    Default Sleeping Pills

Does anyone else here have to take sleeping pills on the nights they are off?

If not sleeping pills, what do you do to get in the "sleepy" mood?

If you do take something, what is it?

Lately, I find myself taking Tylenol's Simply Sleep just to get tired. My inner clock is so messed up. If I don't take them , I am up until at least 2:30-3:00 in the morning which is my usual sleep time.

I hear ya Vaden. I am often up untill 6 am. If I have anything to do the next day like an appointment or something and I have to get up early, or if something is bothering me it takes me hours to fall asleep .I spend most of my time tossing and turning and worrying about how I can't sleep. Which just makes me more and more anxious.

I used to take ambien but i don't recommend it because after being on it for a year i had nightmares and could not sleep AT ALL without it.
It is supposed to be used more to get your sleep schedule back on track and not as a permanent thing.

Then when I went off the ambien i tried tylonol pm.Which worked great for awhile.Untill, I had to increase the dose to fall asleep and I started Hallucinating. Now, I can't touch that stuff without feeling like im on an acid trip gone wrong.

What's working for me now is Valerian Root. It is kind of like natures valium lol. I take 2-4 pills about 2 hours before bedtime and it really seem's to be helping.
It is very mild and does not make me feel groggy in the morning.
I suggest giving it a try.
You can get it at any vitaman store and even at wal-mart.

Also, you can try drinking chamomille or the ''sleepytime'' tea. I often do this because I find that just sipping the hot tea calms me.

Hope you find something that works

Also, I sometimes take a benadryl to make me drowsy. Just don't take more than two or it can make you feel hyper not tired.

Melatonin works for me. It's the chemical in your body that tells your brain it's time to sleep. People who travel overseas use it all the time to regulate their internal clock. I take 300 mcg a night. I've been taking it for years and no side effects. Just twenty or thirty minutes after you take it, you're ready to fall asleep. It doesn't make you groggy and and it doesn't keep you asleep. If you have to get up to let the dog out or get the kids some water, you can. It only signals the brain that it's time to shut down. You can get it anywhere. Wal-Mart, Target, GNC, etc.

I knew I was forgetting something.
YES! Melatonin is great. I sometimes take a 3mg pill. But it does make me have VERY vivid dreams.I have never had such detailed dreams before. It's crazy. I have a book on the benefits of melotonin somewhere and it say's that melatonin is also good to combat aging and wrinkles as well as depression.
According to my book there are many positive benefits that come from regularly taking melotonin.

When I'm not sparring with insomnia, I go in levels. My body gets really used to pills really quick so I either have to up the dosages or change pills. I can start off with Melatonin, then perhaps Valerian. After that it's Unisom time, and after that, if I dont have any sort of prescription pills that help, I'd take maybe a Valerian and a Unisom together.

I went to a neurologist recently due to insomnia. He wants me to do a 'sleep study'. But
they start at 9PM... I'm not used to getting to sleep until 6AM! In the meantime, he
has prescribed me a sleeping pill (don't remember the name off hand).. it's only 15 mg, but
seems too strong... once I do get to sleep, I'll sleep a long time... and I've got to get up by
3 PM or so to start getting ready to leave for work to be there by the 9PM shift. So I need
caffeine, etc. to get me back awake. Dancing has messed up my sleep!

Just be careful of the valium! I am in my third week of withdrawing from it...and I had been using it for over four years rather regularly and ambien for about 2 1/2. I don't wish this on anyone! I ended up in ER about four weeks ago because it all caught up with me. I was at the gym and out of nowhere I had this panic attack. I mean the gym is somewhere that I used to get focused and relaxed and challanged.

It turns out I was fine but after talking to a doc, I realized what dangerous things I was doing to myself. I was told that you should never go cold turkey off of valium or xanax. Your heart could go, you could have convulsions...all kinds of stuff.

Now I am in a program with my doctor and he is getting me off of it gradually.

Please be careful on mixing those sleeping aids. It could be harmful and really expensive

    Cheers,

    Corri

Yes I am also up till at least 3:00am every night. And it takes me a while to unwind when I get home. I just turn on the TV for awhile and eventually I fall asleep...

if you are only having mild to moderate insomina then a short acting hyponotic like Ambien, Restorl or whatever else is good. But like most hyponotics if used more than you really should there is a high chance of physical addiction. Alot of detox centers actually use methodone treatment to help people who are physical addicted to hyponotics. Like Corey said people who have used/abused these types of drugs for months and years should not go off of them cold turkey.

OK..I just checked my Rx.. The neurologist put me on Remeron (Mirtazapine)... anyone
been on that? I've got the low dosage, but it may be too strong for me. I forgot to take it
when I got back home this morning, so I was awake all day. So that would mean two days
of work with no sleep in between. My work schedule is interfering with my need for sleep and vice-versa.

well i'm guessing that you are taking it for depression, which is one of the drugs major indications. It has a half live of 20-40 hrs. If you miss a dose I think you should take it as soon as you remember, but I would contact your physician who prescribed it and ask what to do with missed doses.

Ambien is great if you are an insomniac. You really get no sleep hangover like other things give you.

I *try* to keep a mostly regular sleep schedule (not varying more than an hour). Even on my days off I make myself stay up to as close to when I normally sleep as possible. Once you get into a normal-ish bedtime, having a day here and there when you need to get up early isn't so awful. Also, don't drink alcohol or eat at least 3 hours before you bedtime. You will wake up in the middle of your sleep from processing the stuff. Remember too that caffeine has like an 8 hour half-life (or whatever it is called) in your body so that can really mess with you if you drink it at night.

The other thing I can recommend is "Calms Forte" from a commpany called Hyland. It is a homeopathic sleeping pill that can usually be found at Whole Foods type places.
