    Default Flexibility

Hey everybody - I know there have been a myriad of posts about splits, but this is a little different.
I damaged myself many months ago and since then have not really... challenged myself in terms of dancing or exercise. As a result I am VERY tight - I am seriously hurting. I am not even remotely concerned with splits - I couldn't even ride a horse right now. I probably couldn't even ride a whippet right now. Not that anyone ought to be trying to ride whippets. I don't think their little backs could take it. But you get my point. Even a basic yoga routine is a little out of my league (did I mention that I was seriously hurting?) Do any of you bendy ladies know stretching techniques that work very fast? I am intensely worried about damaging myself again (because god only know what I would be able to ride if that happened), so nothing that involves anyone standing my hips please.

Wow...my first question to you is: What kind of hurt do you have? Joint? Tendon? Muscle? Combination?

There are plenty of things you can do to stretch those muscles out...but depending on what you hurt is going to change what to do for flexibility.

The most important thing you NEED to do before you start stretching out is increasing blood flow to the muscles (warm up the muscles) with a 5-10 minute medium intensity cardio routine. Then, you stretch ALL of your muscles. Even if your hamstrings are tight, you are giong to need to stretch out the calves as well since they are connected. Now...when you stretch, you stretch to the point where you NEED to stop...and then hold it for 10-20 seconds taking deep breaths the entire time. You relax and then go again...hold each stretch for 10-20 seconds. You'll be amazed at how quickly your muscles stretch. You need to do this 2-3 times per day...otherwise, you'll lose the flexibility at the end of each day. Take hot baths at night with salts (draws the lactic acids out of the muscles...which causes the soreness)...with drinking plenty of water and taking nice, long, controlled deep breaths.

Now, if there is JOINT soreness, you'll have to be very aware of how and when it hurts. Joints are something altogether different...and if you have inflammed joints, then you need to be much more careful with the stretching.

I hope that helps a little bit. Please feel free to PM me if you need anything else.
