    Hey scarlett_vancouver,

I remember reading in one of your post ages ago that you don't eat grains or sugar. I have come across some stuff on this recently and would be interested to hear your take on it.

Why you do it? What promted you to start? What have you noticed on the diet? What authors, ideas, and literature do you follow?

Looking forward to hearing what you have to say

    k

My interest in avoiding grains comesdown to avoiding lectins. Lectins are agglutinizing agents that bind to proteins, make blood sticky, and can cause inflammation. It's a topic explored a little bit in the 'blood type diet', but not covered very well imo.
Lectins are in a tons of foods, and not all of them are bad. They haven't been very well studied, but the studies that are out there point to lectins beig responsible for every thing from arthritis to food allergies.
Some more common lectins are the peanut lectin (allergy connection), the nightshade lectins (arthritis connection - google nightshade vegetables + arthritis+ lectins), the wheat lectin (glucosamine, used by some to reduce joint inflammation, actually just neutralizes the effect of the wheat lectin), and ricin (a bio-weapon, the powdered lectin of the castor bean).

There isn't much information out there, I research it when I have time, but it's pretty grim.

I'll post some links to check out .

As for sugar, I just avoid it because I don't think the body can handle that much! That said, I'm not as fervent on the topic as I used to be, and I eat fruit all the time. I try to avoid refined sugar because it saps my energy, but find that taking chromium with it helps.

    hope that helps!

Ps sorry I took so long to respond- I have a brutal virus on my computer that I can't get rid of, and it makes everything SO SLOW, so I've been avoiding sites with lots of click-throughs.

    Thanks for the post Scarlett...

There is some great info on it over at www.mercola.com and actually Barry Sears (The Zone) covers it in his books. At this stage I am mainly interested in it for my skin.... sounds like tehre is alot of other benefits to it also.

The Paleo Diet is also another interesting concept, I am waiting to get a copy of the book. The site is pretty comprehensive http://www.thepaleodiet.com/
as well as this site http://www.paleodiet.com/

The Paleo diet? I haven't got my copy yet but I am looking forward to reading it. I have been putting some of the principles into practice and feel good for it (still can't give up my oats in the morning or post workout natural whey shake though..... )

Let me know how you go Naomi .... Oh and welcome to the board BTW

thank you yes it was the paleo diet. i have amazon one click purchase, which is lethal to my bank balance. im a quick reader, and a bookcrossing.com addict. i will stick it on there when im done for anybody who cares to read it after and doesnt want to purchase their own copy. see how it will hold up in my vegan household though.

I love bookcrossing! lol, I love the surprised messages from the people who pick up the books I leave out. It's a great idea.

I've looked into the paleo diet a bit- it's basically a forcus on pre-agriculture eating habits, raw food et al, right? That's what makes sense to me- evolution isn't THAT fast!

I've read one of the zone books- the omega zone- and loved it, especially the intro chapter on how evolution was given a huge boost by movement towards the rift valley- that's so interesting! I'm EFA crazy, too, so it makes me feel like I'm doing something right . I should read the others, maybe- I'm just useless at following set diets (30-30-40 my ass!).

The grain topic is probably covered a lot more directly by the paleo diet- I just go off on lectins because I find them interesting- they've been studied so much except when it comes to individual food lectins and their effects on the body. I feel like discovering the individual effects of specific food lectins on humans, different blood types etc. will be one of the bigger advances in natural medicine in the next few decades. Exciting!

Meat . . . trans fats . . . non-organic dairy . . . . so many things out thatre that are presumably edible, but I am trying to get my family to avoid!

Peanut butter sandwiches are a staple of my husband's and son's diets!

Are there any vegetarians out there who are doing this diet? What are you eating instead of wheat?

Apparently not so good for a veggie Collen.... I saw an article somewhere on it. I can try and find it again of you want? I guess without meat it turns into a Raw veggie diet, completely different concept.

You can cook on Paleo just not over do it...

www.mercola.com is a site you might be interested in Scarlett.

Hey what do you do for breakfast!? I need to find a more appealing alternative if I am gonna give up my oats!!

on the topic of diets of this type... has anyone done any research on the specific carbohydrate diet? It is supposed to be fantastic for suffers of autoimmune diseases (arthritis, celiacs, IBD...) i have ulcerative colitis and the concept behind this diet is to avoid sugars and grains, all together. The theory is that, for people such as myself with IBD (and IBS), the gluten and sugars from wheats and sucrose, fructose and glucose, sit in the gut and feed bad bacteria - because our bodies are less capable of breaking them down - hence, causing flare-ups of the disease.

Not to give too much info, but I've been on a clear liquid diet for the past week due to the colitis acting up, but once I can eat again, I think ill give the SC diet a try. Cant hurt!

Just wondering if anyone has any experience with it.
