    Default NHL kiss my ass!!!!!!

    Good!!!!!

It aint an American game anyways!

Yea,we may dominate in the arena.

    But this AINT a sport!!!!!!!!!

Its a fight, and every once in awhile,a hockey game breaks out!!!!!

    Fuck the owners.
Fuck the players(cept the American ones of course)
    Fuck the "fans"!!!!!!!!

Watch WWF like the rest of us,or the NFL like the true sporting among us,but im afraid this farse of a sport is gone for this year.

    I say,good riddence!!!!

Hockey aint a sport, and no event a kid should be watching.

    Get rules.
get refs that control the game.
or die out behind basketball and the NBA.(how sad is that)

Even soccer is better then this chit they call sport, and GIRLS play soccer!!!!

Oh, good. Sanctimony and moral hierarchy for games.

Baseball and football both survived strikes and/or lockouts. Hockey (certainly a sport, and tougher to play than either of the other two) will rebound. There's a market for hockey, and the market, like space, abhors a vacuum.

yes, there is also a market for the WWF.
    What does that tell you??
And they hold the record for attendence.

    sad huh.

I have big issues with the NHL.

Its not a sport if you cant take a child to it and teach some sort of "sportsmanship".

Most times you have to shield your child from most of the game.

I hope the NHL never recovers from this strike(im sure they will)
When they fail, take it from collage and high schools next!!!!

This could/should be the death of the "sport"we know as hockey.

Sport 1 a : a source of diversion : RECREATION ... physical activity engaged in for pleasure ... a particular activity (as an athletic game) so engaged in

Yeah, it's a sport, and unlike the WWF, it's not staged or scripted. My kids have watched hockey games and wanted to play in them, except that their ice skating sucked. It's no better or worse than football or rugby or lacrosse (if you want a "true" American game, that would be lacrosse), and it certainly takes more talent and energy per position than football. In 2001, a couple million screaming Coloradans sure thought it was a sport. Little leagues, high school leagues, college leagues, minor leagues, recreational leagues all think it's a sport.

Greed at the major league levels, for players and owners, is a constant for any sport.

Which is why I detest all spectator sports, especially ones hyped by the media.

Bring back chariot racing, I say!

It's really funny to read about the huge riots between the Blues and the Greens, during the Roman and Byzantine Empires.

Personally, I'd much rather hit the bag for a few rounds anyday, than watch a bunch of arrogant, overpaid assholes hit, bounce, throw, or do anything else with their stupid balls...

    Except for the fact...
When you go to a NFL game,or watch it on TV,you dont expect to see a fight.Yes they happen, but its not part of the game.
People go to see the NHL and are disapointed if there is no fight.

I really have no more issue with the NHL than I do with the other professional sports leagues. I have issues with spoiled brat athletes in general. It just seems anyomre that even the marginally talented amongst them are making annually what most people doing far more meaningful work will need to work their entire lives to see. My God, the bonuses paid to players on the losing Super Bowl team outweigh some peoples annual income. I can see why NASCAR has gotten so popluar. It seems to be the only sport where the participants have to go our and earn their paycheck every week.

I have no sympathy for the owners either who helped create these labor dispute situations by running their teams like expensive toys instead of serious businesses and signing players to ridiculous salaries that they know they couldn't afford. Frankly, I think our society has its priorities out of order when we pay someone $20 million to swing a bat at a ball, esspecially at a time when we have soldiers overseas making 1/1000th of that for the priveledge of getting shot at.

Free market enterprise I'm sure. But its also free market enterprise for me not to buy their tickets, or their merchandising, or watch their games on television.

For those in need of sports fix, I'd like to point our that there are plenty of minor league/alternative sports leagues out there (hockey included) with talented athletes who are making bologna sandwich money for their efforts who will gladly accept your patronage. I personally recommend checking out an arena football game if you ever have the time.

Okay, I don't know much about the workings of sporty things, but I watched "The Replacements" and it pissed me off. But, feel free to correct any misunderstandings I have here. Why is it so bad for the players to want a decent portion of the money that they earn for the franchise? I mean, there is A LOT of money in football, hockey, etc. Why do you think that it should be the owners and managers getting rich and not the actual players?

Like I said "The Replacements" really pissed me off. Essentially it is romanticizing anti-union absurdity - I mean, you may be anti-union, but arguing that being a scab is a life affirming decision, especially when they all go out and hurt and damage themselves, some permanently for NO OTHER REASON than the owner wants to keep his money. They barely get paid, and they're scabs! They don't get professional sports jobs after that! Do I take movies too seriously?

Professional athlethes should have the right to attain whatever pay they feel they can achieve through collective bargaining like anyone else. If an owner thinks that the market will bear paying someone $10 million a year to play shortstop, then so be it. If the networks want to pay billion dollars sums for the TV rights to these leagues, that's their choice. If fans want to pay inflated ticket prices to see said athletes perform, fine by my book, but I won't be one of them.

My rant really has nothing to do with player salaries, as it does with major league professional athletes getting way more in "exchange value" for what they do than what their "use value" to society is, and not even being thankful for that.

Professional athletes are essentially nothing more than entertainers. If some great catastrophe were to befall mankind, I could see great use value in the world for doctors, nurses, police, paramedics, firemen, military, manual laborers, service workers etc. but professional athletes? uh no. Not even close.

About the only use value athletes provide their spectators is occasional inspiration, and folks can get a lot more of that from watching youth play at the local ballfield, gym, or ice arena, who are willing to do it for free no less.

    The same to you.

Someone's been listening to too much sports talk radio; BG's post sounds just like the rant of every half-baked redneck host I heard in the bowels of the country. I would like to send Scott Niedermeyer down to pay them all a visit.

There's no fighting in U.S. college hockey, the European leagues, women's hockey---oh, wait, BG, if women play it, it isn't a sport, huh? Niiice.

I love hockey. It's an incredibly exciting game to see live. And overall, it is a far less violent game than football; look at a retired defensive back, then at a retired defenseman and tell me who's in better shape. Educated hockey fans don't go for the fights; the most telling point is that they are nearly nonexistent in the playoffs when the stakes are highest.

I'm not worried that it will die out because of the problems of one league. It's a huge international game and with the multitudes of minor leagues in the U.S., there will always be good teams to watch.

Of course, I don't expect people who consider watching a bunch of cars make left turns for hours on end a sport to ever appreciate hockey. Besides, it isn't like any hockey talent comes from there. It's as rare a commodity as a forked family tree.

This is definitely true - one of life's ironies. I read an onion article once, talking about how paparazzi were stalking various American scientists. The paparazzi were saying that people were crazy if they ever thought Americans would lose interest in the lives of the people that control and influence so much of our society. You had these Harvard professors talking about how they accepted that photography was part of their chosen field, but they drew the line at their family. Again - the entire "system" isn't based on what is the most important element of society - it's based on how much it can get, how much it needs particular "talent" etc. And in this case (although I realize that you are opting out) if the owners thought they could make the same money using "cheap" players, I'm thinking they probably would. So, while I appreciate your point, I don't think "gratitude" is really what is called for.

It's all about greed though, unmitigated greed on both sides. The only reason the ever escalating salaries in Major League Baseball are tolerated is that there is a huge fan base to support them. Because the two sides couldn't get together everyone loses. I don't feel bad for the players or the owners, I feel bad for the vendors, valets, support staff, etc that get screwed over because of other's greed.

Hockey will never be the same, that's for certain. I like staying out of debates about stuff like this because I have nothing positive to say about Hockey right now.. I'm quite pissed and quite amazed at how greedy they are.
