This guy is no saint, but I don't understand why he is the only one facing the death penalty! And then there is the racial component. But if the politicians had actually bothered enforcing the laws against illegal imimigration which already exist, then this guy would not have had an opportunity to do this in the first p lace! So, shouldn't these politicians also be tried as accessories to this crime? OK, so I'm dreaming.

I felt sick when I heard of this case. As for the lone death penalty canidate, it's on the grounds of how he could have understood the immigrants were in danger, but did nothing to help. I won't say more than that.
Illegal immigration laws won't be enforced because the people who pay illegal immigrants off the books are powerful enough to keep that from happening. I know of wealthy agribusiness types who went on border runs to get seasonal labor. That was back in the day. Now they just wait for laborers to come to them. Using illegal labor cuts their overhead.

This guy deserves the punishment as does anyone else directly involved.

Agribusiness (and other industries dependent on "cheaper than American" labor) have blood on their hands too...no doubt

So does every American that purchases products made by these companies and doesn't write the companies demanding a change in policy.

Sadly, many industries and consumers think our standard of living and even our economic success (yes! a shrinking dollar and increasing deficits!) depend on underpriced labor...labor provided by illegal immigrants and "slave traders" like this slime who's on trial now. Until we decide as a nation these activities (hiring illegals, paying less than living wage, risking safety of workers) is more horrible than paying the true cost of products and services, this will continue.

I was watching a program last night on illegal immigration and I was quite suprised by the numbers and what we are doing about it ( pretty much nothing ) and these illegals can get bank accounts or whatever same as you and me I wonder when this will end , it just doesnt seem right that they can benefit from our system with healthcare as well .

My line of thought... if someone is an illegal alien and able to recieve SSI, healthcare, etc... it's not the fault of the illegal alien but the system that allows the holes in which these services can be rendered.

I may have many faults, but being wrong ain't one of them.

He was directly responsible for the lives of these people, he heard them screaming and didn't care. The immigrants came here for a better opportunity. Just because they were illegals does not mean they should not get any justice. Most of the time illegals don't get justice as it is. They are more integral to the thriving US than they are a burden of the system.

Too many people see human trafficking as a money making business. The illegals are stuffed into trucks and cars and driven on the highways under very dangerous condition. If some asshole thinks that his paycheck outweighs the safety of other humans and the consequences of the law, then let him serve his time. I hear way too many stories on the news about vans crashing on the interstate, killing 20 people at a time.

This is exactly what we should be doing. Instead of focusing on the illegals themselves we should really crack down on companies that routinely hire illegals and the coyotes.

Agreed SD. But we as Americans need to stop demanding "lowest price at any cost" which motivates these companies and coyotes and their international equivalents who make people work underpaid and unsafe to serve our consumerism

I don't think that is possible. Everyone wants to maximize their profits and minimize their debts. Companies don't willingly give out higher salaries just to make themselves feel better. They do it because by paying someone a certain amount of money, they will profit somehow.
As long as there are illegals coming in to the states, there WILL be someone willing to employ them.
I believe, like Sergent D, that the focus should be on the people responsible for bringing illegals in. That and kicking Mexico's ass for publishing a comic book on how to cross the border.

    That pisses me off.

I see one thing missing in your list of things to focus on: the consumers that want "lowest possible price" regardless of how that happens. By supporting big-agriculture, sweatshops around the world, etc...we provide the driving force for this kind of activity.

Solution is simple, buy locally grown foods, work ONLY with companies that have good labor and environmental practices and history. So many resources on the web for this kind of info...start with Co-Op America and FairTrade.

I buy locally grown foods, to the extent that I can. But living in AZ, they are probably all picked by migrants...

I honestly wish it was this easy. But you can't expect everyone, or even enough people to boycott companies with bad labor histories. Like WalMart. Everyone who watches the news must be aware that WalMart has HORRIBLE labor practices, but what kind of dent does that make?

(BTW, I'm not trying to be pessimistic, just playing the devil's advocate, really. )

I know Wal-Mart gets a lot of bashing, but thats primarily because they're the biggest gorilla. Pretty much all of Wal-Mart's competitors are every bit as socially irresponsible as they are.

The only way you can really ensure something is "locally grown" is to go to a certified farmer's market or grow it yourself. Unfortunately, even if you have the time to do those things, they aren't exactly options during the winter and early spring months when there's nothing for you or the farmer to harvest. You're then resigned to heading to the grocery store. Same goes for when what you want is out of season or can't be grown in your area due to the climate.

Actually, there are "fair trade' websites like co-op america which offer products year round.

many are mail ordeer, meaning no extra time is needed....

If people want to shop "normally" that's fine - but let the management know you care about socially responsible and healthy food issues -and are willing to support their efforts in that direction by buying the products they bring in. I buy most of my food and supplies at regular stores...just looking for good labels, brands and packaging.

Yes, I make product decisions based on the recyclability of packaging.
