under the "green party" group -

Basically, it describes a national leader, taking over a country right after a major terrorist attack in uncertain economic times. The leader declared "Homeland Security" was vitally important, generated HUGE nationalist frevor, got a "Patriot act" passed by his legislature, began to take measures to increase security at the expense of personal liberty (including jailing suspects indefinitely without trial or evidence), and many of the issues we see in newspapers today. Media outlets were singing the song - their super-huge corporate parents ran just about everything in sight, and big companies were given carte blance. The leader declared war on suspected terrorist cells, attacked countries with suspected "Weapons of Mass Destruction" (later determined to be false), and too issue with the UN equivalent of the time, pulling out of treaties and agreements as suited the leader's belief of homeland security. Federal money was spent on "Faith based social initiatives" and the leader believed God was on His side.

Can you name the 2 leaders this description points to?

So far, the award goes to Celeste!

I agree that most of the others had terrorism on their soil (though in most cases the terrorism was by a defined foreign power and not a "terrorist group", I don't think Washington or Lincoln (or many of the others) began attacking other countries, using "weapons of mass destruction" as the reason, and I don't remember a US Homeland Security department before 2001.

By the way, for those that read the article, do the similartities between 1930s/1940s and today scare you at all?

:::rolls a few green MnM's across the forum to ya:::

Its just an opinion of mine i guess i didnt explain to well.

I think the pres of the US is looked at like no other countries leader by the world.

Someone could compare anyone to Hitler, even Paul martin.
Just the comparison is an insult to Bush and his supporters(The Majority of Americans)
I would think Saddam fit the comparison a little closer.

True, which makes it even more scary that we are "selling" democracy and removing protection for individual liberty and dissent at home

He, like most people, stand for many good things. It's the things he stands against, and the one-sided approach his (the party's, the administration's) machine has to things (squashing dissent, etc) that scare me.

I also wonder why, unlike the best presidents we've had who walked among their dissenters, modern politicians need to create "dissent areas" far from the speech areas, not involving the opposing view in planning new projects (such as Cheney's energy bill) and personally attacking their opposition as unpatriotic, instead of countering facts with facts and letting the truth come out.

Also, if I recall, Stalin was elected by 100% of the people in USSR - also (Like Iraq) under miliarty-reinforced elections. Not saying we forced or influenced the elections, but saying it was a "free" election where both sides were holding and using weapons there certainly wasn't complete comfort for all people to speak their mind.

Much of the meaning of these terms depends on perspective. The states of the South succeeding considered themselves a foreign power--in fact declared themselves a foreign country called the Confederate States of America. As for weapons of mass destruction, a cannon is a weapon of mass destruction compared to a musket. A cannon could kill more than 10-15 times as many people with one shot as a musket could. The attack on Fort Sumner could be viewed as an attack on the US using weapons of mass destruction by a foreign country, or terrorists since the Fort had mostly symbolic value to the US. Since the CSA had an ally in Great Britain you can compound this into an international "conspiracy".

As for Monroe, the US had just been invaded by the British which had just burned down the White House under Monroe. Since the White House has no military status or value its burning could be called terrorism.

When JFK became President, Puerto Rican separatist had just attacked Congress from the gallery in 1954 (wounding 5 Congresmen) and Cuba had turned Communist under Castro. The US attacked Cuba by aiding rebels at the Bay of Pigs,==again depending on perspective. Foreign policy was the major issue in the 1960 campaign.

interesting point, but usually (at least today) "terrorists" are those not associated with any formal government or national power.
