    Default O-U-C-H! Maximum Pain weapon

    http://www.newscientist.com/article....mg18524894.500

    (snip)
The US military is funding development of a weapon that delivers a bout of excruciating pain from up to 2 kilometres away. Intended for use against rioters, it is meant to leave victims unharmed. But pain researchers are furious that work aimed at controlling pain has been used to develop a weapon. And they fear that the technology will be used for torture....

I'm sure there will be some comments on this.

I've heard about stuff like this before. The idea is to develop non-lethal yet effective weapons. I'm sure some will call it barbaric. But if the alternative is to shoot them, it's not barbaric

Non lethal weapons are GREAT - provided the use of these weapons is still tightly regulated. For instance, I don't want any traffic stop to involve the use of these weapons ...or to have a bunch of political protesters attacked with these weapons during a peaceful if energetic protest.

Slippery slope, but if we keep control of ALL WEAPON USE, then some nonlethal alternatives will make the cops job easier and better.

I think it is mainly for riot control, rather than warfare. Also, even "non-lethal" weapons can
    sometimes be lethal.

i doubt it will be used for what it really is supposed to be used for. I wonder how many people it is suppose to take down with a single blow

I may have many faults, but being wrong ain't one of them.

I think the defense department is researching non-lethal weapons for warfare. Another benefit is that for innocent civilians caught in the cross-fire. While it wouldn't be pleasant for them, at least they wouldn't be dead. But like dd said, when these weapons are developed they should be tightly controlled.

No matter what weapons they come out with, whether lethal or non lethal, there will always be A)Those who find a way to use it inappropriately for the wrong reasons, and B)People who will take a seemingly harmless non lethal weapon and alter it to use for the wrong reasons. I'm not saying don't create more weapons, but don't have high hopes for such tightly regulated restrictions.
