Default My first night back after a stupid excuse at the day job!

Welp, I went back and will be back until I find another job. Long story short, I had landed a great job as a first year paralegal in an office of 7 people. Everyone interviewed me before they hired me. I get married, I show up to work on the 2nd and the office manager who is training me, tells me during the course of the week of training that I am not allowed to ask any questions. (???) So, I just do my work, come in take my lunch and go home.... I'm pretty quiet by nature within a professional environment, and personally, I don't really share a whole lot about myself as I have always believed that when you work sometimes it is better to just keep to yourself. I had worked at a large corporate firm prior and saw the rumor mill that would happen to people when they'd get too personal at work.

Anyways, so I'm in this job a week, my work is great, the attorneys tell me that they think I"m doing excellent and the office manager pulls me aside and says, "You are so abrasive, so defensive when I speak to you" ( this came from me asking her a question and her throwing up her hand in my face and saying, "DON'T" and then walking off) So, me being the scorpio I am I called her on the carpet for it and said, "how do you expect me to learn if you don't allow me to ask questions?" So we had it out- that was Friday the 11th of March. We agreed after the meeting that we were starting over and that she would work on her communication style.

So on Thursday I get called in and she closes the door and says, "(Insert real name here), this just isn't going to work. I don't like you, you are too black adn white and here's your check, I'm so sorry"... I was like WTF? So I ask her some questions and she basically says, " You know, its just not a fit for me, and I have been here 16 years and I just am not going to like you."

So I'm back at the club until I find something else... ARRRRG.. I've never had this happen to me before..

Two words, POWER TRIP............ Some people go nuts when they have power, I'm sure you've seen it with new managers.
Don't let it get you down, but she better not give you a bad recommendation!

Seriously, that is completely messed up. Just because this person has a personal beef with you does not give her the authority to fire you, last I checked.

When I first started at my current job, I had worked for primarily smaller firms (one was a startup, the other was a landscape contractor) and wasn't used to the corporate hierarchical structure, nor the button-down nature. I had quite a few personality conflicts with people, and was actually sent to a stress management & communication skills training course because the last thing my company needed was a buyer pissing off their vendors.

So now, eight years later, I've gotten two promotions (one of which took me here to England) and everyone that I had those original growing pains with now work seamlessly with me. If your customers (ie. the lawyers) were pleased with your work I don't think the office manager had any just cause for firing you. But hey, if it was going to make your own personal situation worse, better you got out now than later I suppose.

Yeah, maybe the manager's been there 16 years, but with an attitude like hers (and the likely drop in production without you there), she may not be long for that job.

Sorry to hear that Gynger, but that firm didn't deserve you anyway. How the hell are you supposed to learn anything if you can't ask questions? That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard of. The office manager sounds like a total bitch too. Good luck to you and I'm sure you'll find another job soon.

Is she the one that hired you? Are there higher ups? O know that you no longer want to work there, but you could still report the chick. They don't want people like that working there, how is anything supposed to get done if she fires someone after just a few days because SHE doesn't like them?

She was my supervisor. She supervises the office.. so she had the ultimate say. She said that I needed to "hob nob" with everyone more and share more of myself with everyone who worked there. I am just not that way. The conversation was more than what I said in my first post, when we "had it out" she said, ' you are very passive, and you are snotty..etc" and then when she got pissed because of something I did (which was something she told me to do) and I explained to her that she told me to do that, she denied it flat out and said she never said anything of the sort...so it just got even worse from there...

I did talk to the owner but he said that if she was unwilling to get along with me, then there really was nothing he could do either...

I'm very stressed out. I'm pretty much out of money and this job came at a good time because I had gotten downsized from my last one on Feb. 1st- I don't mean to whine.. but I literally am so done with the dancing thing.. but when you need money, what else is there? My managers are thrilled to have me back, but my heart is not in it.. and I just feel embarrassed to be "crawling" back.. no offense and please don't take any, but I've just reached that stage of 'I'm done and I'm done and I'm not doing this anymore" I'm just so damn frustrated..

Well, dont' stress, something always comes along. And you are NOT crawling back! It wasn't like you had to beg for a job dancing, so it isn't really crawling back. Some chick screwed you over so you have to dance for allittle while. Just see if there is something else out there becuase you never know what might turn up.

I am so sorry this happened to you Gynger ! I know you don't REALLY want to go back to dancing but, as you know things don't always go as we plan them. Just try to make as much money as you can at the club and keep going on interviews until you find a postion that suits you. Good luck sweets..
