with my research paper. Please. Can anyone name any songs in which the artist has made both an obscene version and a radio-friendly version where they have changed the words? Any info would be great--thanks everyone!

Creep by Radiohead comes to mind where they changed the line from "so fuckin special" to "so very special".

I think the Black Eyed Peas have both Lets Get Retarded, and the more pc Lets Get it Started on their cd. Not an obscene example, but at least more radio-friendly lyrics. Good luck on your paper, kat
i don't know if I would qualify it as obscene, but Black Eyed Peas "Let's get Retarded" that was edited to Let's get it Started."
As I was searching for your request I came across a list of songs deemed "questionable" after 9-11. "What a wonderful world" is in there!!

Eminem has prolly done lots of those? I donno. I would try more along the lines of rap, they seem to do that a bit.

Thanks you guys so much. I knew you guys could help.![]()

Crystal method has a song called "Name of the Game" that starts out with this guy saying "Listen up, all you motherfuckers!" It sure gets their attention quick, and it's a great song.
The radio version, not surprisingly, has been changed. But I'm not sure how much radio play this song got--even though it is probably the best on the CD ("Tweekend").

there are tons of examples. most of the time, particularly in hiphop, they just add a sound effect or cut the "offending" word entirely for the radio version. white/rob zombie is fond of doing this little thing where the word kinda scratches and goes backwards sounding, i know specifically "more human than human" does that. tool's "sober" switches "jesus wont you fucking whistle" for "wont you TRY and whistle" on the edit. manson's "beautiful people" switches "hate every motherfucker that's in your way" for "hate every hater that's in your way". these are just ones off the top of my head. oh and "back that ass up" by juvenile was "back that thing up" for the radio.![]()

2 definite examples come to mind: Melanie C (a Spice girl) had a solo debut single (not the one with Bryan Adams) that had the line, "I am not a whore", which got changed for radio and the film clip. I forget what it got changed to, but I think a previous verse line was inserted.
Similarly, Manic Street Preachers song, "Roses in the hospital", had the line "We don't want your fucking love", which in the film clip / single version got changed to "Roses in the hospital" - the title of the song!
I am certain that radio versions of the Blondie hit, "Heart of glass" were changed so that "turned out to be a pain in the ass" was deleted.

Date Rape by Sublime-- There are actually two different edits out, one with the usual sirens over the cuss words or cuts, and the new one I heard; where the last verse at the end of the song "now he takes it in the behind" the word "behind" is edited out with a new ambulance siren track.
I heard this on a Clear Channel station.

Wow, you guys are great. Thanks again--I'm including a couple of your suggestions in my paper. I have even rediscovered some new songs to play at work!

Chad- i have never heard an edit of "heart of glass" on the radio, it always says "ass". exotica, something you might want to make a note of....two songs in particular come to mind... i heard them mid-afternoon on a classic rock station. "who are you" by the who, and "money" by pink floyd. the respective lines "who the fuck are you?" and "don't gimme none of your goody-good bullshit" were NOT bleeped. BUT, they bleeped a green day song and some other song that escapes me right now right around the same time. i recall thinking at the time that hey, maybe if it's classic rock it's cool? i dont know what that means, but i always thought it was strange.

oh yeah, also....green day's "longview" and NIN's "closer" i heard on the radio today and they only edited the "u" from the fuck. so...it was basically ineffective. "i wanna f-ck you like an animal" HMMM WHAT DOES HE MEAN? and then right after that they played "here to stay" by Korn and didnt bleep it at all, and this was around maybe 6 PM.
