Default The Internet and Black History

Since this is Black History Month, a little known black discovery is the reason we are all communicating on SW.

In 1975 a black man discovered and developed the technology known as the Superinformation Highway or Internet.

Since only sketchy black history, if any is taught in a widespread manner in school, I thought this bit of info was something worthy of being shared.

Everytime we go on line, black history goes into effect.

Then they changed it to the "Information superhighway" just so they wouldn't have to give him credit. Eventually even burying that term.

And, Al Gore took credit for that.

    Just another damn conspiracy.
"He will come in one of the pre-chosen forms. During the rectification of the Vuldrini, the traveler came as a large and moving Torg! Then, during the third reconciliation of the last of the McKetrick supplicants, they chose a new form for him: that of a giant Slor! Many Shuvs and Zuuls knew what it was to be roasted in the depths of the Slor that day, I can tell you!"

And that would be whom, exactly?

Cerf and Kahn, creators of the TCP/IP protocol, are both white. Tim Berners-Lee is white, as were the main scientists on the ARAPNET precursor project.

Care to enlighten us with the specific name and technology?

    Maybe you mean Philip Emeagwali?

More of a supercomputer guy actually, but he's done some cool stuff with hyper-parallelization and stuff like that. I think he's big with research systems and the like for oil exploration and code-breaking machines.

Who is it? All the pictures I have seen have nerdy hippie looking white guys in them.

Also, don't forget a black woman pioneered "exotic dancing"-- Josephine Baker. She was amazing, and what she did was truly an art.

"In 1968, Bolt Beranek and Newman (BBN) was awarded the contract to develop the packet switches called Interface Message Processors (IMPs). The first IMP was installed at UCLA in 1969, thus becoming the first node on the ARPANET. Three other nodes were added later that year: the Stanford Research Institute, the University of California Santa Barbara, and the University of Utah. By the end of 1969, four nodes were connected to the ARPANET, and the fledgling Internet was off and running. "

There isn't any one person that can be credited with "starting" the Internet. I have no doubt that some people were white...some black...some Chinese...there have been a lot.

That aside, while Al Gore's comment is fun to poke fun at, there is some truth behind what he said. Gore pushed through a lot of funding that was used to help build the Internet to the level it exists at today.

"According to Vincent Cerf, a senior vice president with MCI Worldcom who's been called the Father of the Internet, "The Internet would not be where it is in the United States without the strong support given to it and related research areas by the Vice President in his current role and in his earlier role as Senator."
