I'd like to know of a great razor brand too. The ones I use never seem to be sharp enough! And I alwayssss get razor burn >:/

I don't mean a straight razor. A safety razor. Like this.

Do you find shaving with a safety razor more difficult/prone to nicks? How do you shave your labia etc with it? Is your technique different than that of a disposable razor?I'm pretty hairy and a cost effective razor would be awesome.

BIC Soleil with three blades. The best of them all!!!!

It's heavier, so at first it will feel awkward. If you're used to plastic ones. But once you get the feel of it in your hands, and you get comfortable with the way it feels you'll be fine. It's pretty hard to cut yourself. Practice on your legs, get the feel of it etc.
The only times I have cut myself is when I bought cheap blades from Sally instead, of the Merkur brand. You get 10 double sided blades for about $14 and they really do last! They are the sharpest and the best. If you decide try a safety, don't skimp, get the Merkurs or you will nick yourself. You may have to order them or go to a store that specializes in shaving supplies. Also, IMHO, worth it.
The technique isn't much different, but I do take more time and care. The main difference like I mentioned, is the weight. A safety is heavier in the hand. But the blade is super sharp and that actually makes it harder to nick yourself. I've nicked myself with the drugstore, even the pricier ones much, much more often. They are cheap and sometimes jagged. That's why we get nicks.
That's what causes ingrown hairs and bumps, dull razors, and dirt too, but a dull razor will do it every time and I feel like those plastic ones come out of the pack dull after using a real blade. Learning to shave with one really isn't much of a transition.
It's the same motions, you're just holding the razor at a slightly different angle and need to learn to use less pressure.
And as black chick, prone to nasty razor bumps, it's been a godsend. I never get them anymore.
But, all that said, you may try it and hate it....
I personally will never go back to drugstore razors.
This might help you too.

I don't shave much since I've had Laser, but I actually find the Shick Extreme 3 male razor working excellent! Male razors usually lasts longer than female!

I also like the epilator, believe it or not. I think they're a little less punishing these days? Anyway, I want to get a newer version. I like them b/c they get the hair @ the root level.

I love love love the gilette sensor, but the blades are not sold anymore. I went over to venus a few years ago, but miss the other lots. 2 blades work better then 3 or more for me..3 I don't get as close of a shave for some reason. I suffer from terrible razor burn, so I shave with the grain and not against it. I never have silky smooth legs even if I shave against the grain...very coarse hair and sensitive leg skin. I have tried everything for razor burn, but this is typical for people with wavy or curly hair, like mine, because the leg hairs grow back curved and not straight.
A tip for keeping your razors sharp for longer is to clean them out thoroughly. I use rubbing alcohol on mine before/after shaving. Also, I do not know how to describe it but there is a way to sharpen razors using blue jeans. Youtube this. It works!
