    Default Trojan virus

Does anyone know how to get rid of the trojan horse downloader virus? The anti virus programme I use has identified it, but I cannot get rid of it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Try running your antivirus in safe mode. If that doesn't work post again.

    Here's how...

    1) Update your Antivirus if it isn't already.

    2) Restart your computer

    3) Mash the f8 key before your windows starts booting up. You'll get a black screen with white lettering. Some choices will be "command prompt" "Lask known good" "Safe mode with networking" etc... Just pick "Safe mode."

    4) When it boots into windows, run your Antivirus.

The reason your AV can't remove it is probably that it's resident in memory. Safe mode only boots the stuff needed by the computer to run and nothing else.

Good way to deep scan for spyware, too.

Try it and if it works let us know. If not, i'll think of something else.

Post the name of the Trojan if you can.

What version of windows are you running?

The trojan looks like Win32.DlCust.A It's probably downloading adware.

What antivirus do you run? And do you have a spyware killer (adaware, spybot, etc)?

The F8 key bit can be a little tricky. The way I typically do it is once I turn the computer on, I immediately start tapping the F8 key about once every second until the menu pops up.

Court - download Adaware (free version) from http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

Install....and run it. When it is done you will have a list of programs it wants to remove. Click on every one so that there is a check mark (if there's a lot, highlight the first, hit the space bar, then the down arrow...it's quicker than a mouse).

Reboot and do it again. See if that helps at all.

Win32.DlCust.A is the name of the trojan, based on the dll file you mentioned. I put the name there more for myself (or anyone else that is familliar with it) than for you, so that i would remember it.

Make sure and update Adaware before you run it. You'll see a link on the main box that will say "check for updates now." If you don't have a spyware killer, you probably have a lot of spyware. Your box should run better after you clean all that crap out of it.

If the bug is resident in memory, adaware won't be able to remove it. It may ask if you want to run adaware on next reboot. That's the next best thing to running it in safe mode for the average user (who usually doesn't even know Safe mode exists). But the bug might resist that, even. If it does, try mojo's suggestion of mashing f8 over and over to get the safe mode option.

    Miss Courtney,

Here is a description of the trojan Madcap mentions.

    Win32.Dlcust.A

Here is a link for the adaware file that the guys are talking about.

    Adaware download

Here is another trojan remover although it might be a little outdated.

Also, with Windows XP...you have to "tell" the computer to start in safe mode...while you are in normal mode.

Dammit...I forgot how to do this...I'll get back to you.

That's what the F8 instruction is for. Safe Mode is one of the options.

When our computer got the trojan virus we ended up having to erase our hard drive and start over again with the recovery disc for windows xp. I just went through and saved as many files as I could before I did it. Now we run ez firewall and ez adware.

    Great reason to:

--Buy a $50 hardware firewall (a router; these stop Trojans and most keyloggers)

    --Stop using Internet Explorer

--Start using Firefox for your browser (it's free)

--Stop using AVG for your AntiVirus duties (it's not more than 85% effective)

--Start using Avast! AntiVirus (also free)

PM me (or Madcap or any of the other resident IT PLs here) if you don't know how to do any of this.

    Best wishes.

Hmmmm...my computer doesn't do that. I have to go into some menu while my computer is in "most likely to crash" mode and tell it to reboot into safe mode. It won't do it any other way.

We have "HomeSearch Assistant", "Shopping Wizard", and "180 Search Assistant" on ours, and nothing works to get rid of them. Our IE is virtually inoperable because of these insidious little f*ckers, and we even sometimes get pop-ups when running Firefox (which is superior in every way to IE) alone!

We downloaded a program called "CWshredder" which is supposed to help, but every time we try to run it, it pops up a little window saying it has "encountered a problem and has to shut down".

I tried joining a forum for fixing viruses, and they gave me an "easy' solution to these virus problems which was so convoluted and involved, I would rather chew off my own arm.

What I love is the way these trojans claim to help you "shop" and "search", like I would ever buy anything the motherf*ckers tried to sell me!

So we just use firefox and deal with the occasional pop-ups.

DJ, go to Webroot and download and update the free trial of Spy Sweeper; it's the most effective removal tool out there, though the Microsoft Spyware Removal Tool Beta is pretty good as well. You may have to run them in Safe Mode to get a full removal, but if you keep to Firefox, you won't have the issue again once you've killed the current infestation.

FYI, my F8 key invokes something other than Start Mode selection. It does what the mother board chipset BIOS tells it to, not what you'd expect.

I can't get to safe mode anymore. Or don't know how to either.

Further, what do you do if some Web Site refuses to load into Firefox? Or Netscape or Mozilla or Opera for that matter?
I loved going to strip clubs; I actually made some friends there. Now things are different for the clubs and for me. As a result I am not as happy.

Customers are not entitled to grope, disrespect, or rob strippers. This is their job, not their hobby, and they all need income. Clubs are not just some erotic show for guys to view while drinking.

NOTE: anything I post here, outside of a direct quote, is my opinion only, which I am entitled to. Take it for what you estimate it is worth.

Then that web site doesn't subscribe to W3C design standards and/or has DHTML or ActiveX requirements; these are usually corporate intranet sites and a few rare financial sites.

Firefox will permit you to run plug-ins, the most common of which are Flash and Shockwave, which you can download at Macromedia.
