One of the old clubs in town was run by an ex-dancer, and it was a good place. She was more like a mom to the dancers than anything, and discouraged the excessive substance abuse that ran rampant at other clubs. Of course, the dancers resented this and went to the other clubs for a little more 'freedom'. She ended up selling out to a larger club. Too bad.

As Susan said, club ownership doesn't have that much of a different percentage of female ownership than other high-startup businesses - I know Gold Club in Baltimore cost a million to renovate and make into a gown club. Add to community/law enforecement opposition or even organized crime connections stripclubs can have, and it's a tough business. I've worked with one female manager who basically ran the place, the owner only occasionally checked it. I didn't like her management skills - then again I wasn't very fond of the club altogether, so ya know.

Omidog! A girl here in Austin with me has been dancing at Lodge and loves it! We've been trying to plan a weekend working there for a while! She dances by Veronica here and is a curvy latina. I'm not sure which name she uses there. She is so impressed with the lack of heavy grinding there....I'm ALL about that!!!

Hope to see you there sometime soon!

I work at a place in colorado that has a female owner. she used to dance there, then about 5 years ago or so, someone actually bought it for her. how about that for a gift?

she would tell me about how much she would get in trouble there and how she always had problems with management. Imagine their surprise when they met their new boss!

She's alright as a manager, but she appears to be over her head at times. She tells of how frustrating it is dealing with ordinances trying to shut her down, lawyer fees, insurance, workman's comp, zoning, etc. it doesn't sound like too much fun.

Actually, I am working on opening my own club right now. I have a male partner, but he's largely the financial manager, who'll be dealing with vendors, etc. I will be running the club and the dancers. Having been in the biz for 12+ years, it KILLS me to see what putz's most managers in this area are, and how much money they could be making if they just put 5 seconds of thought into it. Most of them put in two poles, something that almost passes for a stage, and calls it good. Ugh. I've worked in the high-class, high-money clubs, but no one here feels pushed to do anything like that becuase there's no real competition close by. Time to change that!

I currently own my own business already, and this should be a fairly easy transition. We're working up our business plan now, and starting to look at properties, etc.

I think one reason more dancers don't own clubs is the initial capital problem. Opening a club is EXPENSIVE (easily $90-120K, more depending on where and what you're at), and most banks won't give loans to a stripper. I've gotten around that because 1) I own a "legitmate" business that I started from scratch and 2) my husband is co-signing the loan, and he's got a great job. We're also looking at venture capitalists to help out initially.

I think the reason more women don't own clubs is that those who've not been dancers have a rather skewed view of what actually goes on at most respectable clubs. Many women wouldn't want to be associated with the "sex industry," and view it as dirty and immoral. At least, here in the midwest. Perhaps things are different in other areas.

    Just my 2cents.

Crazy Horse in Anchorage AK is owned by a woman , a black woman, and her sister, and she owned (maybe still does) another club by the name of Northern Divas across town.

I work on the road with a girl who owned a club in Iowa. Shotgun Willies in Laurel Montana is female owned and managed. The husband died and the wife is running it.

As far as the large popular clubs in major cities, where a lot of politics and capital is involved in opening a club, and keeping it open, women haven't broken through to that level.

Woman much like blacks need to learn how to gather up investors, create large chunks of capital, and play the game like the middle aged tycoon white men do, if they want to be part of the major leagues of strip club operations.
