Default Breaking the ice? Any advice?

I've been dancing for all of 2 days, so please forgive my naivete.

Here's my dilemma--I don't know how to get a conversation started with a customer. Somehow, I end up telling them about my previous career (attorney) and then they're very interested in talking. Then we get all caught up in the conversation and I have a tough time transitioning into asking to dance for them.

What do you do to break the ice? I'd love to know how to do this without bringing up my life (I was tired of living it, so talking about it is ridiculous), or offending them (they don't seem to like to be asked what they do for a living).

    Thank you for your help!

If you don't want to talk about your past job then don't. If you bring it up though it might be hard to stay off of the topic. Make up a pretend job, or tell them what you've been doing in your life besides work. But make sure it isn't anything that allows too many questions to be asked.

I personally am very shy so I'm no good at breaking the ice. If someone shows interest in me while I'm on stage than I see if they'd like me to come see them when I get off stage. Or when I get off stage I make a round to thank the nicer guys for tipping me. Typically someone will ask you if you want to sit and chat. I like doing this because if someone doesn't want me around then i'm not intruding. But if they do then they'll have a chance to tell me.

    Hope this helps!

Do a search in the newbie forum, there's lots of advice about conversation starters.

Most people like to talk about themselves. The best conversation starters are open-ended questions; How often do you come in?; Where are you from?; What type of business are you in?; Do you think the ___ (pick a team) will make the playoffs this year?. However, there are some guys to like to hear about your life. For those types, you might try something like, "I used to be a lawyer, but this is so much more fun, I'm a very sensuous person, and I just love letting that part of me out. If the next song is a good one, how about I show you that part of me during a lap dance?"

There are two reasons guys might not like talking about their jobs. First, some guys think that when you ask them what they do for a living, that you are sizing them up to determine how much money you can get out of them. Second, some guys say that they go to the club to forget about work. However, there's lots of guys that are very proud of what they do for a living and like to talk about it. What I do is ask a very general question like, "so, what type of business are you in?". If he gives me a very vague answer, I move on to another subject. If he gives me a very specific answer, I may be on to a subject he likes talking about and will pursue it.
