Default Question for Long Time Tanners

I plan to start tanning weekly....tanning my body but covering my face with a towel most of the time to prevent premature wrinkles. Right now I'm white as a ghost...shit I'm Elvira white! It's just not working anymore for me. So to all you long time tanners, have you had any noticeable damage to your skin from doing this? Does doing this really give your body wrinkles? Also, if I used one of those tanners you put on before going out in the sun with an spf of 10 would that do much for reducing skin damage while still giving me a nice tan? I want a nice tan but I want nice skin too

There is soooo much on the internet (just did a search) that proves how bad UV exposure is for your skin.

Dermatologists know it causes premature again, and skin cancer. Even if you don't care about cancer and tanning is an exercise in vanity, why would you want wrinkled, papery, saggy skin? Why are you just covering your face? Overtanned hands are horrible too....and icky chest spots.

And since you are very pale, it's even worse!

i will post this for the third time...
    okay I'm re posting this...
Okay this is my exclusive how get tan via tanning beds. It will take 2-4 months so if your salon has a unlimited package get this package. This is for those who have not either tanned before or have not tanned in months or years.
    Month 1:
-First use only high pressure beds .
-if the salon has a stand up high pressure and a lay down alternate between them.
-Use a very good base tan acclerator lotion like Cal tan's X speed,Swedish Beauty's Swedish Hemp Crème, Australian Gold's Dark Tanning Accelerator, Emerald Bay's Dark 'n' Dazed, CalTan's Climax, Designer Skin's Drama Queen, and Synergy's Brown Envy, Supre Smoke. Do not use a lotion with bronzer, tingle, or shimmer in it for this month.
-For week 1 and 2, tan 2 times a week (with a day in between ie. monday and wednesday).
-For week 3 and 4 tan 3 times a week (i.e. Monday, Wednesday, Friday).
-You should start off at the minimum exposure time the bed manufacturer allows for your skin type.Find out your skin type http://www.naatso.org/frameset_survey.htm Only increase your time, by 1-2 minutes, after going a couple sessions at your current time. If at any time you burn, wait until all the pink is gone, and cut back on your time at your next session.
-exfoliate (st ives apricot scrub) once a week on a day you do not tan.
-Moisturizer (Cat's Pajamas by Swanky Girl or a good facial moisturizer like cetaphil) everyday twice a day. do not moisturize at least 2 hours before tanning since the moisturizer might have an affect on the tanning lotion. Do not use a moisturizer or body soap/wash with mineral oil or alcohol in it. Check your moisturizer to make sure there are no skin lightening ingredients in it such as Diacetyl Benzoyl Lathyrol, Hydroquinone (most common), Triticum Vulgare (wheat) Germ Extract. It is just easier to use a moisturizer from a tanning lotion company.
-Use a body wash instead of soap. soap tends to strip moisture away. Make sure wash does not contain mineral oil or alcohol.
-Tanning after working out is the best option since your blood is pumping closer to the epidermis which supposedly makes for a better tan.
-Make sure you are hydrating yourself at least 60oz of water a day or more.

    MONTH 2:
-step 2 lotion with out tingle, shimmer, or bronzer like Cal tan's X power.
-use the high pressure beds for the next month the first week is every other day (monday, wednesday, friday, sunday) then the next week (tuesday, thursday, saturday).
-gradually move up to the maxium time allowed in the tanning bed. after this month you should be very tan and hit your first tanning plateau
-exfoliate once a week on a day you do not tan.
    -Moisturizer after tanning.
-Body wash without mineral oil or alcohol.
-keep drinking at least 60oz of water daily.
***Even though you will be dark you will still burn if you layout outside.

    MONTH 3 and so on:
    - To just maintain tan use high pressure 2-3 times a week. Using a step 2 lotion.
To get tanner: tan 3-4 times a week. alternate between base beds and high pressure bed. Note, you might get a little red or pink in the base beds since the UVA and UVB is different than high pressure beds so watch your time in the base beds.
-start using a mild tingle lotion. Then move to moderate tingle with time. Then to a strong tingle. A cooling lotion can be used anytime.
-Rotate lotions to break further plateaus. One day tingle. Second day acclerator.
    - If needed use a L-Tyrosine supplement like tanaid.
-Bronzers once a week help to break plateaus.
    - At this time to break the tannning bed plateau outside tanning is suggested if possible. Watch your time because even though you are dark tanning via tanning bed vs. outside is very different.
-daily water intake 60oz or more.

I may have many faults, but being wrong ain't one of them.

I gave up bed tanning a long time ago. My skin started feeling dry all the time...no matter how much water I drank or how much lotion I put on.

I had a friend who was "going places" as a model. She was addicted to the tanning beds...for YEARS. I saw her again years ago and she couldn't be a model anymore because her skin looked like leather. I mean, when she dies, her family could literally make a handbag out of her.

Being that you are ghost white, you probably will not tan very well (if at all). Your best bet is to forgo the tanning salons and go try the different self tanners out there. Find the one that looks best on you.

Your skin is the only one you get. Take care of it.

    ^ What VG said.

My ex from a few years back tanned near-constantly, and it shows. She eventually switched to self-tanners, but the damage to her pale, white skin had already been done.

For what it's worth, some of us actually prefer dancers that are as pasty white as we are.

Idealism is fine, but as it approaches reality, the costs become prohibitive.

women with natural pigment to their skin do seem to do better with the sun, but this girl is pale

side note...I work with a very pale Irish girl who started tanning a couple of weeks ago. Of course the first week she was red from the burns. Then she had to take two weeks off because her skin got this disgusting rash all over. It looks like she's got eczema all over her body. She was doing 5 min sessions too! No matter how much you are pigmented, this is the same poison going into everyone's body that steps into that machine.

to each their own. ecezma has nothing to do with tanning per se only the individual that is tanning.

I didn't say it was ecezma. I said she had a disgusting rash....and it looked like it. It's not that though....just don't know how to explain it.... it's this red, flaky, bubbly rash.

And yeah, to each their own. But if one is wondering if tanning will hurt your skin, it's obvious it does....which is the original point of this thread.

    Muyaha,
What brand of bronze/tingle do you recommend?

I don't go to the beds often, but I've been doing it for a while, cover my face after 5 minutes. I am out of lotion. Was using something called CTX or CFX that had caffeine and guarana in it, no tingle......

That sounds like 2nd degree burns. Pale skinned people react to sunlight much more harshly (no pigment, like you said)...they have a higher chance of getting severely burned. And, those symptoms you described sounds like burns (had a friend that got that...not fun).

Some people were just not meant to tan at all.

BTW...have you ever seen pictures of those Native Americans? Or even seen pics of field workers in Peru? Their skin looks like leather. That's because they work in the sun. If you keep tanning like that, when you're older...no matter how "smartly" or "safely" you think you tan, your skin will look like that, as well.

When Indians wanted to tan hide for use as leather, they would smear the hide with brains and leave it in the sun. Leather does not come off the body looking like it does. It's sun/UV bed baked for that look.

You want to look like that when you're 50, then keep tanning religiously. Like I said before...I had a friend who was a sun/bed whorshipper...she now looks like a walking handbag...and she's only 31. Irreversible. She'll look like that for the rest of her life.

    To each their own.

This is kind of a taboo subject like,"To get a boob job,or not get a boob job".

When I tan,I use lotion with the best ingredients like Co-Q10 in it.That makes a HUGE difference.

Leathery skin? My mom is 55 and has extremely soft, smooth, supple and wrinkle-free skin. And this is after YEARS of baking with baby oil under the blazing Phillipine sun. You can't compare field workers in Peru to our situation.

Now, I understand that my skin type, otb's skin type and others are vastly different than the original poster and will react differently to sun exposure. I also understand that exposure to UV light does speed up the aging process and increases the risk of skin cancer.

Okay okay... wow. I know my skin is different too but well...

I'm Scadinavian, French and Native American (Osage and Cherokee) and I can go from stark white to very tan. My grandma has tanned since the 1950s and still has no wrinkles. My best friend is descended from Danish and Swedish royalty so she is pretty dern white. But my gawd she can get dark; darker than me... and never burn. Genetics, man Some really pale people can tan. Now that isn't saying it is necessarily good that they do.

Everyone is different and I agree to err on the side of caution, but no need to get all angry about it!

I am Native American, Irish, Dutch, and I can go from being stark white to a great brown color. I tan very easily, but its hard for me to burn. I love laying out in the sun during the summer, and if I had the money to tan, I would go tan. I love having some color to me. I dont have wrinkles yet, but I probably will one day since I love the sun and warmth so much. Of course tanning isnt healthy for your skin, but some people dont care. They love the way it feels and the way it looks. Its a personal decision. Mine is to tan

Field workers in Peru who spend lots of time in the sun...have, yes, a leathery looking quality to their skin. Why? Because they spend countless hours being out in the open.

I didn't find it to be offensive as I was not being derogative about anybody. I simply pointed out the long-term effects of too much sun exposure. What's so offensive about that and how would you prefer me to say it?

As for your mom...you have to remember that the sun exposure these days (with the depletion of the ozone layer) is much more intense than it was 10, 20, or 30 years ago (probably when your mom did most of her laying out). The times are different...thus calling for a different measure of dealing with the desire to tan.

Depends on if you are senstive to tingles? I would start with the mild tingles then move up to the strong tingles. I love tingles the stronger the better. I just got finished using Ultimate's Theory. it's a tingle a bronzer and a self tanner. Cal tan Pyro is a strong tingle. Swedish Beauty Bonfire is a strong tingle also.

I tried tingles, but I absolutely could not deal with them. There was a gal that said the cooling ones worked as well as the tingles, but they just got cooler instead of tingly. I loved these. Maybe if you cant handle the tingle, you could try one of them. I dont know which brands have them though, youd have to check at the tanning place.
