Default How safe are we really ?

After a few bizarre incidents this week I thought it was best to pass along some good advice. I also hope others will post useful tips as well.

    1. Always let a close friend know where you are.
    2. Use caution when handing out your cellphone # (Anyone can do a reverse search and get your billing address)
    3. Get a P.O Box( preferrably one w/ a street addy too) this is useful to have your bills (such as cell phone) and your car registration sent to.
    4. Be aware that your car license number can be used to obtain your home addy.
    5. Ask your insurance carrier to mail your statement to your P.O. Box
    6. Anyone with YIM should be advised that your Yahoo ID can be used to gain valuable information about you too.
    7. Its best to use what I call a throw away phone. This lessens the chance of actually having some idiot trace your phone number back to you.
    8. Look in obtaining a license to carry a concealed weapon. Your local police department can provide you with more details. Be usre to practice at the range at least 2-4 times per month. There are firing ranges everywhere and you can hire someone to act as a "personal trainer" there too.
    9. Taking a class in personal safety in a good idea as well.

I forgot to add that your email addy can be used to read your emails too. So use caution when handing that out as well.

    Thanks Farrah..
My friend did the dumbest thing last night, a custy asked her to use her phone cuz “he couldn’t find his”… I told him we don’t have one as I kindly kicked her under the table and she was like “OH I have mine”… He called his own phone.. NOW HE HAS HER #!

Personal Email addresses can also be revered.. there are free reverse and software reverse services anyone can use…IP addresses are attached to every email sent / also some cookies and Java (I believe) accepted on your browser.

When a customer asks me if I drove to work.. I say, NO my BF is coming or say you have a driver.

Making a few stops on your way home and taking different routes is a good idea also.

Thanks so much for the words of wisdom. I had no idea there were ways to get a home address of f of an e~mail or cell number. I do have a PO box (uhh not with the post office but with a physical address) and have for years. It is listed on my drivers license.

I remember once I was pulled over and given a ticket, I didn't feel I deserved the ticket and told the cop so. A few days later I went to my PO box and the lady behind the desk told me that a cop had been by and he that he wanted to 'reverse' my ticket. He left his card. I told her it was ok ~ I'd just pay it.

I actually did get a letter in the mail from the police department reversing the ticket out about a week later, but the thing that always bothered me is that he could have and would have just shown up at my home.
    I purrr, therefore I am ...

    Great tips.
Always be cautious going to your car. And, look around when you leave, take note of cars following you and have paper and pen to write down driver #'s and brief description of creepy cars...............
I keep my dance bag in my trunk, as not to bring attention to myself. I always wear jeans to work and have a pair of tennis in the trunk, just in case of emergencies.
    Bands will make me dance..........

omg, now im a bit worried about my safety...

    another point to make,
DONT use your real name on any login-ins or profiles online...
    change passwords constantly
dont have a pattern, ie make sure you dont leave the house alone each day at the exact same time...dont go to the bank every "thursday at 3pm" for example
if you can get a scary looking dog, that might help at least

These are things that I have been following for years. I don't have a gun but I do carry a can of bear spray with me everywhere I go. The can is roughly the size of a medium can of hairspray, and easy to grab out of my purse. It will shoot up to 10 yards, so that way I don't need to be very close to an attacker for it to work.

I became very cautious back in 1986 when I was still in high school and working at McDonald's. I aquired a stalker from my job, and was harassed for the better part of a year (on and off) until I moved to another state with my family.

I think as dancers we tend to be more cautious then an average woman. No one is really safe, and can be harmed by stalkers or idenity theives in any profession. It sucks, I know. But luckily most people are good and decent, and would never intentionally harm another. Just remember to be on the look out for that 1% of psycos out there.
