    Default Ulnar nerve--pole arm trouble?

For a while I've been having a tingling right hand and some pain in my right arm. My doctor couldn't find a specific injury and recommended I get some physical/occupational therapy for it, diagnosing me with ulnar paresthesias (the ulnar nerve is the funnybone nerve). He asked me what I could have done to pinch/trap the nerve, and I was at a loss--I type and knit, but not enough to cause an injury. Then last night I thought, "Hey, my right arm is my pole arm." Hmmm.

Has anyone else here ever had a repetitive strain injury or pinched nerve caused by use of the pole arm? Admittedly, I don't do a lot of pole tricks or anything, but I always use my right arm to swing around the pole or hold on to it. Just curious as to whether this could be the cause.

It probably is the pole work, my work injuries concerned my back nerves and vertabrae, and the answer was to alter my pole dancing, but not quit alltogether.
I stopped playing guitar when I got "stingers"- tendons snapping. Some people get problems like these from boring jobs, like typing/ deskwork. At least artistic injuries seem to have esoteric merit.

I have to agree with this Susan. My left hand and lower arm gets the tingles all the time and sometimes my fingers go numb and get really cold. No pain, but lot's of tinglies. I know I did this during a pole trick because I felt it shortly after the trick and it has not been the same since.

No, they didn't do that--what, electric test, right? EMG? I haven't experienced a lot of numbness, more soreness. I might ask for that if it doesn't improve. I will totally hound my doctors whenever I have an issue.

BTW, Vade, I would get it checked out, because if you don't deal with stuff like this, you could wind up with permanent damage. That's why I want to deal with it now, so I don't wind up not being able to type, which would seriously interfere with my future livelihood.

MM, that sucks about not being able to play guitar; is there anything you can do about it?

I am trying to play again. There are finger exercise devices for guitarists, and "stress ball" type items to strengthen tendons and muscles...
As for the pole work, yeah, if you can feel the pain while doing the dancing, that's a dead giveaway.

I have had these pains in my left arm in the joint, and I'm left handed and use that arm as my strong one for the pole. No wonder. I heard that if you start taking glucosamine it will strengthen your tendons after a long time.

I think carpal tunnel you get tingling and numbness into your fingers and pains. I was worried I had it once and went through a bunch of testing and discovered I was simply using my hands a lot and that they weren't strong enough for it yet and that was why they were hurting.

What I'm experiencing isn't carpal tunnel--different symptoms. I don't think I've been using my hands a lot more recently, either.

Yes the EMG. Usually a doc will do it or refer for it after xrays, oral anti inflamatories, etc... But bugging the shit out of them works too. I think after physical therapy or during most docs might go for botox/cortisone trigger point injections, which hurt but help out a lot.

I may have many faults, but being wrong ain't one of them.

There's radial tunnel, carpal tunnel...your ulnar nerve...it can all jack up your arm. I know a tattoo artist who had surgery because of radial tunnel. Sometimes physical therapy can help.

Its like tennis elbow, I call mine stripper elbow. At least I don't work in many clubs with
poles anymore so the nerve seems to have healed......deep tissue massage and Aspercreme helped me........

I don't strip or use a pole but I have extensive damage to my right ulnar nerve caused by a work injury. And the symptoms are similar to what you describe. They can test the nerve for damage by shocking it with a set of probes that are inserted into the nerve. Just a caution though, this test is very aggrivating and though it will generate results it will be extremely unpleasant.

I thought I broke my arm at work one night.
    I rushed to the ER
turns out I slightly lifted the muscle off of the bone.

DR said if I continued to do pole tricks (particularily my favorite "THE FLYING V") I eventually would remove it and it wouldn't reattach itself

last time i did any fancy polework.
    now I just spin.

Yes, I went to my Chiropractor the other day with a headache. He did some muscle testing and ended up adjusting bones in my hands / thumbs and elbows and also around my collar bone. He said what-ever physical activity I've been doing since I last saw him had thrown them out and the nerves were irratated so that's what was causing the headaches. Usually it's my bodgey neck that's the problem. Since my previous visit to see him I've made a huge effort to learn pole tricks! (Hence my new pic :-) When I told him he said that after work each night I should be massaging my arms, elbows and hands which will help reduce the damage.
