    Default music/DJ question

Just wondering..how does the whole music situation work? Am I supposed to bring in all my own music to dance to every time or do I just give a list to the DJ and he takes care of it? So every time I work I have to have my music sets all planned out before coming in?

It varies from club to club, and even from DJ to DJ.

A warning--most DJs are total assholes--though the guys who post here are pretty cool.

They are theoretically supposed to play what you request, so long as it doesn't violate club music policy (sometimes very strict), or piss off and drive out the customers. This is why you are supposed to tip them. For various reasons it doesn't always work out this way. The DJs often get the "DJ is God" complex, and think they know what you need better than you do, or don't care, or are just virtually mentally retarded. The managers/owners may forbid anything but schlocky Top 40 and "upbeat, happy music" like was the case in the worst club I ever worked in.

Asking for hard-core rap when it's a bunch of older guys who love rock is not a good idea--not that I'm saying you're gonna try this, but lot's of dancers do!

Bringing in your own music is a great idea if the club allows it. This then means you can go ask him why he didn't play it, if he doesn't--and many won't!

But try to bring in music that the customers will like, and that won't get him in trouble for playing. Let him have some choice in the matter, don't be imperious, bossy, or rude when asking for it--this is why a lot of DJs trun into assholes.

And if you do get one of the rare ones who try to take care of you, and maximize your performance by playing music you dance well to--TIP HIM, and tip him well.

If you dance well, you will make a lot more money, unless you are working in some of the stripclub/whorehouses that are springing up in some areas of the country, where the stage show is a facade. Sadly, if you read some of the posts by the hardcore perverts, they openly scoff at stage shows, or what they call "air dances" (table dances with no physical contact). These guys only care about getting their dicks rubbed, or worse, so their lack of respect for beauty and eroticism can be expected.

But even in these clubs, a DJ on your side can help you make money, so be nice if he is nice to you.

Christ, Djoser, lighten up already. Most DJ's are NOT assholes, they are normal people. Some of them have egos, some of them are stressed out, but don't go into it negatively. I have always gotten along with EVERY DJ I've worked with and its been easily over 40 different guys.

If a DJ won't play what you want, chances are its club policy. Just ask when you go in to sign up and audition about the format. If you already work that night, just go with their music until you are there for a few days and see what the other girls dance to so you have an idea what will work for you.

In my experience, the rules are more lenient earlier in the week when less people are around, but that isn't always the case.

Just go in with a positive attitude, and the DJ should be the least of your hassles.

Ever been to Daytona or Detroit, Katrine?

If you like good DJs, stay away, lol. If I want to meet some good ones, maybe I'll find a bunch in Texas.

I have worked with 2-3 good ones, out of about 30-35. My girlfriend has worked with 2-3 out of about 30-40. She has been lucky to find any who play even close to what she really likes.

The reaction I have gotten from working with well over a thousand dancers, most of whom have worked all over the country at one time or another, has been an amazed appreciation for a guy who at least tries to play what they can dance their best to, and can pull it off more often than not.

But then I tend to be cynical about the business at times.

The DJs here on SW are cool, but I have heard so many other complaints from dancer members that I don't think a warning is out of line.

But I hope she gets lucky, as you have, or I'm wrong. If she does have to work with a jerk, she'll be ready. And if she gets a good one, she'll be ready.

Maybe we should do a poll, it would be hard to argue with the results of that...

Djoser, I am glad you said most DJs are assholes. In my club, there is one cool one whom the customers love. The regulars ask if *he* is working, as if the naked ladies don't matter. The god-complex DJs play Poison or anything else that would clear a room. One DJ, whom I must've pissed off, plays -- get this -- Counting Crow's "Accidentally in Love" for me. And it's followed by
    their "Yellow Taxi" remake.

How do I get the DJs to play non-crap? Must I give them head?

I worked in a club doing body-painting, in which one of the DJs actually asked the dancers to blow him, if they wanted to hear what they liked.

But that was probably the worst club I worked in, lol...

Fair enough ya'll. I am pretty easy to work with musically, I can dance to about anything as long as it isn't Rush, Celine Dion, or country, etc.........

I get in and out of the DJ booth quickly. Money is made from lapdancing, not stage dancing, at least everywhere I have ever worked. There is no point in stressing over the DJ when there is money to be made, its just the time you have to do in order to work in the club.

I do love it when DJ's play original and exciting music, but most customers could care less. Half the time they don't even know when a song begins or ends.

I DO have a problem with our Monday night DJ. He mumbles close to the mic so I can never here who he is calling up. Luckily, he is aware of this and remedies the situation by walking around the club and looking for the girls that might be coming up. Not the greatest solution but he will play ANYTHING I give him including bellydance music so I can't complain.

And lots of dancers I've known have had issues with DJ's I thought were just fine and did their job. Perhaps that is more common in this industry. As much as I love music, I could give a shit about it or the DJ at work as long as I'm making money......

Dancers like you are rare, from my experience, Katrine.

No doubt there would be more cool DJs if they could deal with more dancers like yourself. I think this business has a tendency to bring out the selfish streak in a lot of people, but then--as has been demonstrated here and elsewhere--I am cynical.

Most dancers need more attention to what they can dance well to, even if the customers don't care, as they so often don't. And a lot of them aren't as polite as they should be about it, haha.

Here's to more good karma, in dancers and DJs.

True, I would like to have more input with the DJ's sometimes, but I guess I've just gotten used to being able to immediately name a couple of good rock tunes immediately so that I can get the hell out of the booth and go to work......perhaps I've just become dissociated by now........

the music situation varies greatly from club to club, as Kat and Djoser have said. for the record, i shall post how i like to do it.

as far as "making a card" goes, this is all i ask: i want your stage name, where you feel like saying you're from, any magazines you've been in or titles you might have, and then...here's the rub. give me THREE genres. name me 10 artists, if you can. give me a few song examples. and i will go from there. this makes it easier to flow. if all you like is hip hop, or club, i doubt that. give me at least one other genre, you can do it, i know you can. help me to help you.

i'll say this now and get it out of the way so everyone who wants to flame me can do so...i am NOT a fan of girls bringing their own cd's in. and i shall list my reasons thusly:
    1. they look like someone has been eating egg and bacon sandwiches off of them for 2 years. when they skip, no one stares at you, it's all me. i hate that.
    2. there is no title, no track listing, just "play me # 2 & 5". i do not always have time to listen to tracks i may have never heard before. does it matter? yes, it does.
    3. this is the big one. with very few exceptions, rarely does a girl bring in a track i dont have that i would play. i would say MAYBE 20% of the time. i always try to listen to them, but i work at one of the big 30+ girls a night type of clubs. i will not just randomly play a track because you think it's good.(unless i know and trust you). i have been doing this for well over a decade and while i never try to be an asshole, i do have parameters to work within. will i stretch them? absolutely. just let me hear what i am working with first. seriously, i bring ...i dunno...20,000 songs with me to work, in various mediums. i'm pretty well-stocked and flexible. all i ask is that you be too. to be fair, some of my fave tunes for work have been brought in by girls....however, as i said, that's crazy rare. usually the girl hands me a cd and i listen to it, and the main reason she brought this cd is because, well, quite frankly, no sane DJ would have it in his collection. it's always either slow boring "ooooooooooooooooooooh giiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiirl" r&b or metal so heavy it makes ME cringe. i think many dancers dont understand the difference between what is good in your car and what is good onstage in front of 300 people.

    blah.

i suppose to stay on topic i would say this...make a list of stuff you like. make a cd of your favorite songs. give the dj a chance, if he plays you crap....hand him your cd. and i have to agree with Katrine. most girls who make a big deal out of "oh i can only dance to these 2 songs" arent focused on the money anyway. good luck.

I meant to mention these two problems, but got bogged down in other sh*t--but this is so true! Skipping CDs are always blamed on the DJ, whether it's the sexiest dancer or the coolest customer that brought it to the booth. It can be the best song for stripping ever, but if it skips, we can't play it, period.

After being burned repeatedly, I make it a point to almost always listen to whatever I am being requested to play, to make sure the customers won't hate it, and I won't get screamed at by the manager. You just can't blame the girl, that makes you look so lame, and lazy, and with good reason. But it also means that the more songs that are being brought in that you haven't checked, the more work you have to do.

All things considered, if it were me, I'd still want to bring in my own music, so long as it was done with consideration for the DJ.

This is very true as well. The mark of a really professional dancer is her flexibility. I will still strive to the utmost of my ability, given constraints of time and stress, to find the perfect song for the perfect dancer at the perfect moment--but if there are only two songs to choose from, it ain't gonna happen...

Oh, and Katrine--one big factor in our varied experience of DJ quality may be location. Austin is probably the coolest town I have ever spent any time in, and I've been all over the country. It's too bad I didn't DJ there instead of where I have. By way of contrast, Daytona Beach, and to a large extent Detroit, are not exactly 'class' cities. No offense to anyone from those from either city, but the A.Q. (Asshole Quotient) is very high.

Another question...can I bring in my own song or request what I want for me to dance to at amateur night?

bring it in, sure. request it first to see if the guy has it. and make sure it's something the club format will allow to be played. other than that you should be dandy.
