    Default pre-workout food?

I just went for my 1st morning workout and PPHHHEEWW oh my I thought I was going to fall asleep. This book I read told me not to eat before a morning workout and just drink water. Yea, well I drank my 16oz of water and then working out wasnt a great idea. Im trying to start going in the morning to get it over with for the day.
Does anyone else workout in the morning and what do you eat before?
I was thinking maybe a small protein shake or something to get that hunrgy feeling away.

    *Thanks*

My trainer told me to eat at least an hour before. I usually eat cereal or a protein bar. I don't usually work out in the morning though but when I have that worked fine. He also told me to eat protein after I workout because your muscles need it.

I train really hard, so usually before my workout I have a small salad with protein, for example, I will usually have a small salad with a few tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce, mushrooms, and a can of tuna with lite dressing. Sometimes its also good to have a small piece of fruit such as an apple or orange, if you aren't really that hungry, because fruits have a lot of sugar in them and therefore give you instant energy, protein bars are good too, but i prefer to stick to foods that are in a natural state, such as fruits and veggies.

im the type that I can not have anything to eat or drink (more than 8oz) 1 1/2 to 2 hours before I do any type of cardio. It feels like my stomach is weighing me down. That's just my body. Therefore I wait till after my workout to get protein, carbs, and of course water in. Each body is different what works for one person might not work for you.

I may have many faults, but being wrong ain't one of them.

Try a protein shake or an enrgy drink, like Rock Star or Red Bull. THey won't feel so heavy like solid food does.

yep you need some carbs but just watch the sugar levels, want to have something as low as you can find and protein is a must after working out

Try granola/protein bars or a fruit smoothie. Bananas are good for the potassium too. Don't start out with too much (ie, one granola bar or a banana or half a smoothie, not all 3). If it's not enough (your body will let you know), then adjust accordingly. Keep in mind you don't want anything heavy that will weigh you down, so nothing fatty or rich.

What book are you reading? Working out with nothing in your body is pretty bad.

I also "heard" about working out with just water "in" your body prior to having breakfast is good. Then again I've also "heard" that eating something is a great way to kick start your metabolism for the day.

I agree with the others -- have something snack-ish that is protein laden. Personally I have a few nuts and seeds (pumpkin, and sunflower) and heaps of water. If I do have nothing before I work-out... my work-out is usually low impact (ie walking) and won't last longer than 15-20 minutes.

The book was The Body Sculpting Bible for Women. Most of the information was helpful but OTOH Im beginning to question alot of things about fitness now not b/c one thing was wrong but because there are soo many books and opinions on fitness....I have alot more reading to do.

they are pretty boring to read but will give you the best exercise physiology info is any exercise physiology journal such as The Journal of exercise physiology http://www.css.edu/users/tboone2/asep/fldr/fldr.htm

If you drink energy drinks, make sure they are sugar and caffeine free. Otherwise you will "crash" about 45 min after you drink it, not to mention the sugar that's in it may cause your body to store more fat.

I personally recommend drinking only water..... it takes the hunger pangs away, and keeps your muscles hydrated. Also if you are doing cardio to lose weight, it is better to eat AFTER you excercise because your metabolism will burn calories faster then.
