Default Changes in labels and party positions - reflections

I was reviewing a draft outreach letter for a conservative environmental group and...started thinking about how the parties have changed, labels have changed and positions have changed...wanted to see if maybe there was a thread there

    Starting with Republicans/ Conservatives:

What does it mean to be Republican? To be Conservative? For me, it means strength, stability, responsibility. Responsibility to sound fiscal and social practices that provide prosperous opportunities now and in the future. Stability that comes from being seen as consistent, strong, and fair by both domestic and international constituents. Strength for our country and for the values we hold most dear. Most of all it means being Conservative…making decisions that permanently conserve our ability to work, play, and live well. You have the power to make those decisions, and help conserve the natural resources which are so vital to our nation's prosperity and ongoing security.

    Legacy.
"The conservation of natural resources is the fundamental problem. Unless we solve that problem it will avail us little to solve all others."

    Theodore Roosevelt, October 4, 1907

Once the party of fiscal responsibility, the first to permanently protect the land that filters our water and air, our leadership is now seen as pro-business and unconcerned with the daily issues which are important to us all.

From the beginning of the party, Republicans have supported fiscal and natural responsibility - conserving our resources (environmental and economic) and developing ways to build on them to create more wealth rather than less. Goes all the way back to Teddy R. and ol' Honest Abe. Curious that now most people see CONSERVATIves as being against CONSERVATIon - even of fiscal responsibility (giving tax breaks and refunds when we're under a multi-trillion dollar deficit going back more than 30 years!!).

Anyone care to comment on this? or take a crack at the liberal / democrat (or other party) version?

I observed somewhat of the same thing in a different thread - the spendthrift use of limited fossils fuels and turning one's back on alternative energy sources goes against a true conservative/conservation mindset.

Re fiscal policies: I don't think that you'll get much of an argument, seeing as how most of the fiscal conservatives on this board are alarmed at the level of government expenditures and don't follow lockstep (contrary to assertions elsewhere) with the current Administration's economic approaches.

While I'm a fan of Abraham Lincoln, one couldn't exactly call him a conservationist before his time. However, Theodore Roosevelt, another one to be admired, certainly was.
