I've always been rather intrigued by James Lovelocks's Ghia Hypothesis, where he visualises the varying ecosystems on Earth as a superorganism that will react to changes in the environment.
The classical idea is that ecosystems are passive - i.e. they are affected by change but do not react to it. Lovelock argues that his super ecosystem actually has the capacity to react to climatic change and modify the effects of that change.
Now, I'm not enough of a biologist/climatologist, or whatever, to have an informed opinion on whether Lovelock's hypothosis is right or wrong - I just wish we weren't generating enough global warming to give his theories a practical test.
