    Default Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

The Hawaii chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society has officially kicked-off training schedules for their new bicycling team: Team In Training - Hawaii, in anticipation of our first event as a Team, which will be the Haleiwa Metric Century (100 kilometers/62.2 miles) and will be held on April 24 at 7:30am starting from the Kaiaka State Park in Haleiwa and ending at the North Shore Market Place.

I've ridden in various cycling events before, but never as a member of a team, so this will be a new experience for me.

I started-out my fundraising drive, going slowly at first, but this will accelerate as the Metric Century grows closer. I asked the LLS main office in New York if they would accept donations from the Adult Industry and they gave me an enthusiastic thumbs-up. So, I sent emails to strip clubs, Adult Video stars and production companies and even a few national magazines. I'll do follow-ups over the weekend.

If anyone would like to help sponsor me, or simply pass my donation link around, here it is
    http://www.active.com/donations/fund...=tntsdhDBrowni

Wish me luck as I start-out on this new project. My plans for riding for the LAF are on hold, for now, as well as planning for the next Tour de Cure. Keeping the number of my projects small will, hopefully, be less stressful and I can concentrate on a few things at once, rather than a whole lot of projects at the same time.

If there are any other TNT members out there, post your donation links in this thread, if you like. We're all in this together.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is a national voluntary health agency dedicated to curing leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and to improving the quality of life of patients and their families. The Society was established in 1949 as The de Villiers Foundation. In 2000, the Society changed its name from The Leukemia Society of America to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to emphasize its commitment to fighting all blood cancers.

As a Leukemia survivor, I appreciate your commitment. Had I the money, I'd definitely support your cause, but I'm a college kid. I do my best to stay involved with the ACS as their female scholarship recipient. Good luck with your ride, and thank you for your support. You're awesome.

I do a marathon for TNT every year, too. I lost my finace to Mantle Cell Lymphoma 6 years ago next August. I will be running the Chicago marathon this year. Duane's fundraising committment is a lot higher than mine is, so PLEASE support him. If everybody on this board gave him only $10, that woudl make a huge difference to him!

    GO DUANE!

    GO TNT!

let's help make sure nobody else ever has to go through what my beloved Rick and I went through EVER AGAIN!

This is a copy of the fundraising letter I wrote for last year's marathon:

    March 18, 2005

In late July 1997, I wrote to a friend:

“My life has turned upside down. Rick has cancer.”

“Rick” was Derek Scholl, my friend, fiancé, and in his word, “sweetie.” Until shortly before his diagnosis with a rare form of Lymphoma, Rick was a reserved, optimistic man who enjoyed life deeply. He was kind to people and animals, and was sincerely interested in other peoples’ lives. Rick had passionate opinions on almost every subject, and yet accepted people on their own terms. He was the smartest person I have ever met, and continued to gather knowledge his entire life. He once told me, “Any day I don’t learn something new, I consider a wasted day.”

When we heard the news, we believed that treatment would be a temporary obstacle in what was otherwise a pretty exciting time in Rick’s life. He was building up a business as a professional photographer. He was taking college courses toward a degree in music management. And for the first time in a very long time, he was in love.

Throughout the 25 months that followed, Rick remained optimistic. We planned our wedding between rounds of chemotherapy. When I cried out my frustration and fear, it was Rick who told me it would all be OK. People told me that I was being very strong, but in reality, Rick was the strong one. If ever he was afraid, he never let me know it.

On August 18, 1999, I made Rick a promise. “I swear to you, someday I will find a way to keep other families from going through this,” I told him. That night, the cancer won the battle.

Now I have found a way to keep my promise, but I need your help. I have committed to participate this May in the Indianapolis Life 500 Festival Mini-Marathon as part of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training program. In addition to completing the 13.1 mile walk/run, I have committed to raise funds to help fight lymphoma and other blood cancers. The funds I raise will be used to help find a cure and to improve the quality of life for patients and those who love them. Beyond raising funds, I am committed to training, walking and running hundreds of miles before I get to Indianapolis. This will be a big ordeal for me, but it is nothing compared to what cancer patients and their families go through every day.

Please think for a moment, and consider joining me in this fight. There are 1900 new cases of this disease every week. What if you knew that, in the future, your donation would prevent a loved one from hearing a diagnosis like Rick and his family heard?

PLEASE HELP US! PLEASE DONATE TO DUANE'S FUNDRAISING!

I spoke to some one who did the Metric Century last year.

According to him, there is little, if any, climbing on the Ride. Its mostly flat. That means the Metric Century will attract a lot more of the bike racers than other rides might. There are some good racers in Hawaii, well-trained and motivated to get the bragging rights for having "won" the Metric Century this year. Even though its supposed to be a ride, not a race. Even the local LLS office is referring to it as a race and one of them mentioned to me that "it would be so cool to have one of our purple jerseys crossing the line first".

Time to do some extra training on the fixed gear. A few modifications on the bike.

Anyway, I got my first two donations: Adult video star Summer Haze chipped-in $30. She had meant it for the LAF, but her company name and phone number identified her company as a seller of sex toys, etc. The LAF would send her money back to her, so I diverted it to my LLS donation box. I called and emailed her to ask if it was okay, but got no response. Better to do it this way, rather than have a nasty confrontation between Summer Haze and the LAF over the "acceptable donation" policy they have.

A bartender at a Country & Western bar I go to donated $5 out of her tip jar. She was having a slow night and it was all she had.

Thirty-five bucks is not a bad start and I still have over a month before the Metric Century.

Taking the bike into the shop to pick-up some new modifications for the bike to help me move faster. I'll see if I can cross the line first this year, or at least make a good showing for the LLS.

How much is your fundraising committment? Mine was $2500 last year, but (thankfully) only $1400 this year b/c I live so close to the marathon location.

Have you hit up your family and friends? That was where I got most of my money last year. Sometimes it takes 2 or 3 rounds of letters to do it. I put all my addy's in OUTLOOK, and printed them out on lables. THen I sent letters to everybody I knew. YOu wouldn't believe where I got donations from. Friends I knew only over the internet, parents of people I knew in grade school, all kinds of things.

I also went around to all the garage sales in my area and asked for their left-overs that didn't sell, then had a garage sale of my own. I raised over $500 in one weekend.

YOu ought to have a fundraising mentor for your team. Ask him or her for more ideas. ANd dont forget the mainstream businesses in your town, the ones you see as a messenger, and so on.

    My minimum goal is $1200.

My previous attempts to get donations from family went nowhere. Donations were promised, but never delivered. Family avoided me when I asked about donations toward either the Paradise Ride or Tour de Cure.

As far as garage sales, I'm selling-off some of my things and putting the money toward the Paradise Ride 2005. I raise the money and clean-out some of the junk I have that is still usable, but I no longer need or use it.

I'm going to need some help writing letters to the owners of local strip clubs to see about getting them to help sponsor me this year.

Interestingly enough, I understand that the owner of one club has in the past made charitable contributions, only to have the checks returned by the charities she was donatiing to.

Tell them if they donate over $100, you will write their name on your shirt or in some other way help them out. You can wrote on your shirt with fabric paint, or make transfers of their logos on your computer.

If you want, you can use part of my letter above, point out that this was written by a stripper in chicago who lost her fiance to MCL, etc. We are all in the strip club industry; lets stick together!

in my experience, women respong very strongly to this letter, I guess because they can realate. I would print out a copy of the letter on LLS stationery (or make a letterhead on your computer) and show it to all the strippers you know. Do this about midway to 3/4 of the eay through a good night (when the have made some money, but not wehn they are tired and jsut wanting to go home.) You could even keep it up in your booth and when they come up to ask you stuff say, here, read this! Watch their face as they read it. WHen they are done, say, I am raising money for that same charity. I would like to keep peopel from suffering like that. Woudl you mind pitching in $5?

See if you can get a whole bunch of strippers to donate thier used costumes, shoes, etc. and then have a sale with it. Sell things ridiculously cheap, maybe !$10 for costumes and $20 for shoes. Try to get some ohter girls to help you pricce thigs, buyt keep it simple. the idea is to sell AS MUCH as you can, not to recover what any one particular outfit is "worth" get it? You want to sell them cheap so t6hey will selll. Dnacers can't resist cheap costmes. I have boutght some truely horrible things b/c they were cheap!

See if you can get your home club to help you do a benefit night.

If you mail your letters, don't forget to include a SASE with each one. Make it as easy as possible to donate. (Stamps are tax deductable!)

Don't forget the mainstream business you see every day. If they already know you, they will be ore likely to donate!

I gave some corporate sponsorship forms to a friend who works at a branch of Jamba Juice I got into a few times a week. She's the branch manager and she was attending a staff meeting yesterday. She offered to show the forms to one of her bosses to try to get Jamba Juice to sponsor our team and she told me later that the response was positive.

So, we may have a corporate sponsor this year.

I also approached the management of my bank to see if they might be interested, but have gotten no response yet. However, I think there is a possibility with them.

Off to a slow start, but I'm hopeful.

More good news, at least some hopeful signs:

I sent an email to my bank and they responded within a day saying that, while their charitable contributions for 2005 have already been allocated, they will review my application and see what they can do for the team.

Some of the girls at my club have said they will contribute. None have done so yet, but there is still plenty of time. Plus, some girls who used to work at Centerfolds, but thave since moved to other clubs have said they will help out. I just need to get them some forms.

A few leads have turned-up. A few of our customers have expressed interest in contributing, either with corporate donations or individually.

I did get a word of caution from one person though. He told me that mainstream donors may back-off if strip clubs or other Adult businesses are seen as donors. His point being that they may not wish to have their business names associated with strip clubs, Adult video companies, etc. He had no compunctions over this issue, but he said other business might and he advised me to try harder for mainstream businesses and avoid the strip clubs' donations, if possible.

I'll see how it goes this week. If the two or three clubs that I planned to send forms to dont make donations, I'll forget about that angle of fundraisiing.

I have to think about what is best for the team and the LLS, before I think about anything else. Though I'm still hopeful that the clubs and strip club people that I know will still help.

I picked-up my official LLS wristbands today. I got 100 of them to sell for $2 each.

My boss at the club has told me that I could sell them at work, so it looks like my fundraising is off to a good start this weekend.

The wristbands are purple with the words "TRAIN, ACHIEVE, ENDURE, MATTER" on them, using TEAM (as is: Team in Training) as the acronym to build from.

There was a bachelor party last night at the club and I DJed for it. The guys were from the Coast Guard Cutter "Jarvis" and one of them was getting married the following morning. They tipped well, were well-behaved and had themselves a pretty good time.

With my LLS fundraising going-on, I decided to donate my tips from that night to the LLS. Near the end of the party, I handed-out the TNT wristbands to the guys (there were nine of them) and let them know that the money they had tipped me would be going to the LLS. I told the guy who was in charge of the party that the reason I didnt let them know what I was going to do earlier in the night was because I didnt want it to seem like some kind of scheme I was playing in order to get more tips out of them. I'd tell them at the end of the party and give them all wristbands as a "thank you from the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society".

Turns out that one of the men at the party is married to a woman who works at the Cancer Research Center here in Hawaii. I've made several deliveries to their office, carrying test samples between their two offices - one is downtown and the other is at the University of Hawaii at Manoa - and I knew some of the people who worked at both offices.

They put a few more dollars in the tip jar, as did one of the dancers, while they were packing-up to go home at the end of the party. I asked the Best Man to fill-out the Donor Form, so that the local LLS office could send them a receipt and I counted-out the money.

Total raised for the LLS that night: $93.

The first event for the Hawaii LLS cycling team is tomorrow morning - Sunday 24 April 2005 at 7:30am - in Haleiwa.

The Haleiwa Metric Century will be 100 kilometers long (62 miles) along the North Shore of Oahu.

This event attracts a lot of the bicycle racing crowd, so although it is not officially a race, it usually turns into one anyway.

I'll be there, riding a fixed geared bike. A fixed gear is best due to the flat terrain and it will give me a good workout.

Our team coach had a bad accident last week, so he will be unable to attend the event himself. There are only two of us on the team, but the team is a new one and will most likely grow with time and recruitment.

I'll let you know how it goes.

My total distance covered: 100 kilometers (about 62 miles)
Total time: 3 hours, 40 minutes

Pretty good weather, with just a little rain. The road was mostly flat, with some climbing which was not too hard.

There were more than 600 riders particiapting, including our team.

I did find-out that the TNT-Hawaii cycling team originally had six people signed-up, but four of them dropped-out shortly after the team formed. So, that leaves just two of us. my teammate, likewise had a hard time fundraising and I am concerned that she may drop-out as well, but its hard to say at this point.

Our coaches took some pictures of us at the event and I'll be posting them as they become available.
