

Good for you!!! thats so awesome, and im really proud of you! (even though me being proud of you, probably doesnt mean much to ya, lol) try replacing those empty sugars with sweet fruits. Fruits have natural sugars, and you'd be surprised how much they can satisfy that sweet tooth... dont keep the good stuff away though... the more you restrict, the more you'll just binge later. drink lots of water, i like water with lemon juice in it... fruits, even veggies... and come on, who feels guilty after bingeing on fruits and veggies?!?! good luck sweetie!!

goood luck girl!! i have cut all beer, champange and dark liquors form my drinking (slowly but surely.....but its more of a diet thing, i want to basically stop alltogether...)

Alcohol is empty calories anywas girl...so if yer smackin on the sweets instead of "the juice" it might equal out, but be careful....just do some butt squats during commercials (thats right...perfect exercise....by the time yer show is over you could get like 10 sets in!)

oh....and SPLENDA SPLENDA SPLENDA!!!! i always used to use sweet n low and equal and the nasty stufff to try and cut back on my suga. but splenda, the new artificial sweetner is made WITH sugar and it isnt as bad for you. they make pudding, cake, cookies, candy, alll sorts of good stuff...alllready pre-made!!! and it tastes really good, i swear by it. you can bake with it too. its alittle pricier that a bag of sugar, but its worth it if you're a coffeee fiend like me. or you can make crystal light with it, lemonade, VIRGIN daquris!!! now.....i dont know if they started makin oreos with splenda yet....but they should if they havent!!! haha

also, stick with the chewy candies instead of straight up chocolate bars. gummy candies and twislers, sour patch kids are very low n fat....but high in sugar! but there is candy made without sugar....just most of them are nasty....you gotta shop around for the good ones...try the sour gummy worms without sugar.

don't give up girl!!!!! asses come and go....you can get yer hot ass back if it gets a lil rounder, but you can't get your liver back!!
    fuck it.

    Megan
you could try taking a supplement called Glutamine, it reduces cravings. Also make sure to take B-complex to decrease the desire for alcohol. And on the herbal side you could try Angelica-scullcap tea to control cravings and passionflower-hops tea to regulate your blood sugar level.

I know this is an old post, but I just want to put my 2 cents in. I am currently 4 months and 18 days sober. Giving up the drink and drugs has been the single most important thing for me to do. Yes sugar cravings and binge food have come into my life, I have gained 10 kilos since I stopped drinking. It gets me a little bit down and I have stopped dancing for a while so I don't have to be around the temptation of alcohol.i plan to go back to dancing as soon as my recovery is a bit stronger. I am told the longer you stay sober, the sugar/ binge food cravings go away?
Anyways, I'm the biggest yet Hapiest I've ever been. I trust that in time the binging wl calm down and I'll return to my dancing career with a stronger mindset and loose the weight namaste everyone

Yay good for you!! I was 3 weeks sober until tonight, but I was able to drink in moderation and since it's a holiday, I don't feel guilty. I noticed I have been having CRAZY sugar cravings, too, and it makes soooo much sense that it it the alcohol. Thanks for the insight. Makes me a lot less confused now, I thought my period was coming way early.

I notice that berries and fruit juices (no added sugar, like actual juicing juices that you get from a juicer lol) help abate sugar cravings a bit, but remember that sugar is more addictive than heroin and your body is trying to fill that sugar void w something, so if the cravings are seriously intense, don't feel guilty about eating some toast w jelly or something.

^ UUmmm, you are far better off eating the piece of fruit than juicing it- the fibre helps keep you feeling full and regulate the release of sugar into your blood stream, if thats not enough then fruit fibre helps flush waste through your system and keeps you from becoming constipated.

It may sound strange but fat and oil are whats needed to fill you up- look into the principles behind the Paleo diet, I recommend Nora Gedhaus and Marks Daily Apple. Its a learning curve, and not everyone feels the same way about food/diet but I quit sugar (to excess) coming up 5ish years ago and have been Paleo for 2years now.

Tempest666 is also Paleo- you can find our threads on this topic all over body business.

    Detox yourself!
Alcohol is a toxin! You quit it, but it did not coplitly quit your body!
I do not drink over 5 years! I never liked to see my parents drunk. When i was a child, i thought i would never drink. But in our life very easy to get addicted to things. I dont beilive inherited alcoholism, by themself genes would not express unless you will expose yourself to alcohol.

I was talking about abating sugar cravings not feeling full or getting the most nutrients! It is better to just eat whole fruit, but if I'm looking for a sugar rush because I stopped drinking, I drink some juice. That's what works for me when I crave sugs lol.

Good job on quitting sugar! It's touuuughhh. I feel like I can quit everything except sugar because it seems like it's in everything, even though I eat a natural diet.

Sugar is seriously the most addicting thing ever. I quit alcohol, cigarettes, weed-no problem. Sugar? I'm trying but it's HARD.

Well, interesting fact alcohol is converted to sugar by your liver.
I myself have been alcohol & non smoking for many years. Ladies, if you want to keep your looks/health this's the way to go, IMHO.
Yesterday, I was in Walgreens, & HAD to have some candy..I bought a small dark chocolate bar w/hazelnuts, I don't remember what kind but it was delicious, & @ least had some benefit.
I eat usually @ least 1 grapefruit a day, yes they're a bit bitter, but your liver loves it. Along w/: artichoke, avacado, walnuts, some dark greens but I have to watch that w/IBs.
Your live is Key, I was a long time care giver for someone w/liver probs.

^^ Yes, it does, but I loved milk chocolate so much it was a hard transition at first. Now I prefer dark chocolate for sure. Dark chocolate covered almonds are the best!

Try eating almonds and other sweet nuts (unsalted). That always helps me when I'm craving sweets. Or if you really need chocolate, drink some hot cocoa. It's low in sugar/calories as it's mostly just water but really helps the craving.
