Car trouble...for anyone who can help

Ok, so my wonderful POS car decided that it didn't want me to have airconditioning anymore and broke. Well, my grandfather decided that he could fix it, and decided to start playing with the fuses, etc. While he was tinkering with everything, he disconnected the battery with the car still running and now the thing is completely shutdown. He reconnected the battery, but the car won't turn on or anything. Does anyone know what is wrong and what I can do to fix it???? Thanks for any help...

Disconnecting the battery while running will not cause any harm, there has to be another issue going on, he must have hit something, disconnected something else, a short in a line, etc. More information and I'll continue to help as I'm able...

    Oh geeze... VW... figures.

VW has a security feature many times that will actually cause something like this to happen. It's to prevent the car from being stolen. I believe you can contact a VW dealership and they will give you a sequence to disable that feature. I'm not 100% sure, but that type of thing is what I've dealt with in the past with VW's.

ok, just called volkswagen...they said that the security feature doesn't turn on when you mess with the battery, and so it has to be something else...

Okay... does your dome light at least turn on when you open the door? Auto locks (if you have them) still work? i.e. is the car getting ANY power just sitting there?

If you put the key in the ignition and turn it but not start it... does any of your gauges show power?

check all the fuses....especially if he was messing with them.

Make sure the battery is really hooked up right.

If it still isnt working....leave the battery disconnected for an hour....this will reset the computer....then reconnect it and try again.

After that...it could be almost anything.

Does any of the electronics(lights) work? if some of them work and the car just doesnt start then its not the battery....its something else he muct have messed with or shorted.

    Check the fuses.

If you do not have power when you try to turn on the lights, then make sure the positive and negative cables are connected to the right posts.

If it won't turn over at all, then it's not the spark plugs. And if the car won't turn over at all, I seriously doubt it could possibly have anything to do with fuses.

....and I'm sure you know this, but don't let grandfathers play with any car made after 1975

the car has absolutely NO power, the automatic locks don't work, the interior lights don't work, the clicker doesn't work, and when you put the key in the ignotion, nothing happens...

i will have him check the fuses right now, and try the battery thing, thanks...

no, I told him to try that, but he said he didn't think it was a good idea and was scared of messing the car up even more(if that's possible)

Assuming the battery had power before, something would have to either be disconnected or something would have had to happen to fry everything. I would look at a couple fuses to see if they look fried. As for jumping it - at this point, why not? He could have accidentally created a short...which could fry the battery. If you jump it, and the battery cannot hold a charge, then it's the battery. If you can't jump it, it could be that something was crossed and all the computer chips got fried....but that still wouldn't explain why it wouldn't even try to turn over.

Have you tried jumping on one foot?

There is usually a big f'in fuse between the battery and the rest of the electrical system. It'll be like 90 amps or something crazy like that. It is usually in it's own housing outside of the "usual" fuse boxes.

When he pulled the battery while the car was running, the generator/alternator didn't have anything drawing current from it which meant the amps on the system went way up and likely that fuse burned out to protect everything.

The battery also could have been destroyed.

Ask for a jump - and put the wires on properly - not that nonsense of + to + and - to -. It should be + to + and - to a post on the engine. The guide book will have this information in it. (That way the circuit completes on the spark plugs, not on the battery.

If the car has power and starts up - then the battery is shot.

If not, then look for that big ass fuse. And yes, that sucker is gonna cost some money.

Interesting info on the big f'n fuse - sounds feasible.

The reason for putting the - cable to a ground - that's to avoid the release of hydrogen that takes place when you connect both cables to + and - (instead of a ground)....because, of course, if there is a spark, then you can have a little explosion....not typically large, but it can result in sulfuric acid on the face which really sucks. But it is also not real likely...but much like using a cell phone while pumping gas...not a great idear.

My second car was a 2000 beetle, black, sunroof, heated seats.. too bad the piece of shit needed a boost every day in the winter! I spent $20 a day on calling cabbies to give me boosts, couldn't even make it to get a new battery.. Then I took it to the VW dealership and they diagnosed all sorts of crap... $3000-$4000 worth of work.. I didn't do it, and traded the car for something better, but got only about %60 of it's crappy value.. Never again!

By the way, the battery was tested a few times and so was the alternator, and both were "perfect", like no problems showing.. Maybe it's a common thing for this make and model?
