    Vegetarians Unite

Is anyone here a vegetarian/pescatarian/vegan/ovo-lacto/ovo/lacto vegetarian? (Yeah, I think that covers all of it...)

I became a vegetarian a few months ago when part of me realized the only way for me to lose weight (because I LOVE food ) was to cut something out of my diet, among other reasons. It was tough in the beginning, but now I have an indifference at best to meat. It's great--I've cut down my salt and fat intake, and I feel better than before. I live with my family, so my mom, a South Beach Diet kind of woman, is always pressuring me to eat more protein to make up for the protein lost, but I heard somewhere else that this wasn't as important as previously thought. Has anyone else heard anything about protein importance?

It depends on your goals.... generally you can get plenty of protein on a vegetarian diet.

I'm a vegetarian, borderline vegan, and if anything I get too much protein in my diet! I've been a veg since 6th grade and am a much happier, more fulfilled person because of it.

Yeah, you get enough protein breathing, practically. South Beach Diet, Zone diet etc., are diets that have excessive protein, which is why you lose weight. The only vitamins you MIGHT have a problem with are B12 (of which you need about 1 microgram a day) and iron - which in plentiful in leafy greens that a lot of people just don't like - a molassas. A tablespoon of molasses every day and you will be very ironny.

Lol! Ironny. An important thing for vegetarians. Not to be confused with irony.

I don't do meat. I used to stay with turkey, but stopped that too. I don't do milk, but will have an egg once in a while. It is a life style change that's for sure.

Can't say i will go Vegetarian all the way..... It's hard.

I have been a vegetarian for 7 or 8 years--even while doing the Curves low-carb diet. I also trained for a half-marathon, became preganat and delivered a healthy baby, and nursed for well over a year. It just takes some planning, that's all. If you do not eat any portein, you can make yourself very very sick (as I did in the first months) but you can get lots of protein from soy porducts (tofu, garden burgers) wheat products (tempeh) nuts, beans, dairy products, substitute dairy porducts ( like soy cheese) and eggs. Go for the Omega-3 enriched eggs if you eat them, and take a vitamin suppliment. If you are trying to get Iron form any vegetabel source, always include a vitamin C source in the same meal--Calciom enriched OJ woudl be one good choice. I make a lot of dishes that involve beans and tomatoes for the same reason.

You can make almost any dish in a regular cookbook by substituting a non-meat protein. You can buy fake burgers, fake ground beef, fake chicken breasts and patties and nuggets, fake hotdogs and corn dogs, etc. If you want more cooking tips or recepies, you can PM me.

Never let anybody tell you you have to eat meat. Besides the animal rights issues, it is hard to digest and and full of saturated fat, salt, and might have worms (in pork) salominella (in poultry) mad cow disease (beef) and unless you get the free-range, organically fed, ultra-expensive type of meat, a bunch of stress hormones, natural and synthetic growth hormones, antibiotics, livestock medecines, and God knows what else. I have been entirely healthy and energetic ever since I learned how to take care of myself on a vegetarian diet.

oh, the Schneider's chicken - very chicken-y. They really master chicken-texture - you can pull it apart and everything. And you can eat it naked - the stuff I had before absolutely required that you drench it in gravy to eat it.

I meant that the chicken was naked, not you.

I'm classed as some type of vegetarian. I do not eat red meat (now cows or pigs), will only eat chicken once in a while (maybe once a month... maybe once every 3 months... for many years previous I never ate any chicken), my milk consumption has been reduced drastically (I don't do milkshakes anymore and mainly only consume milk if it is part of the food I'm cooking like a Frittata)..

On top of that.. I strive to minimise my "exposure" to white flour, sugar (except naturally occuring sugars as found in fruits and so forth) and any "junk" food.

For instance, I will now have sorbet instead of ice-cream. I use rice/corn cakes instead of bread.

Tho' I will never be able to be vegan - I looooooove my cheese too much. I also will never "do without" egg as too many of my favourite receipies (such as my current fave: frittata) require eggs.

I suppliment my diet with V8 vegie juice and my Goji Juice. I don't seem to have too many problems with my diet as it is right now.

You'd probably do better being a vegetarian, I think people sometimes don't understand the real meaning behind veganism.

I've been a vegan all of my life which means that I don't eat meat, I don't use products with animal content (wear fur, leather, use non-vegan shampoos, or tooth paste.) It's quite the adventure for me to go shopping for these reasons.
I mostly stick to vegetables (which I hate, go figure).

Vegetarian means to strictly not eat meat, or eat dairy products.

Can you give up wearing animals of any kind, or using animal products? If not, I'd look into being a vegetarian instead.

YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am so excited to have some other veggie friends here. I haven't eaten red meant since I was 12 and I am 26 now. I stopped the chicken about 5 years ago and am toying with the vegan side of things. I love it but than again it is hard to imagine eating meat so i really don't know what i am missing per se. Do you guys find that people get pissed at you because you choose not to eat meat?? I never understand why they get so upset. I try not to buy leather and will NEVER EVER buy fur. There is just something so sad about killing a living breathing animal to put around my neck..keep up the good guys!!!

BUT... I wont wear fur, and try not to use products that are tested on animals....

Yes! How many times have you had this conversation:
    "So you don't eat meat?"
    "no"
    "Chicken?"
    "no"
    "Fish?"
    "No."
    "What's your belt made of?"
    "Canvas"
    "Do you drink milk?"
    "No"
    "Do you eat eggs?"
    "No"
    "Honey?"
    "No"
    Do you wear silk?"
    "Yes"
    "Hmm. Hypocrite."

What's really funny is how we're meant to be the "angry" ones who attack people for not sharing our beliefs - I find people are a little defensive about eating meat whether or not you've said a word. I'm always like "Dude - it's your karma."

Lol! All except the honey part. The people are usually to naive to realize honey is an animal product.

And regarding the fur comments.... if the people who wear fur (cough- JLO-cough) would watch the videos of how their precious coats were made...

OMG I know...everytime i see her i get pissed. I remember once that ben affleck bought her like 100,000 dollar chinchilla coat and peta found out and sent him a video of how they are tortured etc. and he vowed never to buy fur again. Who knows if he was lying or not. But it seems like it is a stature thing. Like if you are filthy rich you have to prove it to everyone and go buy a fur.....anyways..........you guys have a great day!!

Yeah, I used to get that a lot. I always have hated questions such as:

How do you not like meat?
I could never do that, How could you?
So all you eat are vegetables?
What did meat ever do to you?

I still scratch my head at the "What has meat ever done to you?" question.

People used to tell me, if you don't eat meat, you won;t ahve any energy. Well, I can't remember a time wehn I did not have 2 jobs, or else work and go to school at the same time. I used to just say, " how coudl I do what I do if I didn't ahve any energy? "

My son, now alomst 4 has NEVER eaten meat (except for the occasional McNugget his dad sneeks him) and he has more energy that any 10 people I know!

I am a strict ethical vegan and have been for about 7 years now. I was vegetarian for 5 years before that. It has been so long since I have eaten animal products, worn leather, silk, wool etc or used products tested on animals that I can not imagine it any other way.

Same as Madigan: Vegan for seven years, vegetarian for five years before that. Primarily for ethical reasons.

I'm constantly asked if I "cheat" or if I really miss certain foods. Uh, no. If I wanted to eat animals or animal products I'd eat them and not be vegan or vegetarian. The idea of eating any animal products makes me nauseated.

The biggest problem I've had being veg has not been learning what I can and can not eat, finding something good to eat in restaurants, or "avoiding temptation" *eye roll*, but that I find it very very difficult to date anyone who isn't vegan. It's hard to look past a romantic partner indulging in an activity I find ethically abhorrent and physically disgusting. Kinda puts a damper on the mood.

I have not eaten meat in almost ten years. People are always trying to start arguments with me about it.What pleasure it gives to then I have no idea.
But every time I go out to eat it's a given that I will hear ''you don't want any meat!''

    It is just not healthy.
I personaly HATE the taste of meat. I find it flavorless.Always have, always will.
I just don't like it. Even if I did not care about animals I would not eat it.

Cow's are fed the remains of other diseased cow's while never seeing the light of day untill there ride to the slaughter house.
They are pumped full of hormones and antibiotics.
Meat for the most part is extreamly hard to digest (It can sit in a man's colon for up to 30 years!Women tend to digest it easier with all the estrogen in thier body.) and accounts for many heath problmes such as colon and other cancers, obesity, appendicitis, osteoporosis, arthritis, diabetes, and food poisoning.
Plus, meat contains accumulations of pesticides and other chemicals up to 14 times more concentrated than those found in plant foods.

Of couse I try not to preach vegatarianism because I hate arguing with people about it.
You know hearing questions like''well, if we are not supposed to eat meat then why do we have canine teeth?''

Or the ever so popular ''god put animals here to be eaten''.

Luckily, with all the education on the dangers of eating meat and the cruelity involved more and more people are becoming vegatarians or at the very least UNDERSTANDING why others chose to live a meat free lifestyle.

Well, I most certainly am not a vegan/vegetarian/etc.... I do eat meat, I do wear and love leather. furs, and silk. I couldn't live (happy) w/o my eggs, milk and honey.

But I commend everyone here for sticking to their principles and beliefs.

I am not one of those a**holes who will belittle you for your decision. I hate people who are like that.

No, I was not scared at all. I nursed him for over a year, and started him on solid veggies and fruits and cereals at about 4 or 5 months. He always liked cheese and milk, so I gave him lots of those. ANd yogurt. He does not really like meat. He seems to like the soy nuggets better than the McDonad's version, and alsp perfers fries to chicken McNuggets. Occasionally when we eat out ot at a freind's house, my husband will try to offer him meat, but he jsut squinches his mouth tight shut and turns his head away.

I do buy cheese and some other things at the local butcher shop. My son was looking at the meat in the case one day and asked me what it was. I told him "meat" and he asked what that meant. I responded, "It is bone and muscle from dead animals. Lots of people choose to eat it. " He gave me this LOOK--like, you have to be kidding, Mom.

I did not eat meat while pregnant, either. Just my usual stuff--lots of high-protein meat substitutes, dairy, fruits, veggies, and my daily trip to Taco Bell, where they will attempt to amke any dish without meat if you ask!

That reminds me of a time when I was around 5 or so.My mom took me to the Mcdonalds drive-thru and I asked her ''Are the hamburgers made out of cows like ours(I lived on a farm for a few years) and she told me no they are not made of cows''.
So even at a very young age I was questioning eating meat.
I just don't believe it is right for my body. I have a very sensitive stomach and meat aggravated that.
Dairy still bothers me but I can't give up sweets.
