    Default Hostage to the Devil

I was at my mom's house last night grabbing some of my stuff that I had left behind during my move to my new place and I found this old book I had read when I was 17 called "Hostage to the Devil". It's about 5 case studies on real life exorcisms and yeah, the book is a little creepy and all but I'm into that weird shit. Anyway, I brought it home last night and left it on the coffee table because I needed a good night read. My friend was over and her, my bf, and I were just hanging out talking when my bf saw the book. At first he was like, "Oh, cool! Where'd you get this? I wanna read it!" and he sat reading the first chapter. After about 20 minutes of reading, he looked up and told me to get rid of the book, that it's evil. I thought he was kidding me, but he was serious and started freaking me out. He said reading the book would invite evil into our home and he grabbed his kabbalah book and all these wierd jewish medallions and said we needed to cleanse the atmoshere and shit. My friend started freaking out a little too. So I told him to calm down, that all was good, no big deal, it's just a book. As he started to reiterate the book's evilness, one of our speakers on our PC cracked really loudly and made us all jump. That was enough of a sign for him, too much of a coincidence. He started crying in front of both of us and freaking out even more. I had to take the book out to my car! When I got back I gave him a hug and I was laughing over his over-dramatization until I felt his heartbeat. I thought he was going to go into fibrillation his heart was beating so fast! He swears up and down that he wasn't goofing around and that he actually felt evil coming from the book. Oh, he also thinks I'm in cahoots with the devil because this stuff doesn't bother me and that I read wierd shit like that all the time.

So.........do you guys think that a book can be that evil that it makes a 25 year old Jewish man cry in front of people and freak out? Am I evil for reading it?

    Yes, you are evil.

Naw, I don't think a mass produced book is going to be chock-full of evilness. That, and I think Kabbala is crap. (And I'm Jewish!!)

That's like the jouga board. I don't think something like that can bring evil into your home. It's just old fashioned wives tales.

I dunno Hottie.. I wouldnt take any chances, I like that stuff too but watching all those exorcism documentaries on TV makes me feel very weary about that stuff. While my religion (catholism) says that there is no more evil, watching that stuff and hearing your story is enough to scare me senseless... Get rid of the book!! Your boyfriend's reaction seemed like it was too strong not to take seriously.

what does "being a Satanist" mean?

As far as the book, the reviews I've read of it often mention that it made the reviewer feel somewhat badly,...but crying and freaking out? I think only a weak person would do that, no offense....

Well, for some people the occult is an uneasy concept to understand so take that into consideration. Please.

That's why I'm confused. I don't get what was so upsetting about the book. Crying and freaking out is completely out of character for him.

I do believe that a twenty-five year old Jewish man can convince himself that a book is so evil that it makes him start shaking and crying. But an object's only value is that which we ascribe to it. For him, it may have been a gateway between the earth and the underworld. For me, it would probably serve as a doorstop.

Hooray, for you, Sinn the Satanist! The literature I've come across from that particular sect has been particularly inspiring. Being a Satanist, as I've understood, emphasizes sensationalism in lieu of Christian asceticism. They don't really worship Satan so much as they worship humankind and its own remarkable abilities. It's sort of a 'We're too cool to grovel to this 'God' thing' sort of religion. Bathing yourself in babies blood and dancing around a bonfire is appreciated, but not required.

    Kisses!

I don't think the book itself is anything special, evil or otherwise. But obviously your BF BELIEVED it was, and he was really affected by it. Maybe he has never read anything like that before--was it really graphic or exceptionally scary? Or maybe it hit on a childhood fear. My husband's mother (catholic) used to tell him all kinds of horrible shit about how his naughtiness was going to damn him to hell/bring evil on their house, etc. Whatever the reason, something he read really struck DEEP.

If the book is not particularly special to you, I would drop it off at a thrift store or donate it to the library, and let him do whtever he needs to do to feel safe in his home again. If you really like the book, stash it at your Mom's for a while.

But I definitely would not laugh at him or try to tell him it is all in his head or whatever. It probably is, but so what? He will never Believe that, anyway. Whatever scared him so bad was real to HIM, and that is what is really important.

What is a kabbalah book, anyway?

People are told who and what to believe in since birth, the devil is evil god is good BLAH!
why is it devil spelled backwards is lived and god spelled backwards is dog?Sorry way off topic..I think seriously that he convinced himself the book was evil and his fear of the unknown manifested itself thru tears and a racing heartbeat...no yer not evil and neither is the book....

satanism is so dumb and has nothing to do with the occult really
    its a "SELF(ish) empowering philosophy

some common sense and then bullshit
like social darwinism just a sorry excuse to try and justify being an asshole
and a religion/ideology to tell you to enjoy yourself is ridiculous
    haha
im scared of ouija boards tho
and im kinda "iffy" about occult related things
and think maybe it has more to do with alien like things even
to me spirituality is more an all encompassing oneness with the universe
    haha
more than a god being thing and evil devil i feel its more like the light and dark duality and nature of shit good and bad notneccesarily in those terms
and things when natural order is poppin shit more works and moves towards the "good kinda thawng
and religion and shit like that is if not created at least exploited and used as a divisionary diversion to keep us from that individual yet undividual oneness with all
    /truth
    or whatever

and i feel its by malicious intent too
dont call it conspiracy theory call it networking

LOL Princess!~~~~~~...I believe that everything on this earth has good and evil atached to it whether being people or objects. So I think that your friend may be spiritual in ways that you are not and noticed something that bothered his way of beliefs and maybe provoked evil to blow the speaker.

Well maybe its not the book itself but whats in it. Like the movie the craft. You shouldn't say or invoke anything you don't know. Maybe reading the contents will bring out some evil spirit i don't know it could be true. Because u are just reading not knowing what the words mean.

hottie I don't think you're evil for reading it. I do think, though, since he feels so strongly against it you should just keep it out of the house.

Yeah, I've got the book at work with me right now. I love it! I think it's a very interesting read if you don't mind reading about the supernatural. It is a bit graphic in nature, but for the most part it's just religious gobbelty-gook. I just found it weird that he creeped out the way he did because he's usually into that kind of stuff.

I know I shouldn't pick on him for it but he had called me earlier and we we're bitching back and forth over something stupid, so I told him if he didn't cut the crap then I was bringing the oogety-boogety book home. Needless to say he shut up and the bitching ended. Maybe him being scared of an exorcism novel is a blessing in disguise?

For the same reason that "a Toyota" spelled backwards is "a Toyota." A linguistic coincidence. Words for "god" and "devil" existed long before these English varieties.

Here's a linguistic question: If Satanism is about humanity more than about demon worship, why isn't it called Humanism?

Ok for who ever ask what Qabalah is. This a general answer. It's ancient Jewish mysticism, it's a form of study that concerns rites and rituals and the summoning of angels and daemons for one own purposes. It was around far before Christianity and basic Judeism today. *Hope that helps a little.

As to Hottie, I wouldn't worry about it too much honestly. Kepp it away from him if it makes you and him feel better.

I think he would turn and flee at my book collection, which includes Qabalah books as well as tons of stuff by Aleister Crowley. LOL.

Anyway, have you considered that the reaosn he feels this way is simply because of the nature of the book? Excorsisms (today's versions anyway) are largely based on Catholic beliefs and OBVIOUSLY there's a little conflict there between the religions. Some Ctholics believe than anything Jewish is sinful and wrong, and vice/versa.

It all goes back to the factioning of the religions, and who's the true top dawgs for God.

Anyway, if you like the book, keep it, just keep it away from him. If it doesn't mean that much send it to me, I have a spot on the shelf for such a book!

No, but I think your BF is either really, really religious or fearful and doesn't have a lot of emotional fortitude, or is mentally ill. I hate to say it, but those are the options I see.
