    Default Deep-frying question......

Okay, I'm eating much healthier now in my old age, but I absolutely refuse to give up fried food! So, I've been trying to research on the internet which oils I can deep fry in that would cause the least amount of damage to myself. But, every single article I read contradicts the one I read before!
So, does anyone here have the answer? Is coconut oil the healthiest, or soybean & peanut oil? After spending a few hours reading all these medical articles, I'm ready to go back to frying in good old-fashioned lard.....

My mother in law always tells me olive oil. But I know peanuts are good for your heart. I have never heard of coconut oil though.

I'd stick to olive oil, but fried foods are usually done in peanut or vegetable oil because of their higher smoking points. It is important to remember that the higher the temperature, the less oil is absorbed into the food and always (ALWAYS!!) drain the foods after they are done frying.

Canola is good for the Omega-3s, if you think you might not be getting enough [vegetarians and vegans particularly], use that. Olive, especially exra-virgin, is good for you with the unsaturated fats - as I imagine coconut would be.
You can also rotate these - and yes, they get expensive, which helps in limiting the fried-foods in your diet!
Personally, I love the taste from olive over canola.

Stay away from all oils. They're hydrogenated and that will cause you a whole lot of problems later on down the line. Course that's easy for me to say since I don't like fried food. heh

You really need to find an oil that isn't hydrogenated (olive oil). Usually most health food stores will carry some oils that are healthier for you...

Aaahh, Venus you're killin' me.... I couldn't even name all the fried stuff I love - corn fritters, calas, hushpuppies, fried cornbread, I could go on and on. I'm just trying to reduce the sin of it all.

Well, sounds like olive oil is it! Are there any other oils that aren't hydrogenated? Now, I just need to find an italian grocery that will sell it by the vat.....

Heh, kermit I was raised in the south too, by a grandmother who is always frying stuff. She just used regular ole bacon grease, and sometimes canola. Fried EVERYTHING is what we always had, lol.

Well...fried is fried...Maybe you don't have to give it up. But moderation would be good
Olive oil or Flax seed oil. Yes..for frying. Its a lot better then the other oils listed.

I don't like any of that stuff.

Have you tried someplace like Costco or Sam's Club or some huge wholesaler like that? They usually have larger quantities than you can buy in the regular store...more inexpensive in bulk as well.

Ok being pregnant and loving fried foods to begin with, my midwives told me that Veggie oil is supposedly better. I'm guessing if thats what they tell pregnant women they would only want you putting the safer/better things into your body. Also when you take something out from frying make sure you put it down on plain white paper towel, and put another on top and tap it around to take off any extra oil thats on the surface of the meat or veggie.
