    Default Do shots hurt puppies??

Today I took my chihuahua to the vet to get him a dip and his nails done. When I was there the doc told me he needed three shots so i said o.k. When I went to go pick him up this afternoon he can hardly even move and if he does he screams, he looks very sick, so i took him back to the vet and he said it was cause of the shots.
    His shots were:

    Bordatella Booster
    Rabies Canine 1 year booster
    DHLPP Booster

Do you think this is true? Is my puppy gonna be o.k.? I love my puppy to death i'd die if anything would happen to him. Do you think he could've been mistreated??? or is he like that cause of the shots?

well, I know when my kids got shots they cried and were in discomfort. Some shots can burn when they're injected and can cause sorness for some time at the injection site. Sometimes kids run a slight fever after certain shots. I'd imagine the same could apply to puppy shots as well.

    ^^ What she said.

My dog is always in a bad mood no matter what I take her to the vet for, but a little discomfort after a shot is a hell of a lot better than having to deal with rabies down the road.
If your dog bit someone and was not current on his shots he would either be put down or quarantined at the pound. I don't know where you live, but in my town the quarantine fees can go in excess of $4000.

Heres a site I highly recomend for you. www.vegsource.com/animal/dogs/index.html
It sounds like he may have had too high a dose for such a little dog.How old is he? What was the DIP he had? What did he have done to his nails, just clipped? Maybe they cut them too short and his feet are hurting
He should only get a Rabies shot evey 3yrs

Well how old is your puppy? If he's still young, I have to question the Dr. A rabis shot isn't supposta be given to any dog under 6 months old.

About the others, theya re usually ok to give a puppy over 8 weeks old. Maybe they clipped his nails too short? Or maybe the dip is causing him problems.

Anyway, hope puppy poo will get better!

Bordatella can be administered through the pet's nostrils,in the form of drops. This booster is an immunization shot from Kennel Cough. If you aren't planning to kennel your pet anytime soon, this booster is not needed every 6 months. It is just needed once a year.

Sounds about normal for those shots and a dog that size. Just give him lots of loving and after a couple of days it will be okay. If you have a heating pad, laying on that may bring your puppy a little more comfort. Make sure he drinks plenty of water, eats and is going to the bathroom.

Rabies shots are mandatory - there is nothing you can do about them within legal limits. Read "What Your Vet Doesn't Tell You About Vaccinations" - I realize there are many reasoned arguments against her theories, but certain things are undeniable. Like the percentage of a vet's income that comes from vaccinations, and the fact that vets do encourage you to vaccinate sick dogs. I don't vaccinate my dog except for rabies (because I have to) and she has normal illnesses that come with old age and bad breeding, but she has never had worms, fleas or parasites of any kind let alone parvo.

This is just not true. They should get a shot each and every year.

I don't take my animals to the Vet unless there is something really wrong with them. I give them all the wormer, 7-in-1's, and their rabies shot too.

In California, the rabies shot is required to get every three years, not every year.Their reasoning is that most domestic pets aren't out frolicing around with stray animals,so there's no need to get it every year.

Sometimes animals, humans too, get sluggish and don't feel too well after numerous injections. I know I felt like absolute shit for about 2 weeks after I got my vaccines before coming to college (2 weeks b/c I'm not supposed to get live virus vaccines and I was given the MMR). Lots of injections given at one time can take the wind out of anyone's sail, especially baby chihuaua. I know I get sore at the injection site for a few days. Had blood drawn 2 weeks ago and my arm is still tender. Make sure the little pup is getting plenty of water and enough good food. Keep him warm (little body needs to stay warm to fight off any infection or fever). Just pamper him (as I'm sure you are lucky little dude) and take him back to the vet if he doesn't get better in the next couple of days. Also, don't be scared to call and ask the vet questions.

Especially if it is a small dog, it will bother them more. I had a Yorkie, and she always yelped if I touched the tender spot on her back where they gave her the shot, or picked her up in any wrong way. She had to be picked up just right, or she would be very pissy. They recommend kennel cough if you take your dog to have them groomed very frequently, or if they are staying in a kennel while you are away, or if they somehow get lost and end up in the pound or shelter. It is better to have it. As far as rabies goes, puppies get their rabies shot at least by 15 weeks, or 4 months. My pup got it at 13 weeks. But yes, these things are normal, no, I dont believe they gave your pup a higher dose, it just affects animals differently. Thats why they tell you at the vet to watch out for any swelling or unusual side effects.

My baby who is almost 11 years old and a fat 8 pounds (she should be 6 or 7) acts like she is DYING every time I take her to the vet. You'd think they were stabbing her when the take her temperature and of course she doesn't like shots either. I recall when she was a puppy some of the shots made her sort of sick and they told me to give her benadryl before she had her next round of shots. I'd just call the vet and ask them and if you aren't comfortable with that vet maybe look for another one. I've never had to leave my girl and always am right there with her unless it is something major like when they've had to draw blood from her neck and took her in the back or if she has a teeth cleaning. Usually when she gets a shot they let me hold her but sometimes they have to have me and a technician and a doctor holding her because she's very strong for being so tiny!

I didn't know that about Cali. I know here the animals have to get a rabies booster every year. I do it every year, even if they haven't had contact with the woodsies. In the city they could get bitten by a rat or something like that. And in the country they could get bitten by a raccoon, stray dog, or squirrel.

I just don't want to take the chance. All my fuzzies are outdoor/indoor pets so they do come in contact with wild animals all the time. That and the cat brings home "presents" so she's at a high risk, and the dog as well since they are friends.

But again, is puppy doing better? And how old is he? Some younger pups don't take well to some of those meds.

WOW, they gave it to your pup at that young? I guess it varies from stste to state the same as Dr. by Dr. Our Vet refuses to give rabies shots until they are at least 6 months old. She says they have a lower risk of problems and infection if they are a little older.

All my pups started getting their shots ASAP..as soon as your vet deems it ok you need to get those shots. I bred Pitbulls for a while, and although they are more prone to catch Parvo, that is something you do not want to go through. It's almost like an AIDS for dogs. I've been through that a fwe times and after that all my dogs got shots as soon as my vet would allow. The rabies vacc. can wait a bit longer, but the others are extremely important. hey can pick up the germs from water, other dogs feces,etc...almost anything that you'd see on a normal walk.

Most animals hate vet visits & are "upset" afterwards.....maybe they misread our cues about why they have to go, and I'm sure the smells and sounds are distressing. People feel that way about the dentist.
And let's not even talk about people who fear needles...
He'll be okay and it's for the best. Rabies is still out there....

I haver a pug who is small and never showed discomfort during or after the shots. It seems a little strange. My dog acts fine afterwards and the only thing the vet says to expect is for my dog to get tired after the shots. I would take him to another vet just to make sure if your really concerned, just to make sure its not a bad reaction.

Law says a Booster every year, and you will get a notice via snail mail. BUT, a rabies shot is good for 3 years. I learned about this when my one dog years ago scrapped with a Racoon. My dog was restricted to his yard for 1 month, and had to get a booster that same day.

Every state has you apply for a COUNTY license when you get you're animal a rabies shot. A booster is required, if the animal bites a person or other domestic pet, you will be fined for not getting you're booster shot once a year, the booster keeps the rabies vaccine strong in the animals system.

Here in Florida it used to be 6 months a pet gets a rabies vaccine, now it's at 3 months. At least my vets office.

And yes, pups will run a temp. and feel sick after shots. I can imagine a tiny Chi. As mine are alwys the big guys and they are so sleepy after shots to this day. If he does not get up or improve....take him in....He should not go down on you.

Again i had 3 pups who got vaccinated for Parvo. virus, and then 2 weeks later got it...They died with in a 24 hour period.

We have some vets who DO NOT like the whole "puppy shot" thing. But rabies shots are required when a animal sees a Vet.

Shots for pets are under the gun with some vets here. Anyone or pet can have a reaction and get very very ill. or die from them, and i say this because it's true.

You're little guy should be fine. And remember DIPS are very strong too! They can make a pup ill.

Sweetie, he shouldn't be doing that. He could have an allergy or something. Small dogs should not have a different reaction to medication than large dogs - if they did, you would give them less. Like food, but different. You should probably take him back in.

If it were my dog I would take him back or to another vet right now. Im like an over protective parent with my dog, if she even sniffles I run her to the vet.

Hey Striperella, go ahead and take him to another vet. If it has been almost a week, you need to get him seen. He shouldn't still be down. Get him seen, for his health, and your piece of mind. Good luck.
